A. There are many different functions of regulatory agencies and the nursing practice is regulated by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN). BRN is a state government agency that was established to regulate the practice of registered nurses. The BRN is responsible for implementation and enforcement of the Nursing Practice Act: the laws related to nursing education, licensure (NCLEX), practice, and discipline. BRN is responsible for issuing and renewing the licenses of nurse practitioners, register nurses, and licensed vocational nurses, along with setting standards for nursing programs and approving nursing program. (Board of Registered Nursing - What is the Board of Registered Nursing?, 2015) BRN related to our nursing practice for example “No person shall engage in the practice of nursing, as defined in Section 2725, without holding a license which is in an active status issued under this chapter except as otherwise provided in this act.” (Board of Registered Nursing - Business and Professions Code, 2015)
On the other hand, a professional nursing organization like American Nurses Association (ANA) is the only nationwide nursing organization which represents the entire registered nurse population. ANA advances the nursing profession by fostering high standards of nursing practices, promoting the economic and general welfare of nurses in the workplace, projecting a positive and realistic view of nursing, and by lobbying the Congress and regulatory agencies on health care issues affecting nurses and the general public. (ANA Statement of Purpose, 2015) ”Optimal staffing is essential in order to provide optimal patient care.” (Nurse Staffing, 2015) ANA set standards for nursing practice and lobby the Congress to establish the law for optimal nurse to patient ratio, so nurses can reduce medication errors and reduce nurse fatigues or burnouts. ...Professional Mission Statement Western Governor’s University Lindsey Isdahl Mission Statement Here at the facility we promote quality safe care of all our patients through our well trained staff to treat each individual physically, mentally, and spiritually. Part A A board of nursing (BON) is the enforcement of licensure, education standards, and laws and regulations to ensure patient care and safety and usually occur at the state level. Professional nursing associations (PNA) can be at a state or national level and is an organization to bring nurses together to promote quality care and measures through observation, experience, education and research. Both the BON and PNA affect my career as a nurse. Every two years I am required to pay the BON for my re-licensure through the state I am certified to work in. At this time I am also subject to an audit that shows I have been following and meeting the basic requirements for continued licensure. This is done through working a minimal set of hours each year in the field and obtaining continuing education credits. One PNA I am a part of is the Minnesota Nurses Association. MNA is a union that is a support tool for its members, creates equal rights for employees, and provides research for improved quality of care and work environment. This organization has provided me with a friendly, work safe environment with good benefits so that I am able to provide the best quality of care to my patients on a daily basis. Part...

Wgu Professional Roles Paper

...Professional Roles & Values Project Heather Cantrell Western Governors University Nursing has evolved over the years to entail more than just caring for another person. The nursing profession encompasses regulatory agencies, professional organizations, theories, values, traits and a code. The following outlines some of what it means to be a nurse. A. Functional Differences The Board of Registered Nurses is an entity set up to protect the public from nurses and to regulate the practice of registered nurses. It protects the public by: setting educational standards for RN’s, approving nursing programs, evaluating license applications, issuing and renewing licenses, issuing certificates, taking disciplinary action when needed and managing intervention programs. The BRN assists me by keeping me accountable to the pledge I made as an RN to adhere to my scope of practice and maintaining my continuing education units (BRN, 2016). Professional Nursing Organizations, like the American Nursing Association, act as a voice of a nurse to the public and government. The ANA promotes the rights of nurse’s in the workplace, projects a positive view of nursing and lobbies the congress and other health care industries on behalf of nurses. My membership with the ANA personally is a resource to me for workplace issues that come up and ethical concerns I may have. The ANA offers continuing education units in the form of conferences, seminars and articles. I benefit from the ANA by......

...Professional Roles and Values Project A. Regulatory agencies are government related agencies that are responsible for exercising authority in a supervisory capacity. One example of a regulatory agency is the State Board of Nursing, which is a government regulated agency. The State Board is responsible for the public health and welfare, by assuring that licensed nurses provide safe and competent care. Regulatory agencies, such as the Board of Nursing, regulate my practice by enforcing that Nurse Practice Acts are followed and they also outline standards for safe nursing practice. Another way the Board of Nursing helps regulate my practice is by enforcing continuation of education every year. (Regulatory Agency, 2015) Professional nursing organizations are usually voluntary and not government related. Some examples of the organizations include the American Nurses Association, which helps advance and protect the nursing profession, and the Emergency Nurses Association that helps define the future of emergency nursing. These type of organizations support my practice by allowing me to stay current in my profession and also allows me to network amongst my peers. (Role of Professional, 2015) B. The ANA Code of Ethics are a set of provisions, fundamental values, as well as many commitments of a nurse. Provision 1 states “The nurse, in all professional relationships, practices with compassion and respect for the inherent dignity, worth, and uniqueness of every......

...Advance Professional Roles and Values Project Falls Keri Cochran October 20, 2014 Western Governor’s University The problem and explanation: The hospital I am employed at is currently having an issues with patient falls. The hospital is a “no restraint facility” and strongly discourages the use of any form of restraint including leather, soft, posey vests, or chemical. Currently the line of defense is using staff sitters, moving the patient to a visible room when available and or family members are encouraged to come and stay with their loved ones who are at high risk of falls. This does not always rectify the issues secondary to staffing issues and family participation. The facility has had two critical falls this year, one ending in a patient breaking a hip and the other a death secondary to hemorrhagic bleed to the brain. The facility has had numerous other falls which lead to added procedures, exposure to radiation (radiological exams) and increased lengths of stay, multiple bruises, fractures, pulled out IV which need to be preplaced, and numerous bleeds and skin tears. The unit I work on is a Medical Surgical Telemetry (4 Tower) unit which consists mainly of pre and post open heart patient and pre and post angiogram patients who may or may not have had interventions which include stents, plasty, TCPA, Pacemaker / AICD placement, and EP studies with ablations. The patient population is mainly sixty years of age and above, with a high incidence of......

