Visiting the Rice Center was a great experience and chance to explore all that VCU environmental science has to offer. Even though I took this class to fulfill my science requirement, I thoroughly enjoy learning about the different systems we have on Earth and how we as students can apply and observe what we learn in class. I was first of all quite impressed with the facility and the amount of land (350 acres) that was gifted to VCU. Being one of the first buildings in Virginia to be classified, as LEED Platinum proof is very exciting. Lots of work went in to making this a green building. Being a design student, I appreciate the relationship between nature and architecture while maintaining a pleasing design aesthetic. This building uses geothermal energy, which provides efficient heating and cooling while promoting sustainable energy use. What I found most interesting was the amount of natural light the building is able to use during the day. Looking up at the ceiling of the two classrooms you were able to view the sky that is used instead of florescent lights.
Water as everyone knows is most important, especially for the Rice Center. Even rainwater has a purpose, which is to be used to flush the toilets. More importantly, the vast amount of water around the center serves a purpose of learning and exploring. Because the Rice Center is located on the James River, there is easy access to boats and canoes. While I wish I was better dressed and up for the challenge, many of my fellow classmates were able to go canoeing. Nevertheless I got a chance to see up close what it is like to shock a fish in the water. One of the TA leaders, Sam, was able to show us how to shock fish with a pole and a battery charged backpack. Basically the fish is stunned and floats to the surface. This is when they can be collected in fishnets and transferred into a bucket of water. This is a safe method that allows us to easily identify what we are looking at through its size and shape as well as seeing its overall health.
The Rice Center is a beautiful place. If it weren’t so cold, I would have stayed all day. I think what made this trip a huge success was the amount of participants that came on a Saturday morning. I also was very impressed with Dr. Crawford’s knowledge and enthusiasm. He was quite enthusiastic about the sturgeon fishes and research involved. To be able to reproduce, sturgeons need to be around 20-30 years old. That is a long time. They also can grow to be very long. We now are able to track were the sturgeon exactly are within the James River. This allows us to see what time of the year they are coming up.

What Do People Gain to Much Weight?

...October 26, 2015 Why Do People Gain Too Much Weight? Why, even when many people try to imitate the perfect figures of stars on televisions shows, is most of people still overweight? This physical problem which affects children, teenagers and adults instead of decreasing is increasing year by year. I have been living in the United States (US) for three years and I have noticed a lot of fat people. Because I had not seen many fat people in my native country, Cuba, I want to know what causes Americans become overweight. Some of the most important reasons I found doing my search which contribute to why people gain much weight are: stress, drinking alcohol and not exercising. Stress -the way the body responds to any kind of demand or situations- leads people to eat more than they usually do. First, scientists have demonstrated that stress is related to lifestyle. It is not a secret that daily life moves quickly, as a consequence, people tend to have bad eating habits. In my personal experience as a student of Houston Community College (HCC), and an employee I have been affected by this problem, too. I usually do not have much free time, so I eat junk food for breakfast and lunch which has caused me to gain weight. Financial problem is another reason which causes stress and is related to lifestyle. Currently, the global economy is unstable, that means the economy is going down or up surprisingly. Many people waste money on things that they do not really need, as a result...

Fedex Ceo Fred Smith on ... Everything

...shouldn't pay for a liberal arts education. By Brian Dumaine, senior editor-at-large Fred Smith sees fast growth ahead in the developing world. Fred Smith sees fast growth ahead in the developing world. FORTUNE -- When Fred Smith founded FedEx in 1971, he had just returned from the Vietnam War, where he had served as a Marine platoon leader and then a pilot, and he was casting around for something to do. As legend has it, a paper he had written at Yale -- he doesn't remember the grade but is pretty sure it wasn't a good one -- laid out the idea for a hub-and-spoke system for delivering time-sensitive items like computer parts. He borrowed money from his sisters, leased some jets, and started his service. Today FedEx (No. 70 on the Fortune 500), with headquarters in Memphis, has 255,000 employees, 688 planes, and more than 90,000 vehicles that operate in some 220 countries and regions. Here's the world according to Fred Smith. Edited excerpts: Q: In 2000 you started morphing from your traditional air express delivery business into ground and into freight. What was the thinking behind that strategy shift? A: Well, in 2000 we were probably competing in a $50 billion annual [sales] market space. Today we're directly competing in about a $350 billion to $400 billion marketplace. Going into ground and freight opened up a market for us with the greatest growth potential over a sustained period of time: the developing world. Middle classes are emerging in various countries...

Glancing vs Staring

...committed adultery with her in his heart (Matthew 5:27-28). So while your husband is likely being honest when he says he has no intention of doing anything beyond looking, the act of looking can still be a problem, especially if he is replaying it in his mind later. Not only that, but in his situation he is not even trying to be discreet about it when you’re around, and that is cause for concern. If he freely looks when you are with him, how bold is he when you are not present? 1) Whenever we go anywhere, could be a reception, stores, etc ( basicly anywhere there are other people) he looks/stare at girls/women.. I have been married for 8 years and been talking to him about this ever since. I have asked him several times not to do it, that it bothers me. He says he likes to look, that everyone is different. The next time I caught him staring, I told him you can stare all you want when I am not there, just don't do it infront of me, .. I sometime ignore him but not all the time... it really hurts me.. For eg. we were doing grocery shopping the other day when he saw this girl and he looked/stare at her, its like she had a magnet on her body.. He couldn't help looking.. He is looking at the girl then he saw me looking at him, he then turned away, then looked in the direction she went in... I just walked out the store. Please let me know how to handle this, he says all men look.. I said they look but you stare.. ahh! this is making upset 2) It`s really a shame that one of these...

