Last school holiday, my family and I went back to our hometown, the eagerly-awaited holidays bring a respite from homework, lessons, extracurricular activities and exams. For me, spending a holiday at home is equally unbearable. 0n the last day of school, I eagerly waited for the bell to ring at 1:10 p.m.. Then, I felt like a caged bird hat has just been set free. I slang my bag over my shoulder and make a beeline for the bust station. My hometown! We started our journey early in the morning. When we arrived, we had a quick lunch. I make a short exchange and headed for my favourite spot here- a secluded corner of my grandfather durian orchards. There under a shady spot, I sat down a surveyed the surroundings. Here, far away from claustrophobic classrooms, rushing crowds, busy sidewalks and congested streets, I enjoyed the solitude of nature. As I took my seat on a flimsy woody bench, and looked around me, I can see a flurry of activities. Birds flew gracefully and noiselessly above me while bees traveled flirtatiously from tree to tree, colourful butterflies flit about here and there flapping their fragile wings and ants scurry in a single file carrying bits of food on their tiny backs. A soft cool breeze blowed. I can hear the soft rustle of leaves. The air is heavy with the scent of shrubs and grasses coupled with the scent of ripe durians. I lied on my back with my hand clasped behind my head and watched streaks of sunlight filtering through the canopy of leaves. Soon I fall into short but deep slumber. When I woke up, I can see the sun slowly descending behind a row of far hills. Although I would love to linger for a little longer, I moved away reluctantly and leaved knowing that Opah would be waiting for me.

Billie Holiday

...her legacy lives on through her music. Billie Holiday was born as Eleanora Fagan Gough in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on April 7, 1915, to a single mother. Her alleged father, Clarence Holiday, who ultimately became a successful jazz musician, was absent from her life except for an occasional visit. Without a father figure in her life, she began getting into trouble, mainly by ditching school. In January of 1925, at the tender age of 9, Holiday was sent to the House of Good Shepherd, a home for problematic girls of African-American heritage. She stayed in the home for approximately eight months before returning to her mother’s care. She eventually returned to the House of Good Shepherd after allegedly being sexually assaulted in 1926. Music became her salvation. She would listen to Bessie Smith and Louie Armstrong and sing along with them. She started singing at local clubs in New York City after following her mother there. It was during this time in 1930 that she changed her name to “Billie”, supposedly after the actress Billie Dove. Holiday’s troubles did not end in childhood. She had difficulty with relationships, chose unsuitable men and drank excessively. Her first husband, James Monroe, whom she married in1941, introduced her to opium. Although Holiday and Monroe were not divorced until 1947, the time they actually spent together as husband and wife did not last long. Even after their separation, Holiday continued to abuse controlled substances and......

...summer holiday and after a year of studies. Personally I had more to look forward to, than just the holiday. I was the winner of a fully paid trip to the southern coast. Everyone envied me and wished they would be in my shoes for a moment. But as for me, it was a different case. Unlike the excitement and joy that people celebrated for my win, I really regretted for participating in the competition, because I had a problem with the prize. My course instructor was excited very much, since she was to accompany me for the trip. I knew she was particularly eyeing the huge sum of money that would be allocated to us on the day of the trip start. Word went round the school and the neighborhood about my achievement. I approached the school authorities and expressed my desire not to take up the trip. They argued that it will be an insult to their sponsors and that I had to go regardless of the situation. Personally I did not want anything to do with water. I was water phobic. I had attended psychiatric lesson to try and end my fear for water. Everyone talked of how fun a holiday at the coast will be, but the single thought of having water around me freaked me out. I came to learn that we had been booked a hotel suit on one of the islands. This was getting even worse. The reason why I believed water was only safe in a glass was the story my mother narrated to me about how we lost my dad in the sea. She told me how I fell out of boat when I was only three years old on a holiday. My......

It is possibly the first time they have had to travel to a different venue to sit a test. They might be emotional and distracted by unfamiliar surroundings. In some cases, it is even a big day out together with a trip to the city on the bus or train. If we give our students lots of practice, they will feel confident about what is expected of them in the test, and what they will have to do. In addition to preparing for task types, these four practice tests utilise language – both grammatical structures and vocabulary – that is in the ESOL Flyers syllabus. This book consolidates the language with Flyers-style usage. As young learners need constant recycling of the language studied, there are some additional activities outlined below that can consolidate language from the course and help prepare for the tests. Many courses present and practise language topic by topic. Here students will find the themes and language structures mixed together and find they need to jump from one to another in their...

