...Schools are trying to push back start times in school for children to get more sleep. If this happens many events could be disrupted. If schools start earlier we will lose money and this will result in many catastrophic events. Should schools take this chance? Schools should not start later, it could disrupt children’s after school schedule and cost a lot of money. Will school’s use this or not. If we started school later it will be costing about 8 million dollars to change the bus schedules. During this time, many students will choose to play a high school sport, a very popular one being ice hockey. It’s no secret that hockey is a physical sport, and this is why many teenage boys are attracted to it. Typically though, a student who chooses to play ice hockey at the high school level is not new to the game. In most cases they began the game at an age of any where from 5 to 9, and soon after started participating in travel leagues that compete in as many as 100 games per season (Burge). As a direct result of the intense lifestyle players are forced to adapt to at such a young age, one of two things will happen; either a ‘burnout’ occurs and a total loss of interest for the sport takes over, or an intense life-long love for it develops (Burge); this love is often shared with parents and fans as well. As a player matures and begins to play in more high-caliber leagues, the physicality and hectic atmosphere of the games increase. The full speed drills with full contact has led to this happening and now people are standing up for their safety of the kids. In the NFL they are trying to implement rules on having just 2 personal fouls per player to limit concussions. This will take effect in the future years. Most of these concussion injuries happen in practice nearly 2 per team. This was 8 percent of all concussions. They have just continued to climb. Nearly 45% of concussions in football happen on pass plays. There are also studies about going to no Helmets in the NFL. ...surgeon my freshman year of high school. I played football and during one of the most important games of our season, I ran a route to catch the football my quarterback had thrown to me. The ball was under-thrown, so I dove hoping to score the touchdown. After the hit I thought the cornerback hit a nerve in my knee, and the pop was like popping a knuckle. After a few days of pain and doctor visits it turned out that I had torn my anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Two months after the tear, I had surgery on my right knee. The process of how the doctor knew everything about the knee captivated me. It is what shaped my desire for orthopedics.
