Back to School

...Back to school Obama starts by establishing a contact between him and the audience. He does this by telling the children of the schools that he knows it might be preferable for them to stay home under the bed sheets instead of getting up early for school. He also expresses his understanding for anyone nervous about going to a new school or a new part of school. Then he tells a short anecdote about his mother getting him up at 4:30 in the morning to be home schooled in Indonesia. Obama tells the children that he did not like getting up early either. He does this to make them understand that even the president himself did not love getting up early for school in his youth. The little story also works as an icebreaker with the punch line of the joke coming in the end, when Obama says he had to get up at 4:30. Having established a contact and gained some trust through his intro, Obama goes to a more serious tone in his speech. This is obvious when he says: “But I’m here today because I have something important to discuss with you. I’m here because I want to talk with you about your education and what’s expected of all of you in this new school year.” He starts out by assuring the students that he does everything in his power as the president to give them the best conditions in their schools. This brings him to the core of his speech; the responsibility of the students. Responsibility is a word he brings up several times throughout the speech from that point. Obama brings up the...

...Celebrities endorsing the luxury brand ‘Omega’ 2 Introduction The billions of dollars spent per year on celebrity endorsement contracts show that celebrities, like Liz Hurley, Britney Spears and Tiger Woods, play an important role for the advertising industry (Daneshvary and Schwer 2000, Kambitsis et al. 2002). Female athlete Venus Williams, tennis player and Wimbledon championship winner in 2002, for example, has signed a five-year $40 million contract with sportswear manufacturer Reebok International Inc.1 Theory and practice prove that the use of super stars in advertising generates a lot of publicity and attention from the public (Ohanian 1991). The underlying question is, if and how the lively interest of the public in ‘the rich and famous’ can be effectively used by companies to promote their brands and consequently increase revenues. As a first step to answer this question, this paper will examine the relationship between celebrity endorsements and brands, by applying a selection of widely accepted principles of how consumers’ brand attitudes and preferences can be positively influenced. Thereby the...

Mastercard

...VIDEO CASE 7 MASTERCARD: GOING UPSCALE Check, cash, or credit card? How many times have you heard that question and replied “credit card” without even thinking about it? When you do think about it, however, credit cards are a relatively new phenomenon. Yet when it comes time to pay, it seems we’re more likely to use the credit card (and to have several of them) than checks or cash. Indeed, some writers have even suggested that, in the not so distant future, we will all operate with “plastic money” all the time. MasterCard had its beginnings in 1966, when a group of banks joined together to form the Interbank Card Association (ICA). The ICA was founded by an association of banks rather than by a single dominant bank. Member committees ran the association by establishing rules for authorization, clearing, and settlement as well as marketing, security, and legal matters. In 1968, ICA went “global” by forming an association with Banco Nacional in Mexico and later with Eurocard in Europe. Since then, MasterCard has expanded around the world—even into the communist world of the 1980s when it entered the People’s Republic of China in 1987 and Russia in 1988. By 1993, China was the second largest country in terms of MasterCard sales volume. Today, MasterCard is affiliated with more than 23,000 financial institutions around the world and has nearly 370 million credit and debit cards in use . These cards are accepted at more than 13 million locations worldwide. Gross...

...SWOT is a tool that identifies the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of an organization. SWOT analysis also refers to the process through which decision makers develop their awareness of organizational environments so as to influence performance now and in the future (Naryanan & Nath, 1993: 197). Specifically, SWOT is a basic, straightforward model that assesses what an organization can and cannot do as well as its potential opportunities and threats. The method of SWOT analysis is to take the information from an environmental analysis and separate it into internal (strengths and weaknesses) and external issues (opportunities and threats). Once this is completed, SWOT analysis determines what may assist the firm in accomplishing its objectives, and what obstacles must be overcome or minimized to achieve desired results. According to Investopedia, when using SWOT analysis, be realistic about the strengths and weaknesses of your organization. Distinguish between where your organization is today, and where it could be in the future. Also remember to be specific by avoiding gray areas and always analyze whether the company is better or worse than competition. Finally, keep your SWOT analysis short and simple, and avoid complexity and over-analysis since much of the information is subjective. Thus, use it as a guide and not a prescription.  This paper seeks to evaluate the strategic implications of the SWOT analysis model of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority...

...SUNYIT Human Resource Management MGT 318 Professor N. Laino Leadership Jeff Albright April 30, 2014 In the waning seconds of Game 6 during the 1998 NBA Finals, Michael Jordan found himself with the ball after stealing it from Karl Malone. Down by one, and with just 5.2 seconds left on the clock, Jordan rose up for a jumper that would end up being the winning points of the game. This win would earn Michael Jordan his sixth NBA championship. With every successful championship win, there is a leader who helped lead the franchise. Just as experienced leadership translates to success on the playing field, experienced leadership is essential in the business world. Leadership is defined as “the use of power and influence to direct the activities of followers toward goal achievement. That direction can affect followers’ interpretation of events, the organization of their work activities, their commitment to key goals, their relationship with other followers, and their access to cooperation and support from other work units” (McGraw 418). Often times, people who are leaders are people of power; it’s how these leaders use their power to get followers to achieve goals. Someone who is powerful is often known for their ability to influence the behavior of others. In the workforce, most leaders are managers. There are three organizational forms of power that managers can use to influence employees: legitimate power, reward power, and coercive power. Legitimate power...

...Course Description This course introduces the concepts, tools, and first principles of strategy formulation and competitive analysis. It is concerned with managerial decisions and actions that materially affect the success and survival of business enterprises. The course focuses on the information, analyses, organizational processes, skills, and business judgment managers must use to design strategies, position their businesses and assets, and define firm boundaries, to maximize long-term profits in the face of uncertainty and competition. Strategic Management (BUAD 497) is an integrative and interdisciplinary course in two important respects: 1. The course assumes a broad view of the environment that includes competitors, buyers/consumers, suppliers, technology, economics, capital markets, and government both locally and globally. It assumes that the external environment is dynamic and characterized by uncertain changes. In studying strategy, this course draws together and builds on all the ideas, concepts, and theories from your functional courses such as Accounting, Economics, Finance, Marketing, Organizational Behavior, and Statistics. However, it is much more than a mere integration of the functional specialties within a firm. 2. The course takes a general management perspective. It views the firm as a whole, and examines how policies in each functional area are integrated into an overall competitive strategy. We designed this course to develop...

His complexion is ruddy, his lips cracked from working out or working hard, or both. He's casually dressed, but with a typical Nike sharpness to his turtleneck and slacks, a sharpness reflected also in his urgent, aggressive defence of his company - a Nike pride that would seem arrogant were not the company so dominant in its industry. Wolfram calls the i2 problem - a software glitch that cost Nike more than $US100 million in lost sales, depressed its stock price by 20 percent, triggered a flurry of class-action lawsuits, and caused its chairman, president and CEO, Phil Knight, to lament famously: "This is what you get for $US400 million, huh?" - a "speed bump". No single artist – indeed, no movement or force – has eclipsed what Michael Jackson accomplished in the first years of his adult solo career. Jackson changed the balance in the pop world in a way that nobody has since. He forced rock & roll and the mainstream press to acknowledge that the biggest pop star in the world could be young and black, and in doing so he broke down more barriers than anybody. But he is also among the best proofs in living memory of poet William Carlos Williams' famous verse: "The pure products of America/go crazy." When Jackson died on June 25th, 2009, of apparent cardiac arrest...