A Domestic Type of Christmas

...gentle or good man. I haven't seen or spoke to him in eleven years, but I know with a certainty I can say that and it still be true. Men like him do not change, they do not grow, they do not admit fault. A few of my posts have spoken of the memories of him that are forever seared into my mind. I sometimes needed to write a bit about him to help you understand certain points or feelings I have now as an adult. I can go months and months without ever having him cross my mind, and that's fine with me. I do not want him in my life, my children know that he is alive and that he is a very bad, bad man. While he's never shown stalking or interest in my life since my mother left him all those years ago, I still take the precautions to warn the school and keep him on the no pick up list with the phrase "contact police immediately" written underneath. Although he could not access my children's school anyway, since they are military children on a base with great security...that is the type of fear he has so gratefully bestowed upon me during my childhood. It lingers and haunts me, and it does even more so during the holiday season. I could write of the beatings, emotional scarring, terror, sexual abuse, and general asshole-iness he loved to dole out to his family on a near daily basis. I could retell any number of situations from my childhood that would make you cringe, tear up, or feel pity for my family. I don't say this with pride or expectation; I say this because I want you......

I have dedicated myself to the school – and I hope you will be proud of me. I see that my last post was last summer right before senior year! I feel awful, but maybe I could make it up to you, by writing what has happened since last summer. Let me take you back too my last year at high school! At the end of the summer holidays, I told myself that I would do whatever it takes to get the highest grades in my entire year. I know it was an exaggerated wish, but as you may know I always do my best to achieve my goals! So the day before first day of school, I renewed all of my school stuff, I just threw it right in the thrash. I got new books, dictionaries and a new cupboard, so I could organize my folders and books into the different classes! Back then my closest friends; you know who - JJ, Michael and my boyfriend Jasper, just thought I was geeky and they would make jokes about it all the time. At first I did not bother being teased by them, I know it was meant in the kindest way! School started and I was prepared! School was a battlefield and I was a samurai warrior who would destroy everything, and win the battle! I always sit at front row and raised my hand every time I had the chance! I tried to keep in touch with JJ, M and Jasper; of course Jasper was my first priority. I......

Social Studies Holiday Problem

...Reducing the summer holiday of secondary education by 1 week Social Problem At first there were a lot of discussions about changing the mandatory school hours from 1000 to 1040. Now the government wants to shorten the summer holiday of all secondary schools in Holland. They want to shorten the holiday from 7 to 6 weeks. They have been discussing this topic for quite some time but the notion was eventually accepted on the 26th of June 2012. This will be introduced after the school year of 2013 to 2014. This would affect over 659 secondary schools, 939.629 students and 106.700 teachers (2011 studies), which is a very big group. This makes it a great social problem. Many newspapers and other media have addressed this social problem. To prevent this law from passing, teachers and students went on strikes. We do think this social problem has something to do with the rule of law, parliamentary problem and with a pluralist society. We don’t think it has something to do with Welfare state. Welfare state is more about the government supporting people economically or through healthcare. As this social problem is not about whether the government should support people, we don’t consider this to be within the theme of Welfare state. As it his got something to do with rules and laws(obligatory education, the minimum amount of school hours and the teachers and students right to have days off) and the freedom of people we think it is part of the theme Rule of Law. As for Parliamentary......

...1. What is the culture that you chose to research? I chose to do my research over Egypt because I haven’t really ever looked into the culture because I figured it was nothing more than mummies, hieroglyphics and the ancient pyramids. Let’s not forget the scorching deserts that is mostly inhabited by, which I believed was the only type of landscape that existed for the country. I stand corrected regardless of all the movies I’ve seen and video games I’ve played that showed this countries blistering deserts and colossal monuments. After doing my research, I’ve learned more than I could have ever imagined, despite what I had an idea of this country, my perspective has now changed. 2. Where are they geographically? Egypt is located in the Northeastern corner of Africa and is separated from Libya and North Africa by the western desert, from Palestine and Israel by the desert of the Sinai Peninsula, and from the center of population in the Sudan by desert except along the narrow Nile River. This part of the country is known as the gift of Nile. About 96 percent of the population resides in the Nile Valley, which is where most of the economic and social activity occurs. The Mediterranean coast, which is a neighbor to Egypt, is where more of the human activity occur along with much of the agriculture and animal husbandry. Personal Statement

... I am currently in my high school's last year in scientific section and I would like to enrol in a British University in order to acquire an education that will best prepare me for working life. I find the studies that are offered in British universities more open-minded that in France because chemistry with management doesn't really exist here, you have to choose or chemistry or management. I gradually became interested in chemistry at school. Last year my teacher wanted us to discover what chemistry really was by giving us harder work than we were supposed to do to make us discover new things by ourselves. I really enjoyed it and I knew that I wanted to continue chemistry after high school. For management, it is different; I have always wanted to do it. It is frequent in my family to discuss at dinners about current topics on the economical and political situation on the world. It helped me to develop my interest for any issues linked to the world's situation. Moreover, last year we had a project to do in team of three (we chose to talk about asbestos) and I really enjoyed leading this team in order to make us succeed in working together. I think I have the required abilities to adapt to a British university and contribute to its life by my personals qualities. I have two main characteristics, which are an open-mind, and a taste for discovering new things. I lived one year in Dublin (in 2011-2012) for my 11th year. I studied at the French School and I......
