Have you ever been in a situation where you wanted to give up because of how exhausted you were, but you kept on going anyways? If so then you could be a hero! Through thick, thin, and the most trying of circumstances; heroes keep going with their heart in it to put forward their best effort. That’s what being a hero is, doing tasks whole-heartedly to provide their best work, and to not give up.
Depending on the person, ‘hero’ can mean something different. Including how they function in our world. Society can, and “continue to idolize the heroic and even create fictional characters if they cannot find real-life heroes. Heroes serve as models as the best of humanity.” (Breeze Online) Everyone wants these heroes, these ‘Supermen’ (Though heroism is not limited to just men) to come into their lives to ‘save’ them. Society may not recognize the simple, every day heroes because they could be too caught up waiting for their fantasized …show more content…
Some things ‘heroes’ do can deem them un-heroic, and there are decisions and traits we don’t tend to think of as ‘heroic’. A hero doesn’t spontaneously do acts to hopefully be deemed heroic, nor do they abuse the power of their ‘hero’ status; “The celebrity who remains modest and treats others with respect, or uses his position to help society.” (Stone 63) In other words, when a hero is given recognition they should use their newfound status to help those around them. Heroes do not give up after major disturbances in their lives, and it’s not that they don’t feel anything, but they know that if they break down and give up they will never be able to regain their footing. They would be grounded forever, so after tragedy they “do everything with twice as much enthusiasm.” (Cassian 56) No matter how hard life tries to push a hero down, they always can get back up, and laugh in life’s face. Heroes maybe in the dark of today, but they are the light of

Achilles Vs Beowulf Essay

...What comes to mind when you hear the word hero? Many do not realize what it takes to become a hero. In the short story Beowulf, he was considered a hero because he was brave and stood up for himself. Consequently, in the Iliad, Achilles was seen as a hero by many for the battles he fought. People do not understand that there is more to it than just saving a person from danger and defeating bad guys to be a hero. Some people believe to be considered a hero, they must have the courage and be brave. In both the Iliad and Beowulf, the characters exhibit heroic qualities such as strength, bravery, and be independence. Beowulf showed his strength when he fought Grendel’s Mother. In the quote “If weapons were useless he’d use his hands, the strength in his fingers. (line 489).” For example, this means that Beowulf would continue to show how strong he is with or without a weapon. To have strength means to be strong and be able to put up a fight. In the Iliad Achilles shows strength when he encountered Hector. In the quote “Achilles drove his point straight through the tender neck, but not cutting his windpipe, leaving Hector able to speak and to respond (line 166).” Additionally, this means that Achilles used his strength by putting his sword through Hector tender neck and by putting up a fight. To have bravery means to not be afraid and...

Definition Essay On Christopher Reevee

...“The hero is never the star of the story” (Manson). This means that the hero never does anything for the attention it would bring. In the words of Christopher Reeve, “Heroes are heroes not because they have power, but because they have the maturity levels necessary to use said powers for the good of humanity.” Heroism is evolving to a higher level of human being and being greater than oneself without recognition (Stone). This means that a hero is someone that has become greater than a regular person, and not only for attention. In essence, the purpose of a hero is to do something extra-ordinary. Not everyone can become a great hero, but a great hero can come from anyone. They have completed their purpose, and have achieved something special. Each hero has a unique quality and/or objective. Now we remember them because of their noble cause in...

