What Are The Good Mentors In The Other Wes Moore's Life

Every choice a person makes changes their life. Those changes maybe good or they may be bad. In The Other Wes Moore by Wes Moore, there are two people with one name, Wes Moore, but they each have two completely different fates because of the decisions they made. Two qualities of becoming successful in life are having good mentors and setting and maintaining standards. The author Wes had good mentors to guide him through his life and set standards for himself. He had two significant mentors in his life, his mother and father. His father died when Wes was young, but his father still had an impact on him. "'Hey, Main Man, do you mind if I come in?' I'm told that he had many terms of endearment for me, but Main Man is the one I remember" (Moore …show more content…
The people in Wes's life do not reflect good things onto Wes. One of these mentors is his father who never knew his own son. "Wes didn't understand why, but he felt a tension in the room. Mary looked down at her son and uttered the words she had never said before and never thought she would have to say. 'Wes, meet your father'" (Moore 25). Wes's father is always drunk or hung over and couldn't even recognize his son. The other mentor in Wes's life is his older brother, Tony. "He had heard it before. He loved his brother but had learned to ignore his occasional 'do as I say, not as I do' tirades. Tony, by contrast, was desperately trying to give his little brother information he thought he needed, the kind of information that Tony never got" (Moore 27). Tony was involved in the drug "game", and he was always telling Wes to not get involved with it, even though Tony was involved. Wes could've set standards for himself and accomplish many things but instead he didn't and was always getting in trouble. "Wes had no intention of going to school. He was supposed to meet Woody later— they were going to skip school with some friends, stay at Wes's house, and have a cookout" (Moore 59). Wes chose not to go to school and that one choice led to many other bad choices. In order to succeed in life you need good mentors and to set and achieve goals. The author Wes was able to succeed in life because he was

The Successful Path

...Success and failure are two sides of the same coin. Everyone has equal chance of getting either side; however, receiving the proper guidance and support when he or she needs makes the ultimate difference. ‘The Other Wes Moore’ tells a story about two boys with similar names, similar backgrounds, growing up in similar neighborhood in Baltimore. Despite their many similarities, the choices they each made are what granted them separate fates. The author, Wes Moore, ends up as a graduate of John Hopkins University, a White House fellow, an army officer and the co-author of the book. The other Wes Moore ends up as a thief, drug dealer and a convicted killer. It is not luck that determines their different fate in life, but rather their mothers who influenced their futures. In ‘The Other Wes Moore’, the author Wes Moore illustrates that if children do not have strong parental figures and proper guidance, they will not be successful in life. Among the numerous factors that led the two Wes Moores to different paths, their mothers played the most vital role. The other Wes’s mother, Mary, does not provide the guidance that her son requires so desperately. After skipping school and partying with his friends, Wes returned to his house visibly intoxicated. Instead of being concerned, Mary and her boyfriend seemed to be entertained by Wes’s state saying, “Well, at least now you know how bad it feels and you will stay away from drinking” (Moore 62). Instead of giving some sort of punishment...

American Civilisation

...among people in America – yet the United States is factually a socially highly unequal society. In most parts of America, the laws and social customs strongly restrain people from doing harm to themselves and others by smoking – yet the laws and social customs only weakly restrain people from doing harm to themselves and others by the use of guns, and the murder rate is about four times as high per capita as in Western Europe. The usa is the world’s remaining super-power – yet internally the American state is in some ways strikingly weak. The usa has ‘saved the world for democracy’ on more than one occasion – but has itself become an aggressive militaristic society. And there appears to be an increasing divergence between how a large proportion of Americans view themselves and their country and how they are perceived by a large proportion of the 95 per cent of the world’s population who are not Americans. Hunting down myths It has been said that sociologists must be ‘myth-hunters’, tracking down popular beliefs that are ill founded (Elias 1978: 50-70). Whether simply exposing such beliefs to contrary evidence deployed by academics is sufficient to kill off myths and bring them home for mounting on the walls of our university departments is highly debateable. Nevertheless, we have a duty to call them in question, and enter into debate with those who want to keep them alive in the big-game reserve of public opinion. In my recent book The American Civilizing Process (Mennell 2007)...

The first generation to be intellectually together. The first generation to be limited only by our imaginations. We stand both before and after, balancing on the razor edge of the Event Horizon of the Singularity. That this sublime juxtapositional tautology has gone unnoticed until now is itself remarkable. We're so exquisitely privileged to be living in this time, to be born right on the precipice of the greatest paradigm shift in human history, the only thing that approaches the importance of that reality is finding like minds that realize the same, and being able to make some connection with them. ...FROM THE AUTHOR OF THE BESTSELLING BIOGRAPHIES OF BENJAMIN FRANKLIN AND ALBERT EINSTEIN, THIS IS THE EXCLUSIVE BIOGRAPHY OF STEVE JOBS. Based on more than forty interviews with Jobs conducted over two years—as well as interviews with more than a hundred family members, friends, adversaries, competitors, and colleagues—Walter Isaacson has written a riveting story of the roller-coaster life and searingly intense personality of a creative entrepreneur whose passion for perfection and ferocious drive revolutionized six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, and digital publishing. At a time when America is seeking ways to sustain its innovative edge, Jobs stands as the ultimate icon of inventiveness and applied imagination. He knew that the best way to create value in the twenty-first century was to connect creativity with technology. He built a company where leaps of the imagination were combined with remarkable feats of engineering. Although Jobs cooperated with this book, he asked for no control over what was written nor even the right to read it before it was published. He put nothing offlimits. He encouraged the people he knew to speak honestly. And Jobs speaks candidly, sometimes brutally so, about the people he worked with and competed against. His friends, foes, and colleagues provide an unvarnished view of the passions, perfectionism, obsessions, artistry, devilry, and compulsion for control that shaped his approach to business and...
