The Meaning Of Equality In The United States

...The meaning of equality has caused several problems throughout the United States. Equality, to me, is everyone being treated the same despite their race or gender. No one will ever be the same regardless of how many changes you make to him or her. I think everyone should be different. If not, I think we would live a very boring life. In the short story everyone was equal in every single way; however, that’s not what equality is about. Equality is about being treated the same by the government and everyone else of the matter. The 14th Amendment of the Constitution was known as a reconstruction amendment from the Civil War. This amendment freed the slaves and made everyone equal. It states, regardless of the gender or race, everyone can vote....

Gap of Sky

...This is one of the key themes in the short story The Indian Camp by Ernest Hemingway. In the story we follow the main protagonist Nick on his way to an Indian camp with his father where they are going to help an Indian woman in the birth of her child. These events force Nick into his journey of adulthood. The short story, Indian camp, revolves around a whole lot of things but most central is life and death, and part of the life cycle, is realising that death is real. And that is what Nick realises in his rite of passage. In the story we see Nick going from being an innocent child to being a more mature and open minded individual. We also see him opening his eyes, and realising that life is a lot more than just fun and games. There are a lot of themes in the story, but some of them include; father and son relationship, and maybe more importantly the loss of innocence. Nick naturally wants to be a part of whatever his dad is doing, as well as showing an interest in the work the father does. The father also wants to give his child an insight, to what he’s doing, even when his job shows its harsher sides. The theme loss of innocence is seen because Nicks finds out that life is not all sunshine and rainbows, as one would say. Nick experiences something that not all children experience, and that way his view of life is dramatically changed. Nick: Is a curious young boy, 8-10 years of age, quite little sensitive, which is seen in the story when the father says Nick can...

Research Paper On Harrison Bergeron

...The short story that is referred to as Harrison Bergeron is one that I have crossed paths with on multiple occasions during my academic career. This story takes place in the home of George and Hazel Bergeron. They are observing some type of dance entertainment with ballerinas wearing mask. Right away it generates a mysterious tone, almost the tone of a horror story. During the broadcast of the ballerinas, a news alert pops on the screen and a broadcaster who struggled with speaking clearly appeared. I found this incredibly ironic, this added to the mystery. This man hands the news to one of the ballerinas she delivers the news that Harrison, the son of George and Hazel has escaped prison and is loose, and is considered dangerous. It mentioned he was seven foot, how often do you see a seven foot 14 year old boy?...

Of Mice And Men American Dream Theme Essay

...One of the most important themes in the story is The American Dream is difficult to achieve. There are several examples of this theme, including George and Lennie, Curley's wife, Candy, and Crooks. One of the first examples of this theme can be seen in the chapter that is focused on Crooks the stable buck. In this chapter Crooks was at first shooting down Lennie’s idea that he and George were going to own land. “You're nuts. I seen hundreds of men come by on the road an’ on the ranches, with their bindles on their backs...an’ every damn one of ‘em’s got a little piece of land in his head. An’ never a God damn one of’ em gets it,” (72 ). Crooks starts off in denial, but after Lennie continues to talk about it and after Candy tells about how they already have the money he is convinced and even asks if he can join in on the plan. But Crooks' hope about finally being able to do something and not be ruled by anyone is short lived due to being belittled by Curley's wife. After he stands up to her she gets angry and reminds him that because he is black he doesn't have the power to do anything and she could easily get him hanged if she wanted to. Her words discourage Crooks and make him feel dumb for thinking he was actually going to be able to live on his own land and be free to do what he wants. Crooks re-realizes how...

