When Is Enough Really Enough

When is Enough Really Enough I was inspired by John Updike because he expresses his peculiar passion for golf bliss for golf was a unique way he takes us through his passion not telling you why he likes it but how it is played and the aspects that make it so unique. Most people do not think about when thinking about all the little details involved in a passion. His since of style along with detail for every key component and concept that goes into the game is what makes his writing so much different for all the other I have read.
For a long time I never knew that one person could change your life in such a way that it shapes your future. I never knew such a passion for running could be ignited by something that you never thought or saw yourself doing and by someone you could only know for a year. It was not until I was twelve and in junior high school that I found a peculiar joy with running track.
Running hurdles was the most difficult of all the runs. Having to accurately time your jump and leg swing in order to clear the hurdle and make sure you did not lose any speed or hit the person next you presented a great degree difficulty. The size of the lanes always felt insufficient to the size of the hurdle, which made you feel that you were going to plummet. The most invigorating feeling was when you heard the popping of the starting gun, and then your heart would race as the sound ignites your senses and adrenaline running through your veins. Although hurdles were one of the hardest events to master when, acing it became one of the quickest short-lived moments of victory when you won that ribbon. Another devoted event that caught my interest was that of the long jump. Even though long jump was not a running event but more or less a one-on-one event, the outcome makes me feel on top of the world. As the skill was more about timing and technique, getting disqualified was one of the easiest things that could happen. When proceeding with a long jump you must first make your marking by running as fast as you can straight though the sand. There is a white line by the end to designate that if you cross this line before you jump your jump does not count. The technique to landing your perfect jump was to fall forward. In Bliss of Golf, John Updike, “The one that feels effortless and produces a shot of miraculous straightness and soar,” is the way an accomplished jump resembles. The excitement that permeates the body when you not only jump the furthest in your career but also beat the record of the day is incomputable. All the other events I ran were learned from basic running. You are either running by yourself or with a four people but not much of a big deal. It felt better when you won something by yourself than with others only because if one person did not do well everyone wanted to get on that person but no one realized that we affected each other, which had to be the worst part if someone asked me. Track is one of the main sports that need running that does not require a team. Everything is done on your own, the prating, competing, and the pain received from injuries you have acquired are all on the individual. My coach, Mr. Whiteside, would tell me, “If you keep up with the road you are on, I see you doing this in college. A full ride scholarship for track and field is all you need.” Being the person I am, I was not thinking about the future, yet alone college for the matter. All that mattered to me at that time was that I enjoyed running and the feeling of power I received when I got a medal or trophy. Not only did that recognition of receiving awards later made me feel like I could accomplish anything, but the fact that other coaches from other schools had their teams watching me. They would telling my coach how impressed they were by me for being on a track team for the first time I had ever did anything involving track and competing. I also feel a connection with Fan by Doris Kearns Goodwin because when I think about it if and when I do run on a track the memories come rushing back to me like frenzy and I cannot help but feel like I am back in junior high running and beating my own personal best scores. Even though others may not be able to tell when I feel that sun glaring down on a long hot day and the feeling that I give up, I hear the voice of my coach says, “You know your limits, find them and break them. I know it is in you.”
After junior high, from the age of fourteen to seventeen I continued running for Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps in high school. This was a different type of running in a way for me because everything, running to competing, was done in unison and as a team. Every point received was towards your teams’ goal and there were not a lot of individual awards given, well unless you were the smart one.
The difference between this type of running and my other from the past was I did not enjoy this one as much. It felt more like a job than a passion and many times I had considered quitting the team to go join another sport. All to say that did not happen due to the fact that I enjoyed other parts of the unit and I had made some really great friends in the years that passed.
Another relation to Doris Kearns Goodwin, when her passion faded after her father passed but then later brought back ruminations with her children that is how I started to feel entering college. I lost my passion for running due to all my injuries I had started to receive in the past but as soon as I had the thought of, “running relives my stress” I was back in motion. I would run but only until I felt the pain. Little by little I was able to run through the pain and I felt like my old self again. The girl that has once at her highest point in life was back on top.
Now though after running two years in junior high, four in high school and the occasional three miles in college, I look back on life and see that I might not have found my place in life if I did not decide to try something new. As a child I do not think I would not be who I am now. Even though I cannot run like I use to due to so many injures, I know that deep inside I have the beast inside just waiting to make its reappearance in my life and when that time comes full force it is going to a magnificent feeling to know I can once again do what I have set out to accomplish for so long.
In conclusion I feel that even though the lust for running and being athletic at the young age of eighteen the dire craving is slowly fading from my existence. The constant pain with all the other problems I received has taken a toll on this once majestic body. Until that time comes for me to do what I enjoy all I can do now is hope for the best and learns that many of my past mistakes make me achieve a successful future in whatever I put my mind to.