I Want You...

...“I WANT YOU FOR THE U.S. ARMY!” Now, what would you do if someone were to ask you this? Or if you seen it out in town on a poster? Would you pay any attention to it or just walk on by? Most people would honestly just walk on by, unless, there was something in that particular poster that had caught their attention. Recruiting ads have changed over the years, but this one was popular. This particular recruiting advertisement was an effective argument because of their slogan, Uncle Sam, his stare, his point, and the use of America’s colors; red, white, and blue. I would say this particular recruiting image was for men or boys. Back then it were only the men or boys who could actually join the army. So, this poster excluded any women and girls because they were not allowed to join. The main targeted audience for this was for the younger men and boys, and for more than one reason. The younger they are, the more apt they are to be healthier. The army wants them to be younger because they can move more quickly and act upon things faster than someone who is older. They also want the men who don’t already have a family started because then they won’t have that worry while out in battle and can focus better on what they need to do. Where is the place where you see most advertisements for things? Out in town, right? This image was more than likely posted out in town on public buildings as well, that is where most of a town’s population goes for many different reasons. Having it out where...

Submission Date: OCT 29 , 2014 Presentation Date: OCT 29, 2014 * SELECT ONE CASE STUDY ONLY CASE: 1.0 Web Porn at Work Al Smetana is the founding president of a medium-size, Midwestern manufacturing firm, Rayburn Unlimited. He’s proud of the way his company has grown, and done so on the basis of an organizational culture committed to honesty, integrity and the intrinsic value of each individual. But now those values are being put to the test. It began when Al Smetana learned that an employee had tapped into the company’s computer system and figured out how to read people’s e-mail and to learn what websites they visited. Determining who the culprit was wasn’t difficult. When confronted about it, the employee admitted what he had done. Al Smetana immediately terminated his employment. But as he left, the employee said angrily, “Just ask Lindley about his computer usage,” referring to Craig Lindley, associate vice president for human resources and an old friend of Al Smetana’s. Although Al Smetana did not trust the discharged employee, he was disturbed by his comment and reluctant to let it go. So he called Craig Lindley into his office and asked him about it. After a few minutes of gentle questioning, Craig started weeping. When he recovered himself, he explained that for the past year or so he had been hooked on pornography on the web and at the office sometimes spent an hour or so a day looking...

Honesty

...Merriam-Webster the definition of honesty is: 1. The quality or fact of being honest; uprightness and fairness. 2. Truthfulness, sincerity or frankness. 3. Freedom from deceit or fraud. The commitment required to realize these simple terms is more clearly implied in a second definition, drawn from Funk & Wagnails Standard Handbook of Synonyms, Antonyms and Prepositions: "One who is honest in the highest and fullest sense is scrupulously careful ^o adhere to all known truth and right even in thought." So how can you tell when something is true or not? According to Miller (2001), she states to let a story go by that is too fanciful to be real. More than likely, everyone knows it is not true, and you can all smile about it and maybe even joke about what a great story it is,...

Mama's Story "Ramota"

...Mama’s Story Ramota 9/28/2010 J.E.N.P’s & Co. Printing Press J’baby Twenty five years ago, my mother gave me a word and told me a story that changed my life. “Maureen, I know that you are only but a child, but what I have to say to you this today will give a new live to your life, if only you follow it to the latter. Moreover, I will tell you a story admits what I have to say to you.” My mother said to me. “Mum, I hope all is well?” as tender as I was I asked my mother but she gave no answer other than that I should pay attention to what she has to say; so I shrugged. “In this life,” she said “whatever anyone is destined for must surely come to be, regardless of the person’s background, environ, or status. If it so pleases the person, he can run to the stars above or the seas below, what will be, will be.” Being the child that I was, I didn’t understand, neither did I read too much meaning to the words she said. “My child, you can now retire to your room. I will call on you when am ready.” And so I headed for my room, but on touching my bed, I continued with the game I was playing before mother called on me. I played some little more before I fell asleep. Later that evening, amidst my dream I heard the sound of my name. It sounded so loud as if the person was standing next to me that I sprang out of bed. Behold it was my mother; she was standing at the entrance of my room. She turned and walked away. I followed her lead and we ended our walk sitting by the dinning...

...Margaret Mead said “Always remember that you are absolutely unique. Just like everyone else (Mead).” As Westerners, we know that we are free to do as we choose and we sincerely do not like when someone tells us otherwise. What happens when we are faced with a situation where a group is telling us that what we know to be correct is, in fact, incorrect? As much as we believe that we are a free and independent people, British author Doris Lessing’s speech tells a different story. Lessing states that we “are now in possession of a great deal of hard information about ourselves, but we do not use it to improve our institutions and therefore our lives (Lessing).” Lessing spoke in 1985 about Western humans and how we perceive ourselves. She believes that Westerners are very educated and have a very high sense of self. Westerners go through life rarely questioning what others tell us, instead just accepting it as absolute truth. Americans especially are very prone to social pressures and feel significant pressure to conform. In the age of Facebook and Twitter, many adolescents feel an enormous amount of pressure from friends and social media about what they should look like, what they should be wearing, what music they should be listening to. Adults are no exception. Adults are pressured all through their lives that they should go to college, get married, and have children. Even if this is not something an individual wishes...