Of Mice and Men

...Reading File – Class 5   1.   Summary Retell the story in your own words or attach a good summary from the internet (mentioning your source)..... The book Of Mice and Men is about two poor guys, George and Lennie, who travel together to find work. Lennie is a big, clumsy  man, who doesn’t know his own strength and he is also childlike, simple and easily forgetful. Lennie goes through  life with his fellow George, a smart guy and hard worker who takes care of Lennie. The book starts with  them walking down a road, they ran away from their job in Weed because the stupid, innocent Lennie touched a ladie’s dress (because Lennie likes soft things). Lennie and George have a shared dream: having their own farm, where they can keep all kinds of animals, and can live from their harvest when they have saved enough money. When they on their way to a ranch, hoping to find work, they sleep in the clearing (a place near a river) for one night. The next day they come to the bunkhouse and they get a job. Soon they meet the other workers on the ranch, including Curley, the son of the boss. Curley is mean, aggressive and a lightweight-boxer. Because he is so small he doesn’t like big guys, he feels threatened by them. So an aggressive look and a rude attitude is his first reaction when he sees big Lennie. The next day when Curley comes into the room, Lennie is attacked by Curley. But strong Lennie defends himself and crushes  (accidentally) the hand of Curley, because he tried to stop...

Sacrifice In John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men

...Sacrifice & Dreams “If you don’t sacrifice for what you want, what you want will become the sacrifice.” This quote fulls captures the meaning of what it means to sacrifice something. It indicates that if a person has a desire for something, it is something which is worth the sacrifice. Sacrifice is something what should be done in a timely manner because otherwise, what is being desired can be taken away in an instant. John Steinbeck illuminates this idea of sacrifice through a character from Of Mice and Men. In the story, the characters learn the consequences of sacrifice and what it actually takes to achieve a dream. Through George’s character and actions, Steinbeck reveals that in order to fully realize a dream, one must sacrifice things which are the most meaningful to them. ...the short stories inside the book Somebody Told Me, written by Rick Bragg, committed a great amount of misconduct, and then had deep regrets afterwards. In “Just a Grave for a Baby but Anguish for a Town,” a church asked the family of a mixed race baby to remove her body so they could keep it a white’s only grave yard. Two soldiers in the story “Fort Bragg Area is haunted by Ghost and Two New Deaths,” were charged of murder for killing two innocent African Americans. In “Emotional March Gains a Repentant Wallace,” all George C. Wallace wanted was forgiveness for his horrid actions during the civil rights movement. The individuals gave sincere apologies for their wrong doings; however, their forgiveness will never remove the hurt in the hearts of the ones who were affected. All Jamie Wireman wanted was for her beloved baby girl to rest in peace. Whitney Johnson only lived nineteen hours, and was buried right beside her grandfather in the Barnett’s Creek Baptist Church cemetery. Jamie and the rest of the family became overwhelmed after the church found out Whitney was a mixed race baby and asked for her body to be removed and buried somewhere else; “‘There was no peace in it,’ Ms. Wireman said. ‘It was bad enough that the Lord decided to take my baby. But then they wouldn’t let her rest’” (Bragg 182). Only did the church ask for a sincere apology after the whole community found out and began to look down upon the deacons who took part in the atrocious act. Even though what the...

Trayvon Martin

...Ethical Dilemma Paper Trayvon Martin Case Sonji Toussaint-Watson CJA/324 June 24, 2013 Angela Sonsalla Ethical Dilemma-Trayvon Martin The current story in the news that I have chosen to write about is the Trayvon Martin murder. I asked myself now what role did society play in this case? Society has labeled young black men who dress a certain way that is a fashion first and foremost for many of the youths today as being a criminal, or they look suspicious because of the clothing that they wear. Benz (2012) website, the journalist has not done a good job covering this heated, sensitive set of events. We have rushed to paint the story as too simply explained by racism, we have rushed to judgment on whether an arrest should be made, we have given enormous time to the loudest voices and spent precious little time digging for new perspectives or analyzing the laws and community standards in question. Besides editing the 911 tapes, we have been shown year old photographs, the photo of Trayvon Martin smiling; the very young teenager in the Hollister T-shirt is four years old. Trayvon did not look like the same child on the picture within the months before he was murdered. The photo of Geroge Zimmerman, the one of him in an orange jump suit is a mug shot that was taken 7 years ago based on an arrest that was later dropped. What subliminal messages are sent by showing a smiling 15 year old boy who was killed by a menacing man who was once in jail? Is this a truthful representation...
