What I Learned About Myself And The Stereotypes Of Swimming

I started swimming class begrudgingly. I was excited to swim and improve my technique, but I wasn’t pleased about the hassle it would be to swim twice a week and go to other classes with wet hair. However, in Ms. Meissner’s swimming course I learned more than I ever thought I would about myself, my capabilities, and the stereotypes of black people and swimming. As a child I never really thought about swimming as something that I couldn't do. My parents put me in lessons pretty young, and I was never a great swimmer, but I had a little bit of an understanding of what swimming was. I felt that I could probably survive if I was in danger. I did hear talk about black women. I heard that black women weren’t the greatest swimmers because we were

...Rhetoric 5 It’s just the way things are: Images and impressions tend to sell more products than good arguments do. At least some of the images are fun. Common Devices and Techniques W hen the military uses the phrase “self-injurious behavior incidents” regarding detainees at Guantánamo Bay, it means what most of us call “attempted suicides.” In fact, when the word “detainees” is used, it means what most of us call “prisoners.” “Waterboarding” sounds at first like something you’d expect to see young people doing on a California beach, not a torture technique that involves forced simulated drowning. Less remarkable, perhaps, but possibly more relevant for most of us, we’ve heard the term “downsized” used when someone is fired or laid off. “Ethnic cleansing” covers everything from deportation to genocide. What we have to say may be important, but the words we choose to say it with can be equally important. The examples just given are cases of a certain type of linguistic coercion—an attempt to get us to adopt a particular attitude toward a subject that, if described differently, would seem less attractive to us. Words have tremendous persuasive power, or what we have called their rhetorical force or emotive meaning—their power to express and elicit images, feelings, and emotional associations. In the next few chapters, we examine some of the most common rhetorical techniques used to affect people’s attitudes, opinions, and behavior. Rhetoric refers to the study of persuasive...

...Chapter 1 (1) Instead of an individual’s status or title, it is his/ her Leadership Point of View (LPV) that determines a leader; furthermore, it will be too late for people to start building their LPV after they sit in leadership positions; (2) Different from points of view (POV) of a follower, a bureaucrat, an administer or a contrarian, the LPV requests an individual to be capable to see what needs to be done, to understand all the underlying forces at play in a situation, and to have the courage to initiate action to make things better; (3) To develop the leadership, the first thing that needs to be done is in yourself (“managing energy in yourself” or “self-leadership”). By constant studies, practices and active learning, people can obtain the capability to tell strategic stories; they can also attempt to overcome the fear of rejection (FoR) through balancing listening to others’ opinions and being confident of their owns. These points are recognized important due to the following notions. First, it breaks the stereotype that people’s views reply on their positions and manifests the possibility and necessity for juniors to build up their own LPV. Second, it offers critical procedures and guidelines on how to facilitate with the LPV for achieving effective leaderships. Moreover, it emphasizes the significance of self-leadership prior to motivating others. Comparing with motivating other, self-leadership, characterized by active study and self-cautious, is a more fundamental...

Binge Eating

...To me, compulsive overeating is a disease where a person has no control over their food intake. It's a constant eating, a wanting for a more and more. You can't get enough, sort of like a junkie looking for the next high. That is my relationship with food. And I have no control. People that suffer from Compulsive Overeating have what can be labeled not only as an eating disorder, but also as an addiction and even more so as an illness. There are many reasons why people become addicted to food, many using eating as a way to cope with problems or stress in their lives. Eating can also help them conceal their emotions, to fill the emptiness that they feel inside. Food is used as a narcotic to not deal with their feelings or emotions. The tendency for people with this eating disorder is overweight because of the abnormal eating habits. People that do not suffer from the epidemic can and won’t empathize with the victims because of the common stereotypes, stereotype such as greed, gluttony or lack of disciple. Simple suggestions to a sufferer such as “Just slow down or go on a diet” are equally insulting as telling a person suffering from Anorexia to “eat something”. Not only are the words hurtful, but this disorder will negatively bleed into the body and causes health risks. A sufferer with this Compulsive Overeating disorder is prone to high blood-pressure and cholesterol, can develop kidney disease or kidney failure, arthritis, deterioration of the bones, strokes, heart attacks,...

