...Poetic Devices and Practical Criticism on Robert Frost’s “Fire and Ice” Poetic devices are the most important part of poetry writing. A good poet will always use poetic devices to make the reader involved in the lyrics of his/her poem. And when a poet does this, the reader starts feeling and thinking in the same manner as the poet thinks and feels. This is what Robert Frost does to a reader when he writes a poem. One of his all time favorite poem is Fire and Ice. Frost portrays a huge connotation to his readers through this poem (Kuiper 23). By means of poetic devices, he divulges what will eventually bring this world to an end. Frost provides the readers with two paths i.e. fire and ice which will eventually end to this world. Fire and Ice is a poem that itself does not need a lot of explanation regarding the meanings of phrases or words, owing to Frost’s focus on making the poem clear and comprehensible by all. In spite of the cleanness of the use of language, the poem brings with it very profound thematic thoughts. Basically, Frost is giving comments upon two of the shadowy characteristics of human beings: the capability to be consumed by envy and lust and the capability to hate (Mishra 103). He brings up the highly debated topic of how the world is going to end. Two ways that he thinks the world will end is through fire and ice. Both fire and ice have deeper metaphorical meanings than just on the literal meaning of the poem. Fire can be used in the literal meaning of the word. In the second line of the poem Frost talks about how the world could end in fire. This topic is an extremely well researched thought and has a very real possibility of that happening. ...My Take on Environmentalism There are many types of environmental problems that the world is experiencing nowadays, be it the pollution found in the cities, deforestation of natural rainforests, and the melting of the polar ice caps. One of the worst environmental problems, if not the worst, that the Earth is currently facing is global warming. Global warming is the gradual increase of the Earth’s surface temperature, mainly due to the effects of certain greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide emissions from either deforestation or monoxides found in pollution. These gases would trap the heat that would supposedly escape from the surface of the Earth, which would effectively increase the Earth’s surface temperature. From the name itself, we can already know the main effect of global warming to the Earth. There is this gradual change in temperature, more specifically, a rise in temperature of the Earth’s climate system. From this rise in temperature, more side effects would be branching out. Some of these include the depletion of different bodies of water, forest fires, unpredictable weather, and the melting of the polar caps. It would be fair to say that humans must reap what they sow, that because we have been burning fossil fuels and cutting down trees, we deserve to suffer the consequences given by global warming. This exact scenario is shown in the short story; "Save as many as you ruin" by Simon Van Booy. The story takes place in New York, and even more precise; in a snowy Manhattan. We follow Gerard who is an alone-father with his eight year old daughter Lucy. Gerard loves Lucy as much as a father can love his child. Gerard has been with loads of women, but the one he truly ever loved, and still loves is Laurel, unfortunately is Laurel not the biological mother of Lucy. Issy is Lucy's real mother. Gerard cheated on Laurel, so he could be with Issy. This is the part which can be connected to the introduction of the essay, since Gerard chose to harm Laurel by sleeping with another woman. Current trends in fiction take a more internal focus; the demons are no longer caricatures that seek to maim and kill for evil reasons but personal thoughts and desires.