...schooling and passed the examination, and making sure that applicants are eligible by requiring a background check (BRN, 2015). The California BRN is in charge of making sure that all registered nurses are up to par with their requirements. One way that this is done is that when the time comes to renew your license, you must provide evidence of continuing education. The education must come from a board approved education program and one must have the equivalent of 30 hours of continuing education (BRN, 2015). The California Board of Nursing licensing process is not voluntary. If you are going to be a licensed professional nurse in this state, one must go through the processes that are set forth by the BRN. Professional nursing organizations on the other hand are voluntary. A registered nurse may choose to belong to one, many or none of these. The numbers of professional nursing organizations are as vast as the specialties that nursing offers. The organization that I will discuss is the Emergency Nurses Association, also known as ENA. “Originally aimed at teaching and networking, the organization has evolved into an authority, advocate, lobbyist, and voice for emergency nursing.” (ENA, 2015). The ENA offers certification in specialties related to the emergency nurse. Some of the designations that you can obtain are CEN or Certified Emergency Nurse and CPEN or Certified Pediatric Emergency Nurse. These additional initials show your peers that you have gone above and beyond......

Why Online School

...Why I chose WGU for my degree? WGU employs a competency-based model where a student may earn college credits based on their knowledge, work experience and skills. In order to speed up your preparation for each course, you would typically take a pre-assessment test of a specified domain of competency, based on the result of which your mentor would work with you to create a study strategy to prepare you for your final test. This way you would save precious time by not having to study through the entire course but just focus on areas of weakness. For subjects like Project Management and Quantitative analysis, which I felt I was well versed with, given my current job experience and math skills, I decided to directly take the pre-assessments for each course. After doing really well at these 2 pre-assessments, I did a quick review of the material and completed and passed these 2 exams totaling 9 credits in under a month. Based on your competency levels, you could achieve higher number of credits in a given 6-month term. You can also have qualifying credits for professional certifications transferred at WGU thus reducing courses to complete, and hence the time to graduate. WGU’s tuition payment cycle is based on a “6-month term” where you pay flat fee per term. Within a term, you are allowed to take any number of courses that you can realistically accomplish in that time frame. This means depending your abilities and time for study, you can complete additional courses and attain......

...Approach Practically speaking, what does it mean when we say that WGU’s programs are competency-based? Unlike traditional universities, WGU does not award degrees based on credit hours or on a certain set of required courses. Instead, you will earn your degree by demonstrating your skills, knowledge, and understanding of important concepts through a series of carefully designed courses. Progress through your degree program is governed not by classes but by satisfactory completion of the required courses that demonstrate your mastery of the competencies. Of course, you will need to engage in learning experiences as you brush up on competencies or develop knowledge and skills in areas in which you may be weak. For this learning and development, WGU has a rich array of learning resources in which you may engage under the direction of your student mentor. You will work closely with your mentor to schedule your program for completing the courses. You will also work closely with additional faculty members as you proceed through courses of study that are designed to lead you through the content you must master in order to pass the assessment(s) for each course. The benefit of this competency-based system is that it makes it possible for people who are knowledgeable about a particular subject to make accelerated progress toward completing a WGU degree, even if they lack college experience. You may have gained skills and knowledge of a subject while on the job,...

Nursing Leadership

...Organizational Systems and Quality Leadership[->0] Nursing Leadership Jean Marion WGU For every patient, there is a team of healthcare professionals collaborating to determine the best plan of care for that patient. As a part of that team, nurses have a great opportunity to advocate for the patients and have a positive impact on patient care outcomes. By being a good leader, the nurse can make the patients needs knows, demonstrate exceptional patient care, and motivate and inspire the team to do the same. There are strategies that nurses on an interdisciplinary team use to enable them to exert leadership without occupying a formal leadership position. One strategy is to be a good role model. If the nurse is professional, kind, respectful, honest, and trustworthy, others are more likely to be the same while working with her. If someone in the group is always "goofing off," and being disrespectful, it can disrupt the entire group. The role model nurse will always do what’s in the best interest of the patient. They come to work on time and as scheduled. They are knowledgeable, and participate in continuing education. The other members of the team will respect a good role model and come to her with questions or when needing advice. A good role model will not put others down, or make them feel stupid; she will educate, and mentor. These qualities will make others look to her for leadership. A second strategy is to take responsibility for problems....

Medicaid Task 2

...Medicaid: An Understanding Christina S. WGU Medicaid is a government program that is aimed at helping insure people who have limited income, for themselves and their children. It’s a great program that helps insure millions of people who would otherwise go uninsured. Because Medicaid is a federal government payer program, it is held to high standards when it comes to state licensure and accreditation. Healthcare professionals must get legal approval to practice from the state licensure. They must maintain accurate information like, contact information, products and services furnished and more. The Physician Quality Reporting System is one way to help meet clinical quality standards and report them. The eligible professionals are responsible for making sure they are using the documents for the correct program year. This program also encourages them to report information that will help them assess the quality of care they provide to their patients, helping to ensure that patients get the right care at the right time (CMS.gov, Physician quality reporting system, 2015.) Another one of the ways Medicaid is effected by this is through the Conditions of Participation (CoPs) and Conditions for Coverage (CfCs) that was developed by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Through this healthcare organizations have to meet these health and safety standards to start and continue participating in the Medicaid program. CMS also ensures that the standards...