Why Should Schools Start Later

...Not enough Sleep can affect kids poorly More than 80% of schools start before 8:00. Schools should start time later because when kids fall asleep in class, they don’t get the knowledge they need, not enough sleep makes people sleepy and groggy and not enough sleep can hurt people mentally and physically. The first reason why sleep is important is when kids fall asleep in class, students don’t get the knowledge they need. Teenagers are tempted to stay up later so they have a tendency to fall asleep in class (The teen who woke up her school). This is bad if students fall asleep so this is one reason to push back school times. “60% of kids complain that they are tired in school,” states Sleepfoundation.org. Again, if school started at 8 or 8:30, there would be no problem with the complaining. The majority of students past the age of 13 are sleep deprived. To conclude this, Next when people don’t have enough sleep, people are really tired and cranky. The second reason why school should start after 8 is not enough sleep can make people sleepy...

...need love just like we need food and sleep. When we are younger we should receive love because it’s possible that we could not develop to love others. It’s very important for babies to get love because if they don’t there is a high chance that they will grow up to be alone and will have low self esteem. I agree that the “mother-infant relationship is the essence of love.” I agree with this because our mothers are really the first people we develop a real relationship with and how learn to love. If we don’t establish that relationship with our mothers, it will be relatively hard to love other people. Babies slowly learn how to live in the world and having a relationship with their mother is very important for the baby to develop relationships with other people while they are still young as well as when they get older. I agree with the talk about criminals. It says that they usually didn’t get enough love and affection while they were growing up. If you don’t get enough love as a child, you could end up going down the wrong path. You will most likely end up doing bad things to try and make up the lack of love and affection that you received as a child. Children with inattentive parents sometimes end up being criminals because they never really had anyone show them love 3 Disagrees: I disagree that babies need “continuous loving.” I think they just need to know that their mother is there and will acknowledge them. They just need enough love so they don’t feel like they are being...

Why School Hours Should Start Later In The Morning?

...reasons. One main reason is, to have enough sleeping hours. Another reason is that kids need to be healthy and have enough energy for the day, another way to improve that is to have a healthy breakfast before starting the day. When teens don't get enough sleep it can affect the brain in a poor matter, lack of sleep for teens and young adults can cause depression and major mood swings. School hours should start at least around 10, because it will have time for students to do whatever they need to do or get more sleep at least an hour more of sleep and it will be better and students wouldn't be so cranky about getting up in the morning. And it students can get real mad when they are...

Cesar Chavez Persuasive Speech

...Chavez formed unions and protested for better job conditions. In the end he was able to succeed in his struggle. Even so nowadays it seems that people have forgotten all about him. So I strongly believe that most people do not honor Cesar Chavez enough as they should. I believe that they may not honor Cesar Chavez enough since most of his memorial sites are rundown, some of the sites are actually forgotten or obsolete, and lastly people have forgotten or do not care for Cesar Chavez enough...