Studying the Bible to Teach the Bible

...Rightly Divided: Studying the Bible to Teach the Bible I. Romans 8: 1-17. “1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in sinful man, 4 in order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the sinful nature but according to the Spirit. 5 Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. 6 The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; 7 the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so. Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God. 9 You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. 10 But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness. 11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ...

...Chapter 1The Son of Morningstar“Gina’s goin’ to ground me again.” I complained. Mike and I were out flying over town again. The Fallen had forbid me from socializing with Mike and forbid me from flying. Right now I’m breaking both rules and my Aunt Gina is going to murder me. But she hasn’t flown in years and can’t remember the sweet tranquility and since of freedom and pure joy you get from flying. It’s just too much for me to give upIt was well past one in the morning and Mike and I were out downtown again. We missed the Light Rail. Again. “No, Mike that's not the point, I don't care about groundings. The point is it's your fault but when you get me home she's going to melt and say, 'Thank you Michael for bringing my irresponsible nephew home,” I smirked, “I'm half tempted to tell her exactly how angelic you are.” He gave me a horrified look, “Luke, come on.” I laughed at my friend knowing I would never do such a thing. Mike's reaction was understandable. Mike was son of Michael the Archangel. I am Lucian Morningstar, son of the devil. Right now he's committing treason against his father and heaven. The penalty for treason is getting cast out of heaven depending on severity of the crime they could go as far as casting you here to earth as an immortal human bound in the weak (in our terms the human is the weakest form of life) human body the shock of it could send you spiraling into a coma and you will be a immortal vegetable. ...INTRODUCTION In this report I aim to communicate effectively with others and transmit care values during an interaction; however for my group activity my aim is also to effectively work as a team to succeed in building a snowman and my one-to-one interaction is to cheer up an elderly client. I will then explain what I did successfully, how I managed to remove any potential barriers and relate this to other work settings. I will also evaluate how I could improve my communication for next time. My report consist of two interactions; one with an elderly woman in a Care Home named Jean, and another with a group of 5 young children at a day care Nursery. For each interaction I have separately analysed my communication skills. To ensure I promoted all care values, with parental permission from the Nursery children, I can refer to them by their first name only to keep confidentiality in this report. I have changed Jean’s name to also acknowledge her wishes to be kept confidential. METHOD I collected the primary evidence for my interaction through taking part in a one to one interaction with an elderly woman who lived in a care home and a group interview of 5 children aged between 4 and 5 in a private Nursery. To take part in these interactions I had to gather my evidence independently and using my initiative. My interactions were organised through work experience placements I did. My aim’s of the interactions were to communicate effectively with others and transmit care values...

...HAS passed since this book was first published. As I mention in the original introduction, the opportunity to write the book came while I was in law school, the result of my election as the first African-American president of the Harvard Law Review. In the wake of some modest publicity, I received an advance from a publisher and went to work with the belief that the story of my family, and my efforts to understand that story, might speak in some way to the fissures of race that have characterized the American experience, as well as the fluid state of identitythe leaps through time, the collision of cultures-that mark our modern life. Like most first-time authors, I was filled with hope and despair upon the book’s publication-hope that the book might succeed beyond my youthful dreams, despair that I had failed to say anything worth saying. The reality fell somewhere in between. The reviews were mildly favorable. People actually showed up at the readings my publisher arranged. The sales were underwhelming. And, after a few months, I went on with the business of my life, certain that my career as an author would be short-lived, but glad to have survived the process with my dignity more or less intact. I had little time for reflection over the next ten years. I ran a voter registration project in the 1992 election cycle, began a civil rights practice, and started teaching constitutional law at the University of Chicago. My wife and I bought a house, were blessed with two gorgeous, healthy...
