The Crucible by Arthur Miller, is a play based on the Salem witch trials. The Salem witch trials started in the spring of 1692 in Salem, Massachusetts. A group of young girls were in the woods and dancing with a slave named Tituba. They get caught by Reverend Parris and instead of confessing they start blaming other women of witchcraft. Later that day, Parris’ daughter, betty, falls into a coma. They tried to figure out who was a witch and who was dealing with the devil. The red scare is similar to the crucible. McCarthyism was a witch hunt because they went and asked people who were communists and who was part of it. Mob mentality and Mass hysteria have a great role in the crucible and in the Second red scare as everyone is influenced by the

...is in the Crucible, somebody would accuse somebody else of being a “witch” and the accused person denied of being a witch and then that person would lose his land and die in the same process such as john proctor. The red scare was a time period when fear of communism was spreading around and was getting more and more people of communism. Communism is the same as being called a “witch” according to the Crucible. The United States was involved in the whole red scare time period because i think that the red scare started somewhere in the United States. It affected people in america because people were being accused of being a communist and if they didn’t admit to being a communist, the people would be killed i think probably by being hung up. Arthur Miller’s play “The Crucible” is similar to the Red Scare/ McCarthyism because the whole situation was based on who was being accused of being what and in the Crucibles case, people were being accused of being witches and in the red scare act thing they were being accused of being communist. It is also similar because if you did not confess to being a “witch” or a “communist”, then they would take away your property and kill you. The difference between them that i noticed through the play was that there was an affair involved well at least the ages were different but that’s what i noticed. ...The theme of oppression is constant throughout both The Handmaid’s Tale and The Crucible. Both show how religion can be twisted into a form of control in society and they show the huge detrimental and devastating effects this control can have. Arthur Miller’s The Crucible shows the horror and appalling nature of the Salem witch trials of 1692, but beneath this surface it shows the parallels to aspects in Miller’s own life at this period, with the idea of McCarthyism going out of control in America. McCarthyism was a result of the second red scare in America in the late 1940´s/1950’s. It was a fear driven movement that swept across the United States where the threat of a Communist world revolution seemed like a very real threat. In response to this branches of the government set up organisations such as HUAC (The House Un-American Activities Committee) to help fight Communism from infiltrating the state. Unfortunately in the end it simply led to a ´witch hunt´ in which people were brought to trial and accused of being communist, Miller amongst them. HUAC and McCarthyism were simply examples of how when those in power feel threatened they will do anything to maintain their position which is what Miller set out to show in The Crucible. At least four, however, concern themselves with evolutionary themes and ideas: Man and Superman, Back to Methusalah, The Simpleton of the Unexpected Isles, and Far-fetched Fables. In Man and Superman, especially the third act, the preface, and The Revolutionist's Handbook and Pocket Companion, Shaw touches on two main themes: the pursuit of man by woman and the direction of evolution, which Shaw sees as leading towards the development of the mind and brain. In Back to Methusalah, Shaw carries forward his vision of evolution as proceeding in the direction of mental development but introduces a seemingly new idea in the last play of the cycle, the antithesis of mind and body.