Plantation Creative Writing

...who to trust. Anybody could be waiting to hurt me, kill me, or send me back to the plantation. I sleep when I can, which is not much, but enough to keep me moving. Even when I have been fortunate enough to find a safe enough place to sleep, it is difficult. Sometimes my exhaustion is enough to send me straight to sleep, but other times I lie awake just thinking because my brain simply won’t calm down. My eyes sting from lack of sleep on the mornings following those nights. My health is not great, as of now. It is also not improving. About two nights ago, some hunting dogs found me. I quite miraculously got away, but not unharmed. There is a large gash in my leg from the bite of one of the two dogs’ strong jaw. There is too much blood, and I haven’t had medical training. I believe that I may soon lose consciousness because of the exertion, deprivation, and injuries that my body has sustained, but in spite of this I continue to attempt to...

...Lesson Plan Reflection by Tori Goldrick What happened when the lesson plan was implemented: The first day of the lesson had only one main problem. We had trouble finding enough working computers for each student to work individually. This was solved simply by having the students work with their assigned partner to complete the teacher-made scavenger hunt. This part of the lesson took only about 20 minutes, which allowed plenty of time to show the class the "Basics of DNA" video, and give them time to start reading from their science books. The second day of this lesson ran very smoothly. The students were contained in the media center and all focused on the Smart Board for the presentation. This I found out was just the calm before the storm. The first day we were in the computer lab was utter chaos. There weren't enough computers working for the number of groups I had. Then not all of the working computers had FrontPage Express on them. Finally to top it all off, most of the students didn't remember to bring their instruction handout from the day before. This meant that I was going to need to do a quick review for the class on how to use FrontPage Express. This took about 30 minutes away from their work time. I think that next time I do the lesson I am going to collect their handouts when we finish in the media center, then pass them out to them once we are in the computer lab. Once we got through the first day, the second one went well. The students were actively...

What Grinds My Gears

...serve any cereal at breakfast and god knows I love my cereal in the morning. Instead I have to settle for an American breakfast: sausage and bacon with some eggs as well. After I am done with my breakfast I check the time to see if I have to go to class yet. Seven forty-five, still fifteen minutes before I really have to go. So I grab the New-York Times and decide to catch up on the daily news. However, when I come back from getting the newspaper the group of five students who sat next to me decided that they did not have to pick up their trays with everything on them. I get a little annoyed that they could care less about something as simple as common courtesy. I decide to watch how many students actually pick up everything after they finish their breakfast. I am flabbergasted to see that roughly every one out of five students leave everything. This is when I really get angry. People that have no patience or common courtesy really grind my gears. People always seem to be in a rush and in concordance fail to have even the slightest trace of patience. The most common example of this that I experience is when I drive. In Miami people always seem to be in a rush. There is never enough time to get everything done and get from point “A” to point “B” as well. Therefore drivers feel it is necessary to honk at the slightest trace of calm, no one is allowed to take his or her time. WHY! Why are people not allowed to drive at their own pace? People should not be forced to drive above speed...

This was not even half of what she sent me: “I just really want you to stop thinking about what others think of you! Bianca, you used to not care! What happened to the best friend I had 7 years ago who didn't care about what others think? The girl who didn't even bother to think about petty dramas? The girl who had so much self-control yet is super fun to hang out with? The girl who had so much ideas to offer? The girl who was Bianca. I miss Bianca ok. Motorcycle Art

...Motorcycle Maintenance. That would be quite a novel, but for some reason I don't feel quite up to it. They're friends, not characters, and as Sylvia herself once said, 'I don't like being an object!' So a lot of things we know about one another I'm simply not going into. Nothing bad, but not really relevant to the Chautauqua. That's the way it should be with friends.' Page 121 Chapter 12 The statement, "I don't like being an object!" is encountered throughout many situations in an average daily life. As people, we sometimes tend to take advantage of certain things without meaning to because we're so used to the fact that they're always there. Friends aren't an exception to this statement. In the book, "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" by Robert M. Pirsig, the man telling the story, Phaedrus, lightly goes into this fact of life. Phaedrus is a very confused man with an interesting past, who tells the story about the man he used to be. While telling his story, he's travelling with two longtime friends, John and Sylvia Sutherland, and his son, Chris. During the times where he drifts back to reality and describes where he and his companions are in their travels, he never really describes himself, as in what he looks like or the looks and personalities of his travelling companions. This can seem a bit puzzling to the reader if they are attempting to picture the scene described or even the characters but the author had a good reason for doing so. The author...