Heros

...Sweat April 23, 2013 2nd Period- English 11 Writing assignment 2- Who is your hero? Who is my hero? Well, a lot of people would say our troops. They are our hero, they fight for us every day. They fight for us to be able to say what we want, bare arms, not say a word, etc. Therefore, aren’t they our hero? Wait no, you said MY hero. Well I have a couple of heroes… but the most important, most significant hero in my life is this guy named John Carson. John Carson is my hero. He is my grandfather; but really he is my dad. The first reason he is my hero is because he saved me from a life that would probably not been so good. I met him when I was 2 years old. When I was about 5 years old my mom gave me to my grandparents; John and Rita Carson. He took me and my brother in. Which is about 14 years (this year). Me and my brother gave him about 573857837847258728 grey hairs since he got us, but he hasn’t stopped loving us, he has never left us, and he has never gave up. Papaw is my name for him. Papaw is my hero because I can walk up to him, crying or upset, and ask for a hug. And he will give me a hug. This makes him a hero to me because I don’t have a dad. He is my dad. So what this means to me, is that there is a man in my life who will be there for me when I’m upset about whatever it may be, he doesn’t care what the reason may be. He will comfort me. He will make me feel better. Sometimes that is what you need in your life, you don’t need to go to your mom, or grandmother in...

Hero

...what’s a hero” asked the child.” I don’t really know” replied the mom. So what do you think truly defines a hero. Well I think there are many traits a hero processes or at least should pocess. A hero isn’t always the guy with powers, who wears a cape and a pair of tights. Truthfully a hero can be anyone or anything, even an animal or a small child. I think a few traits a hero should definitely have are being helpful, kind, brave, and physically or mentally strong. They should also be a good role model. A person who is a villain of some kind is not a hero in fact they are the total opposite of a hero. Firstly the main function of a hero whether it being animal or person is to be a good role model. Not only should the hero be a role model for children but also for the people surrounding them, which includes adults. Another function of a hero would be to save people’s lives whether be literally or figuratively saving their lives. Many heroic figures like doctors, police, firefighters etc. save an abundant of lives every day. But that doesn’t mean that to be a hero you have to save lives every day. While some heroes save lives and are good role models others do not do both. Some heroes may just do good deeds and are good role models. However just because they don’t save lives doesn’t make them less of a hero. An example of this type of hero would be someone like your dad or mom. You could look at them as a heroic figure but that does not mean they save lives like a doctor does. All...

Heroism In Beowulf, Sir Gawain And The Green Knight

...Many have asked the question of what makes a hero someone to look up to. Or why is a hero a hero? The characters in the books Beowulf, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and The Knight's Tale all show the attributes of a hero. Beowulf takes place in what would now be modern day Denmark and Sweden while Sir Gawain and the Green Knight takes place in what is now Great Britain. Finally, The Knight's Tale is an ancient legend that comes from Greece. In one story Beowulf slays the dragon Grendel. Then the young Prince Beowulf slays Grendel's mother. Similarly, Gawain goes on a dangerous adventure to keep his word, while two noble knights fight over a beautiful lady in the third story. Since all can agree that heroes must be brave and willing to risk their lives for the good of others, these protagonists exemplify a hero....

The Odysseus: A True Hero

...Odysseus; Hero? “A true hero is not measured by the size of his strength, but by the strength of his heart.” This was said by Hercules in the Disney movie by the same name. Odysseus should not be judged on his physical strength, but rather how much he is willing to sacrifice of himself in order to save others. While he is strong and clever, his heart holds only arrogance. In the epic poem, The Odyssey, by Homer, Odysseus goes on many adventures while traveling home. However, he does make some bad decisions along the way. He chooses to be egotistical instead of keeping possible outcomes of his actions and thoughts in mind. These choices get him in trouble in many instances. He and his men had to escape from a cyclops and once he used his cleverness to get leave, his ego come out, which brought trouble to he and his men. Therefore, readers should know that Odysseus is not a hero because he displays carelessness, disloyalty, and arrogance on many occasions throughout the story....

