When God Was A Woman by Merlin Stone

In “When God Was a Woman” written by Merlin Stone there are arguments presented that could change one’s beliefs about whether or not God was a female at first. The first theory presented referred to the story about Adam and Eve. It is believed that since Eve disobeyed God and ate the forbidden fruit, he punished women by making them less superior to men. Stone also presented strong evidence such as sculptures of women found in the Gravettian-Aurignacian cultures as late as 25,000 BC to argue that God was a woman. Statues made out of stone, bone, and clay were discovered as Venus sculptures that people worshiped. With the evidence Stone presented, I think God could have been a woman and over time the religious perspective has changed the way woman have been treated.
Religion and historical findings work together to collectively assume that God was once a woman. According to the Bible, “in prehistoric and early historic periods of human development, religions existed in which people revered their supreme creator as female”(xii). People practice many different religions and contribute largely in the way people live there lives. When growing up individual’s views are instilled in them by their parents where they are taught to worship a certain God. Growing up the Ten Commandments were an essential in the Catholic religion. The Hebrews believed in a light blazing, also known as the God on a mountaintop. I am the Lord thy God thou shalt not have other gods. This first commandant clearly states that this religion is the one and true religion, which is of course a similar theme in many other books of religious belief. From this point on conflict will be raised amongst different religious parties, which sprung an uncertainty about which sex should be the supreme. Stone suggests the idea that religion and history were

Why Men Needs Vision and Dream

...key to Gods strategy for ruling earth from heaven is the male man. 2) God’s original purpose is to extend his Heavenly kingdom to Earth. He wanted to colonize earth with heaven; he wanted to extend his invisible kingdom to this visible earth. 3) God’s goal was to fill the earth with the culture of heaven. When a kingdom colonizes a territory, it fills the territory with its culture. 4) One of the great mistakes of the church is it has reversed God’s program. It preoccupies people to leave earth, when in fact the instruction was to occupy till He comes. 5) Man was never created to dominate other men, but to dominate earth. You and I were created to dominate the resources of earth in the area of gifting. God gave all of us dominion, not over people, not even over your wife. 6) Discovery of your purpose is the source of your personal leadership. Leadership has to do with self discovery than it has to do with leading people. True leaders never seek followers, followers are attracted to the gift of the leader. 7) Vision is a preview of your purpose. 8) Man is spirit and spirits have no gender. You’ll never find in the Bible a reference to a male/female spirit. God took the first man, and put him in a body, and the first body God made was a male. Man comes in two models: male and female. 9) God only made only 1-human from the soil and he never went back. Not even women came from the soil. Out of the male body God pulled out a woman. God gave the woman the instruction...

Pandora

...first woman, but the woman was created for different reasons. The story of Pandora is about the betrayal of a titan, named Prometheus, who stole fire from Zeus and the gods and gave it to man. As a punishment, a woman was created to bring misfortunes to mankind. In the story of Eve, a woman was created by God as a companion for man, but she also brought misfortunes to man. Although both stories are about the creation of the first woman and how their disobedience is the source of despair for mankind, the story of Eve has a more positive view of women. In the Greek myth of Pandora, the creation of the first woman was ordered by Zeus as a gift to punish man for stealing fire. Zeus ordered the other gods to create Pandora. She was given several traits by different gods such as beauty, musical talents, healing, manual dexterity, and gardening. Pandora was lovable, talented and was the ideal female. In addition, Pandora was also given a box and told never to open it. Yet, given the traits of foolishness and curiosity, she opened the box and released the misfortunes that afflict mankind. In the story of Eve, the creation of the first woman was by God, who decided that Adam should not be alone : “It is not good that the man should be alone. I shall make him a helper meet for him” Gen Ch2; 18. Therefore, God caused a deep sleep on Adam and He took one of his ribs and created Eve as his companion. So, a woman in the story of Pandora was created by gods for punishment, but a woman in the...

Depiction of Women

...they react to this treatment. It will also discuss various situations that strengthen this argument. In the Tanakh, when God created man, God took a look at man and decided that he needed someone to help him. God did not create woman to be his equal, but God created her to be his helper. In Genesis 2, the Tanakh somewhat puts women in the same category with the animals, but one step higher due to the fact that she was made from man. When Adam and Eve were in the Garden of Eden, they had free reign to go where they wanted, eat what they chose, do what they wished… anything except eat from the tree of knowledge. It was Eve who initially bent the rules and ate from the tree of life. She showed reckless abandon for the rules that were set by the ruling power (just happens to be God in this case) and chose to do what she wanted because she “felt” like doing it. The general feeling in both the Tanakh and Antigone is that women act more on their feelings and do whatever they do and face the consequences later. They realize that they have the same set of rules that men have, yet they can’t control their emotions enough not to break them. They are not above the law, but merely that they act more on emotion than men do. When Antigone lost her brother, she knew that there was a law that he was not to be buried. Yet she felt that he needed to be buried and that she was going to do it. Antigone could have gone to Creon and requested special permission due to the family ties, but she chose...

