What Does Resiliency Mean To My Mom

Submitted By
Words 258

Resiliency ultimately equals my mom. Through raising my brother and I as a single parent, and EVEN through the death of my brother, she has never given up. She has always worked hard and pressed forward, positively. To me, that is resiliency. She has set such a strong example for me to view life realistically but also with optimism. My mom is still the sweet and loving person I have always known her to be. Through all her tragedies, she has remained stable and a rock in my life. To me, that is resiliency.
It takes physical and mental resilience to run a marathon. I started distance running in 2015, and the amount of dedication and effort required to train to run 26.2 miles is enormous. Beginning a marathon race is quite daunting when you think

Ways We Are Ruining Our Children

...allowed to parent my own children. Though all of that is true sometimes, I assure you I am not as crazy as I sound, that my children are healthy and happy, and that most of the time they really do like me. Since having children, I have noticed some things. I have noticed that every time I see a smattering of stick people stickers on the back of a minivan, my soul dies a little. That commercials really are brainwashing my kids into thinking they need whatever new sugar frosted chocolate bombs in the shapes of kitties and bunnies cereal Kellogg’s has released this month. That if we don’t trek our children to Disneyworld before they are 5 years old, I’m pretty sure Walt Disney himself will rise from the dead and smite us all. But most of all, I have noticed the multitude of ways that we are ruining our children. 1. Participation trophies. Participation trophies are the biggest load of bull I have ever witnessed. The only time they are appropriate is if your child is playing in a 3 year old soccer league (quite frankly, I can’t believe this exists), and all they do is run around in circles, pick at the grass and their nose, and dig for bugs in the middle of the field. If they can make it through an entire game, they deserve a trophy. But everyone else, not so much. Let me let you in on a little secret that you might not want to hear, folks. Everyone isn’t a winner. Every one of you, at some point in your life, has been a loser. So have your kids. And so what? So what if your kid...

How Shame Impacts Women

...How Shame Impacts Women and Their Self-Concept. Lindsey M. Watts Norfolk State University Introduction Women have historically had to fight for their rights. When we consider issues like voting, being able to own and inherit property, and work in a variety of jobs, women have struggled to have equal rights. Our society has grown significantly in the acceptance of women in most roles previously considered to be masculine. While equal pay is still an issue it is still better than it used to be. As women have moved into the arena of working outside of the home new issues have emerged. Historically, women have provided the majority of the nurturing and guidance that their families and children needed to thrive. Their self-concept was wrapped up in their success as a mother and a wife. In today’s society women face many new challenges. How to balance working outside of the home with their responsibilities as a mother and a wife has become the focus. This has created new social and community expectations for women. For many women, these new expectations create a tremendous amount of stress and trigger feelings of shame when they are not successful at juggling all the responsibilities. Etiology of Shame We all experience shame. It is a universal emotion. Brown (2007) recognized after interviewing many women, that the first step to understanding shame was to define it in terms we can all understand. “Shame is the intensely painful feeling or experience of believing...

Resilience and Spirituality

...resilience, they must also have a strong faith. That faith does not have to be in God but it does have to be a faith in something that you believe with protect you and see you through life’s trials. While a belief in something other than God many help a person in the short term, it will ultimately fail them as everything falls short of the Lord.   What is Resilience? Simply defined, resilience is the ability bounce back or recoil after being mashed, twisted, or bent. This is a fitting definition as I know that when I have been faced with trauma, I often felt mashed, twisted, or bent. It is such a simple word with a simple meaning but putting into action can often feel almost impossible. Putting this into action requires strength. A person needs to have a strong resolve and a strong faith in order to bounce back in the face of trauma. We are faced with some sort of trauma on an almost daily basis (Maddi, 2013). From the moment we are born we are participating in the Resilience Life Cycle (Dees & Huckabee, 2011). This applies to people of all ages. Trauma and the ability to recover from it start the minute we are born. The actual act of being born is a traumatic experience in and of itself. Resilience is something we are born with and also something we can strengthen and grow as we get older. Many studies have shown the resilience of children to recover from serious traumatic events. However that resiliency is fostered through a positive development...

...AND QUALITY   Creativity, innovation and quality - what do these three possibly have in common? For any business to be successful, we need all three. Creativity drives the generation of ideas, and we need these constantly. We must continually reinvent our businesses. We must unleash the imagination of everyone in our organization. We must create the playfulness and fun to unleash this imagination. Albert Einstein knew that great thinkers don't have to take themselves too seriously and that: "Imagination is more important than knowledge." -Albert Einstein Innovation is the necessary step to turn these ideas into useful products and services, something we can provide to our customers, and something we can sell.   Quality, the entire set of tools now known as total quality management or TQM, is the way we ensure that we know our customers, their needs and expectations, and how we are going to meet these needs and exceed their expectations. Quality also helps us continuously improve our products and services and to continuously reduce our costs of providing them.   In this paper we'll try to pull together these three elements of successful entrepreneurship. All three elements - creativity, innovation and quality - have been studied extensively and independently. There are numerous books (or even libraries) about all three. At the end of the handout, we list some of the ones that we have found most useful.   What we hope to do here is give some new insights on the interactions...

Family Nursing Calgary Assessment Paper

...possess the solid foundation required to develop a plan and provide optimal care to their patients. This assessment is significant not only to individual patients, but their families, who are becoming increasingly recognized for their significance to the health and well being of individual family members. Nurses use a variety of tools in family nursing, and one of the most significant includes the Calgary Family Assessment Model (CFAM), developed by Wright and Leahey. CFAM is an integrated conceptual framework used for interviewing and making assessments of families. It consists of three major categories, structural, functional and development, and each category contains its own subcategories. This paper will demonstrate the assessment of my family, the Fournier Family, using the Calgary Family Assessment Model. Strengths and weaknesses of the family will be determined, information which is necessary for the development of three significant nursing diagnosis applicable to the family. Interventions to meet the outcomes of these diagnoses arise through collaboration between the nurse and family, as they develop strategies to promote, improve, and sustain effective family functioning. Through the use of this model, assessment, diagnosis and interventions will each be identified and applied to the Fournier Family in an effort to improve the families’ outcome as a unit. Blink - the Power of Thinking Without Thinking

...ALSO BY MALCOLM GLADWELL The Tipping Point To my parents, Joyce and Graham Gladwell Introduction The Statue That Didn’t Look Right In September of 1983, an art dealer by the name of Gianfranco Becchina approached the J. Paul Getty Museum in California. He had in his possession, he said, a marble statue dating from the sixth century BC. It was what is known as a kouros—a sculpture of a nude male youth standing with his left leg forward and his arms at his sides. There are only about two hundred kouroi in existence, and most have been recovered badly damaged or in fragments from grave sites or archeological digs. But this one was almost perfectly preserved. It stood close to seven feet tall. It had a kind of light-colored glow that set it apart from other ancient works. It was an extraordinary find. Becchina’s asking price was just under $10 million. The Getty moved cautiously. It took the kouros on loan and began a thorough investigation. Was the statue consistent with other known kouroi? The answer appeared to be yes. The style of the sculpture seemed reminiscent of the Anavyssos kouros in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens, meaning that it seemed to fit with a particular time and place. Where and when had the statue been found? No one knew precisely, but Becchina gave the Getty’s legal department a sheaf of documents relating to its more recent history. The kouros, the records stated, had been in the private collection of a Swiss physician named Lauffenberger...
