The United States First Amendment states that people have the right for absolute freedom of speech, which raises concern for when freedom of speech should be limited. Being able to speak freely is important. It allows us to speak our minds without being punished for our ideas. Freedom of speech in relevance to our time is very crucial. More and more people are beginning to voice their opinions and the construction of free speech is one of great importance. When thinking of free speech many issues and topics come into play. Today it seems that free speech in social networking has become increasingly prevalent. Over four hundred million people across the world are involved in some sort of social network, thus the importance of their voice when dealing with free speech. People want their voice to be heard, especially using things such as Twitter and Facebook. The issue of this however concerns the creators and if they should monitor what is being said on these sites. If social networking sites were to monitor our every action and every word, would we feel as if they abide by the freedom of speech law? ...Curse or Blessing Personal responsibility (PR) is a blessing and despite what a lot of people think, PR allows you freedom in life because with a high level of personal responsibility. (Lawson, 2011) When we acknowledge this, we will make choices in our life that will lend to us achieving the goals we set for ourselves, and will make the path to reaching those goals much more defined and with fewer obstacles. To me, personal responsibility means owning up to the actions you make in your life; good, bad, and indifferent. It also means that when acknowledged, we hold the key to our own “destiny” and we cannot rely on anyone other than ourselves to get to where we want to be in life. I put destiny in quotations because according to "Merriam-Webster.com" (2012), destiny is defined as “a predetermined course of events often held to be an irresistible power or agency”, and to me it cannot be predetermined if we hold our destiny in our own hands, our destiny can changes with every decision we make. There is a very distinct relationship between PR and success in college, most noticeably with the amount of effort a student puts into the courses they take. It is up to each student to make a conscience decision on how much effort they put in, and like most things; what you put in is what you get out. The research that I have conducted has afforded me the opportunity to speak with, listen, and develop a stronger understanding of the Islamic faith. ...After careful consideration, I elected to write my final paper on the works of author, Walt Whitman. The reason I selected this author is because I have travelled to the Atlantic coast and driven over the Walt Whitman Bridge numerous times, never knowing who he was, or what he did. When I saw his name in the textbook, I was intrigued. I decided I wanted to educate myself and analyze his work. The first poem I studied by him was “Beat! Beat! Drums!”. In this poem he speaks of bugles and drums, and the sounds that originate from them. In the first paragraph, he states “Through the windows-through doors-burst like a ruthless force, Into the solemn church, and scatter the congregation, Into the school where the scholar is studying;” I interpreted this to mean the sound of the bugles and drums carry through windows and doors and interrupt those that are around them. They hear the sounds being made, and cannot shut them out. He continues by saying “Make no parley-stop for no expostulation” (Whitman, para 3). To me, this means that that he wants the sounds to keep coming, regardless of any complaints from elsewhere. I am thinking that this has something to do with the military, and the bugles and drums that are being played are a way to express to everyone that it is happening and unavoidable regardless of pleas from mothers and children.
