This part of the book is about the fishing village get hit by a tsunami. It all started when Kino was working at his family’s rice farm. He noticed the beautiful view of the blue sea. After he was done working, he then went to find Jiya, when he did find him Kino told the view of the sea. But Jiya said that “the sea is our enemy” which made Kino confused because the sea is very beautiful and it was hard to make Kino understand that Jiya was telling the truth. Then, they decided to go to the sacred deer island. There Kino feed the deer and got to look at Old Gentleman’s castle closer. They both had peeked into the garden to see the beautiful landscape. KIno’s father then took Jiya in the house on a quilt to let him sleep. Kino was very upset, so him father told Kino’s mother to make him warm soup to cheer him up. Then, Setsu came in and asked a lot of question about Jiya being alive or dead, Kino’s father did not have time to answer questions so he asked Setsu to go help her mother. After Kino had the warm soup it made him stop crying, Kino’s father soon decided that Kino will be part of the family now. After Jiya woke up he found himself in a house on the floor, and people looking at him, at first he thought it was his parents, but they all said that they will be his family now. What made him completely awake he the voice of Setsu. He then ran outside to see if the village had survived the big wave, but it sadly didn’t. Kino soon told him to come and eat dinner. After he was done eating, he said he wanted to go to sleep, which Kino’s father said he can. After Jiya went to bed, Kino’s father told him about life, death,and birth. Suddenly, Old Gentleman’s manservant said if this is the house of Uchiyama the farmer. Kino’s father said yes and Old Gentleman appeared they were surprised to see him here. Then Kino and Jiya saw people building a house on the beach. They quickly ran down to the beach and asked why are they building a house on the beach, they said this is where their great grandfather lived in this spot and they continued building the house. They then went back to the house. Then they saw Old Gentleman coming down to the village very slowly saying that they are fools for building on the beach again. Jiya they asked it may not come back, which then Old Gentleman asked if he saw him before. Jiya told him he been to his castle before. He then recognized him and said why he didn’t want to be his son, he could have been safe from the disasters. But Jiya said an earthquake could break the castle, then he walked back to his castle. Jiya had asked Kino’s father for money so overtime he can buy a boat, so Kino’s father will give him money overtime. When they got the boat, Kino and Jiya went out to the sea to test it out. He then said that he got a boat and now he wants a house and the beach for his future family.Jiya then said if Setsu is afraid to live on the beach. Kino asked why he asked.
