What is hero? What attributes must someone have in order to be considered a hero? A hero is anyone who goes out of their way to help someone and puts those people's safety above theirs. Maya can be considered a hero because she risked her life for people, the quest to find her mom wasn't an easy one and she kept toll on her emotions when her pass resurfaced. The first and most important person that Maya put before herself is her adopted Mom, Pam. After Pam was kidnapped Maya realized that enough wasn't been done to rescue Pam so she set off on her own journey to rescue Pam. She knew that she was risking her safety but she was still determine to rescue Pam. "I have to do something, I can’t just lie here. If Simon isn’t going to Leeds then I’ll go there myself. "(54) Even though Maya knew that the moment she left the house, she was putting her and her mom's life in jeopardy she was still determined to get to Pam. Lubna was another person that Maya risked her life for. At first Lubna and Maya's relationship was perfectly fine because Lubna helped to free Maya after Omar locked her up in the basement. "Her wounds seem to be getting worse by the minute. She has already lost so much blood. I have to help her". (125) Even though Maya knew that Lubna had been working against her, she was still determine to do anything to save her life after she was shot. She believed that Lubna was brainwashed and wasn't in her own mind, therefore she Maya didn't blame her for anything that she did. Khaled is another important person that Maya would risk her life for in a heartbeat. When the book started their relationship was really rocky because Maya didn't completely trust Khaled. "We have to get him to a hospital as soon as possible. I can’t lose someone else that’s important to me". (285) Maya was willing to risk her and her mom's life just to get Khaled to the doctor. She