Blind and Deaf

...Have you ever thought been deaf and blind? Annie Sullivan is a teacher in the story The Miracle Worker by William Gibson. When Annie first saw Helen’s family, Annie explained, “Language is more important to the mind that light is to the eyes” (Act I). Some people think that they are perfect, but they do not think about an outside world. Most of people are not really strong or they just give up to the world. When Annie was teaching Helen, Annie cried, “Helen, Helen! The bird must come out of its shell. You come out too” (Act III). Annie developed and grew up through this wonderful story, working really hard. At the beginning she was strong and determined, but Annie evolved at the end to be successful. At the beginning of the story, Annie was strong willed and determined. Annie was an orphan, her entire life. Annie lost her family but she lost her brother at the same orphanage she lived. It made Annie see how horrible it was to live that life is. So Annie did not want Helen to experience the same as she did. When Annie left the institute, she was worried that she was not prepared to teach other people. Annie had several problems with her eyes, but she had nine surgeries. It made her worried because she was not sure if the person she is going to teach would learn from her. When Annie first saw Helen, she exclaimed, “I wondered is she was bright, she is the brightest one in the house” (Act I). Annie always did the right thing to have great progress. In the middle of...

The Arsonist

... My first impression when I entered the stage was its design. The stage was not really large, which just had two main scenes. The living room scene was in the center and on the top right, they built the bed room scene. The stage design was simple and suitable. There were just a table and two chairs placed in the living room scene but it was good enough for the audience to imagine. There for, the actors still have space to perform freely and fluently. I also love the way they set up the bed room scene. They built a block on the right stage and use the space on the roof of the block for that scene. And inside the block, there was enough space for the pianist and percussionist to perform as well. In spite of the lack of space, the stage designer was good enough to put all the scenes together. About the playwright, it was good but not great. I felt lost and didn’t catch up with what they played sometimes. I was confused when they suddenly change the living room scene to the street scene because there was no sign to announce or describe what scene was coming next. The doctor character, which appeared at the end of the show, also made me confused. I have no idea what role they played in the show cause he also showed up suddenly without any introduction. However, the other parts were good and back up for my confusing. Arsonist was a comedy show and the director knew how to use those comedy stuffs to make the audience laugh. The arsonists’ characters were really funny. Their conversations...

The Reasons Why I Dont Sleep

...have are before I fall asleep at night. I used to be able to sleep well at night that changed after I started listening to music right before I fell asleep. I think that since I listened to violent music before I went to bed every night it really disrupted my sleep schedule. I remember one night where I was listening to music on my iPod before I went to bed. I had to get really early in the morning, around 4am to go to the gym with my trainer to work out. I remember listening to heavy metal before I tucked in for the night. Little did I know how much it was going to affect my sleep patterns and myself. I finally went to bed around 11 30pm, the whole night I was tossing and turning in my sleep. When I finally woke up around 4am to work out I felt horrible because I didn’t get enough sleep. Listening to music before I go to bed is a really terrible habit that I have and it’s really hard to break. After a while you get used to it and its almost like second nature to listen to music before you fall asleep at night. It can really disrupt how you wake up in the morning as well. I remember one time where I had to wake up early in the morning to go take a test. Since I had been listening to music the whole night it really threw me off in the morning when I had to wake up early. I took the test and thought I did pretty well on it. I got my results back and I ended up getting about a 65 percent on it. I guess I learned my lesson on that one. Another issue that I have at night before I...