If We Must Die Close Reading

...that it be a noble and honorable death as if you were to die a hero. If a hero were to die that is exactly the way there would go out, holding their head high and proud. McKays poem develops the idea of a hero and if one were to die a hero that they would let it be a nobly proud and honorable death. When the poem is first read it is vague exactly what McKay is referring to. But after rereading and analyzing specific parts of the poem lots of conclusions can be derived. Certain lines in the poem are what can make the argument so strong. The main quote that allows one to believe in such argument is on line 5 through 8. “If we must die—oh, let us nobly die, So that our precious blood may not be shed In vain; then even the monsters we defy, Shall be constrained to honor us though dead!”(CITE***) This quote has a lot of meaning behind it in the sense that it highlights the main idea of the whole poem about noble and honorable death as a hero. There are certain word within the quote that help defy the main idea of the poem. They are certain words that really exemplify the main meaning of the poem as a whole. Mckay clearly chose words and phrases especially in the quote chosen, to develop and connect back to the main meaning of the poem. Certain word show imagery while other words have a figurative meaning behind them. “In Vain” starts off a line that has some serious meaning to it. If one were to die in vain then it means that they were on a path to completing a certain...

...Heroes Paper The world needs heroes, but what really is a hero? A hero is someone who shows remarkable perseverance and courage. Perseverance means that you never give up and courage is when you are not afraid to do something. A hero should also be hard working which means they always do their best and does it diligently. Anyone who shows any of these qualities is a hero. A true hero is a person that is hard working. Jackie Robinson is perfect for this. He was the 1st African American to play major league baseball in history. His road to success was not so easy though. He was mistreated by all of the other white players in the league because they didn’t like him. Jackie Robinson was constantly getting big cuts on his legs because when he would slide into base, the other players would get him with the bottom of their cleats. Jackie Robinson was on the Brooklyn Dodgers so many of his own teammates did not like him. Many of the pitchers from other teams threw the ball at him which gave him many bruises. Despite all of this, Jackie Robinson became a star in baseball and led the Brooklyn Dodgers to a World Series appearance. This example of Jackie Robinson shows that no matter how much adversity you go through, if you keep on working hard, you can achieve great things. Heroes also show the great quality of perseverance. Harriet Tubman is someone who showed exemplary perseverance. She was a slave that worked hard, but was still abused by her plantation owner. One day she decided...

The Role Of A Hero In S. E. Hinton's The Outsiders

...What is a hero? What does it mean to be one? The Outsiders is written by S.E Hinton published in 1967 by the Viking Press, the most recent edition was published in 2006. One or more Greaser(s) can be considered a hero, there are many examples such as; Johnny and Ponyboy saved children from a burning fire, Ponyboy stopped Two-Bit from telling off Johnny’s mom, and Johnny risked his life to save Ponyboy’s. Firstly, Ponyboy and Johnny were found in a very difficult situation, Ponyboy was being brutally drowned in a fountain by Bob the Soc, and Johnny was about to be beat. This was a very traumatic moment, during this Johnny was trying to figure out how to save Ponyboy, then he had remembered his switchblade and pulled it out. As Ponyboy was nearing death he stabbed Bob and Bob fell to the floor. A quote from that scene is “They might have killed you, and they were gonna beat me up.” Pg 57 Many argue this is self defense and many argue it’s not, but this clearly states Randy was coming after Johnny too, so it does fall under self defense. Not only did Johnny save Ponyboy’s life he risked his. That is the work of a hero....

Is Odysseus A Hero In Modern Day Standards?

...Waiting for grade I believe Odysseus is not a hero in modern day standards because heroes in modern day standards wouldn't make decisions such as Odysseus does in the odyssey. Odysseus makes some bad mistakes and confrontations most heroes today would prevent and avoid. Most heroes today have made mistakes but Odysseus has made many. Is Odysseus a hero using modern day standards? No, but in some ways he can be. I strongly believe that Odysseus is not a hero in today's standards because he was not very worthy to his men and/or team this is demonstrated when he encounters the cyclops, Polyphemus for example. This is shown when Odysseus basically watches a couple of his men get eaten by this gargantuan beast and doesn't try to slay it. Afterwards he does stab it's eye with a giant log but he didn't do anything directly after the dreadful murdering.they get away and even after he has blinded the cyclops, he is taunting it on his way off of the island and puts his men in even more danger because Polyphemus is hurling boulders at the ship and nearly hits it multiple times....