Proverbs 31 Woman

...normal assumption of the Proverbs 31 woman is a woman who is perfect. A woman who has her whole life put together, is simply astonishing in every way, and is surprisingly a woman that many Christian women dread to read about. What makes this woman so significant is not that she knows how to cook, clean, care for her children, and work hard, it is her wisdom that shines through and her fear of the Lord that makes her a woman of virtue. Other people have speculations of the Proverbs 31 woman; being too feministic, figuratively speaking on what a woman should and should not be, and trying to create a cookie cutter woman that is seen as perfect. Proverbs 31 is a great chapter, yet why do so many hate on it? Most people know about the Proverbs 31 woman, but most people actually don’t know the real story of the man behind this. The content of this chapter was written by a mother to her son, King Lamuel, who most people believe to be King Samuel. So if it was King Samuel than that means that the mother was Bathsheba, also the wife of King David. Proverbs 31 was actually meant for men, not necessarily women. It’s the man’s responsibility to find this woman who is rare to find because she is a jewel among many stones that symbolize the worldly women. Proverbs 31 was meant to be memorized for Jewish men. Yet many Christian women seem to cringe when reading Proverbs 31 because of the feeling of inadequacy. Some even speculate and wonder if this woman actually exists, or if it’s some kind...

And just as the book earned widespread notoriety and scathing critiques nearly a decade ago, the film is garnering its own praise and condemnation. At issue is Young’s characterization of the Holy Trinity, seen through the eyes of the story’s main character, who on the four-year anniversary of his daughter’s brutal killing is mysteriously invited by someone named “Papa” — his wife’s affectionate name for God — to the abandoned shack in the Oregon woods where the girl died. He goes, reluctant and angry, unsure...

Women's Role in the Church

...Samuel Gibson 4/19/2012 Theology 202 Short Essay 3 The Role of Women in the Church As I was talking to my friend Mary and see how passionate that she wants to be in the ministry in her church and I see that she has a lot of questions be for she commits. When you look at the “elders” and “deacons” in the church they have different jobs. As researching ‘elders” I came across a great article on Questions?org it takes about the duties of an elder in the church. The bible talks about at lest five duties and obligations of the elder. They stated on Questions?org “ The elders help to settle disputes in the church”. While Paul and Barnabas were at Antioch of Syria, some men from Judea arrived and began to teach the Christians ‘unless you keep the ancient Jewish custom of circumcision taught by Moses, you cannot be saved.’ Paul and Barnabas, disagreeing with them, argued forcefully and at length. Finally, Paul and Barnabas were sent to Jerusalem, accompanished by some local believers, to talk to the apostles and elders about this question” (Acts 15:1 - 2,NLT).(gotQuestions?org, 2012). You can see that the elders make decisions in the church. The are right after the Pastors when it comes to making decisions in the church. The elders are senior advisors are ahead of everyone and right behind the pastor, and assistant pastor. The have a lot of power in the church and are very respected by the congregation. Whenever a conflict arises and the pastor and assistant pastor is not available...

Essay On Gender Roles In Greek Myth

...God created the heavens and the earth (Gen. 2:1, ESV). The Lord God created man out of the dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life (Gen. 2:7). In Eden, the Lord God planted a garden and every tree that is good for food and pleasant to the sight (Gen. 2:8-9). God formed a woman from Adam’s rib (Gen. 2:21-22). Proverbs 3:5-7 instructs man to trust in the Lord with all his heart, and do not lean unto his own understanding. In addition, in all his ways man should acknowledge God and He will direct a man’s path. After all, God created man and woman therefore both genders can trust in the God of their creation. Life's Distractions

...ourselves in predicaments that we know that are not pleasing to God. The Holy Spirit cautions us, but we allow the distractions, our flesh, to bind us up. Then, we ask ourselves, in frustration, 1. How did I get into this mess? 2. What happened to my better judgment? 3. Why did it happen to me? And……. 4. How can I get out? I thank God for a merciful God—a God of love and forgiveness! He always comes through, in spite of ourselves. Let’s look at some biblical distractions that caused an uproar, but God stepped in to fix that which was broken. I. EVE, the first Woman on Earth Eve appeared as a complete, perfect woman. She was never a child, or a daughter or a maiden. She was created out of man. She was the first and only woman to have no inherited sin, for she formed by the hand of Almighty God. Created by a perfect God, Eve reflected the divine perfection. Adam’s first reaction to her signifies her loveliness, her beauty, her whole aura. It was Adam that gave the first love poem to a woman. When he looked upon her, he said proudly, “ This, then, at last is bone of my bones, and flesh of my own flesh: This shall be called Wo-man for from man was she taken. Yet, with all that beauty, love, and attention, Eve had a distraction, called a snake! You see, sin was unknown to Adam or Eve. Oh but a snake is a snake is a snake! This distraction changed the whole course of the world. God told her not eat off one tree, of all the trees in the garden...