...Begum ‘How far do you agree that Hero is presented as an ideal women in act one and act two?’ Hero is presented as an ideal women in act one and act two through the way other characters describe her, what Hero says and what she doesn’t say. However Beatrice’s non-conformity leads to ambiguity when trying to categorise her as an ideal women. The way other characters describe Hero presents clearly as her being an ideal women. “Is she not a modest young lady?” This quotation reveals one reason why Claudio admires hero as he claims that she is a modest young lady. He admires her for the respect and value she gives to others and in a sense it tells the audience that she is from a respected background. “That she is worthy, I know” This quotation has connotations or worth and value, ideally it is showing that Hero is following the rules and duties of the conventional women as other characters such as Don Pedro recognises them and through his statement it portrays her that way. Through what Hero says presents clearly as her being a ideal women. At the start of act two, Beatrice referred to Don John as being so sour and tartly looking that it gave her heartburn. Whereas Hero sympathises towards him and claims that; “He is of a very melancholy disposition” This quotation tells the audience that she is considering the sad position that Don John is in, even knowing that he is illegitimate. This also relates back to act one when Hero corrected Beatrice when she was referred...

...approach of how I make one. Dreaming a business plan You think I've gone mad expressing that you should "dream" a business plan. But let me explain what I mean here. A business plan is like a story, a series of episodes in a fantasy realm. A fantasy story always has a hero, a villain, friends that join forces and battles across many fields. Think of all the strategy actions in a business as a fictional story, and that way the creative side and facts will spring up from the surface, showing the visible paths that you need to follow, as does a hero. Let's go through this one by one with the main sections of a business plan, to which then you can choose however you wish. The mission Every business has a mission. It is the absolute purpose of why that particular company was founded. Facebook, for example was founded to make sharing and connections between friends more accessible. Milkbuster's mission is to allow entrepreneurs to share stories to build bridges of ideas to help creativity. A hero has a mission which usually lies into the "save the world" category, but an important mission none the less. What is your business venture aiming to do, think of it like a hero. Market Analysis The hero now has a mission, but he needs to know were to go. There are many continents that our hero can travel, but which one does he take? Does he go to the north, the east? Antigone and Macbeth

...Aristotle the fable (mythos) is more important than the characters in the play. It is so because the purpose with the tragedy, according to Aristotle, is to make the audience feel pity (eleos) and fear (fobos) and as a result achieve an emotional cleansing(Catharsis). In order to bring those feelings to the audience the tragedy must be complex. The tragedy must involve a peripeteia, meaning that a great person experiences a turning point, a reversal of fortune. This turning point must be caused by a mistake, the tragic hero's mistake (hamartia). This reversal of fortune cannot be prevented but it is an unforeseen result of the mistake the tragic hero makes. The tragic hero must during the play achieve a revelation(anagnorisis) that means that the hero will go from not knowing to knowing, and that could be about anything. All these elements are what makes a tragedy a good tragedy according to Aristotle. In 1963 Gustav Freytag, a...

Definition Essay On Heroism

...In the words of Brodi Ashton,“Heroes are made by the paths they choose, not the powers that they are graced with.” A true hero is not always the savior or warrior that you see in movies and comic books. To be a hero, you need courage, sacrifice, determination, and generosity.. A hero helps others before they help themselves, and that is what being a hero is really about, helping others. Being a hero takes a lot of work. They have more than one thing that they have to do. Each hero has different functions, but the main functions of a hero are protecting people, giving moral and mental support, overcoming the challenges that are given to the hero, helping people solve their problems, doing the right thing even if it is not easy, fighting for what you believe in, and being a good role model. These things are not always easy, in fact making good choices may be one of the hardest things in the world to do. The influence of others pushing you to do the wrong thing will always be there, a real hero knows how to make a good decision, having both others and him/herself in mind....
