Which pop Corn Pops the Best?

Project Design
Purpose:
The purpose of this experiment is to determine which bran of popcorn will pop the best, leaving the fewest un-popped kernels.

Experimental design:
Pop 100 kernels from 3 different brands of popcorn one brand at a time. Count the number of popped kernels for each brand. Repeat this process for each brand 3 times. Average the number of kernels popped for each brand to determine which brand pops the best.

Variables: Dependent - amount of kernels popped. Independent – the product brand/manufacturer will vary with each test group. Controlled – cooking method, time and temperature will be regulated for each test group.

Threats to internal validity:
Freshness of popcorn kernels could impact ability to pop. In order to reduce this threat, the product dates should be similar. Each brand should have a manufacturing date within 3 days of each other.

Hypothesis:
All popcorn brands will pop the same, leaving an equal number of un-popped kernels.

A1. Introduction
Popcorn has been around for hundreds of years. The corn (maize) was introduced to the English settlers by the native Indians in 16th century (“Popcorn”, 2012). When heated, popcorn expends from a hard kernel into a puffed soft substance. Because popcorn is relatively cheap to purchase and make, popcorn is often seen in many areas such as at fairs, carnivals and is practically synonymous with at the movies. There is over one billion pounds of popcorn consumed in America each year (“What is the,” 2011). The love affair with popcorn has been well documented an experiments with popcorn can be traced back to the 1940’s. One such experiment is determining which bran of popcorn pops the best. This is an inexpensive experiment to recreate and relatively simple. There are many variations of this project including use of microwave

What Microwavable Popcorn Brand Is The Best

...What microwavable popcorn brand is the best? In our experiment we will test the four major brands of buttered popcorn and find the average amount of kernels in each bag(a quality bag should have produced 98% of the kernels popped), the unit price, and conduct a blind taste test. In the tests the independent variable is the brand of the popcorn. The dependent variables are the average amount of kernels per bag, the unit rate per bag, and the taste of the popcorn. The controlled variables are the temperature and time the popcorn is cooked at, the flavor of the popcorn, and the people we will be using in the taste test. Our hypothesis for this experiment is that if you eat Act II you will get more popcorn for your money then if you buy another brand because more popcorn pops per bag leaving you less unpopped kernels. An average american eats about 42-68 quarts of popcorn a year. 76% of people also claim to eat popcorn regularly, and about 70% percent of all popcorn is eaten at the consumer's home. Popcorn is so popular that January 19th was declared national popcorn day. Multiple people have compared and reviewed brands, nothing seem to be consistent. Since this a recurring issue we decided to research the most common reviews, the health benefits and problems of eating it, and the...

...4-25-2015 Popcorn Experiment Lakshmi Prakash Project Design Plan Popcorn is a popular treat for individuals. It is made up of dried corn kernels that have the ability to pop when activated by heat, yielding a soft, but crunchy snack. Popcorn can be made over the stove or in a microwavable bag. When the corn kernel is brought to a heat temperature of a boiling point, steam is formed from the water inside the kernel, this causes an intense pressure inside the kernel. Because the outside of the kernel is strong, it’s able to hold and capture the steam inside, which then quickly explodes and turns inside out. This is where we get the soft, but crunchy snack. Literature Review There are many brands of popcorn readily available at the grocery stores. There have been quite a few experiments done to test which one is the best in terms of producing the most amount of popped kernels. Sean Boyd did an experiment, titled “The Jawbreakers of the Popcorn Industry,” where he tested a total of 5 different brands of popcorn to see which one would produce the most kernels. He performed the experiment 3 times on each brand and it was successful. His hypothesis was incorrect, but it yielded an answer that Oroville popcorn was not the best popcorn, but that another brand was. I am using a similar method in my experiment, but based on his results I did not choose Oroville to be the leading popcorn brand (Boyd). Barbara Bolz wrote an article as to why popcorn pops while other...

...from the expensive popcorn compared to the cheaper store brand popcorn? Relevance of your testable question Everyone has heard of microwave popcorn. Microwave popcorn is very convenient, and comes in many different brands. Times are very tough in this economy, and many people are trying to find ways to save money. Could you save money by buying the cheaper brand of popcorn, or should you buy the expensive brand of popcorn? Literature Review I found one experiment done by Sean Boyd. He used 3 bags of 5 different brands of popcorn. He cooked all 5 brands using the same microwave, and the same amount of time. He was looking at how many un-popped kernels there were in each different brand. He had concluded that Act II was the best brand as far as un-popped kernels. I found another experiment named, “Which brand of popcorn pops the most.” There was a slight difference in his experiment from my experiment. In this experiment he was using regular popcorn instead of microwave popcorn. He had taken 100 kernels of each brand, and popped those in a popcorn popper. He then counted all the kernels. He counted the ones that popped plus the ones that didn’t. He then came to the conclusion that Act II was the best popcorn based on price and popped kernels. Experimental Design Steps Step 1) Gather all materials. 3 bags of Orville Redenbacher’s microwave popcorn, 3 bags of Act II microwave popcorn, and 3 bags of Kroger brand microwave popcorn, microwave, and...

...MICROWAVE POPCORN—NAME BRAND OR GENERIC? A. Project Design Plan Popcorn is a favorite snack when a family sits down to watch a movie. With the convenience of microwave popcorn, within two to three minutes you can have your snack while enjoying your movie. The problem is finding the right brand of microwave popcorn that pops the most kernels. I am going to take three different brands of popcorn and find out which one pops the most kernels. We all want the most out of anything we purchase. A1. Literature Review I found multiple web sites performing this same type of experiment. I chose two sites to use for comparison of my work. The fist site I viewed showed Orville Redenbacher’s brand was the best popping corn. However, they counted popped and un-popped kernels to get a percentage of popped kernels. The second site I viewed showed that the Act II brand had the least amount of un-popped kernels. Their experiment is comparable to mine. They counted only the un-popped kernels to get a percentage of un-popped kernels. Just like the second site viewed, I am only focusing on un-popped kernels. A2a. Experimental Design Steps 1. Purchase three different brands of microwave popcorn. Same flavor (butter, kettle corn, natural, etc.) and same size bags, or as close to the same size as possible. 2. Create a data sheet with five columns and three rows. Label the first column “brand name”, label the next three columns with “bag 1, bag 2, and bag 3”. Label the final column...

...Task 3 The Popcorn Experiment Skye McDonald-George Project Plan and Problem Statement In this project I will be testing whether or not popcorn yields a higher percentage of popped kernels when frozen. This is relevant because most people would like to get the best value out of items they purchased and this may demonstrate one way to do that. I will be freezing multiple bags of popcorn and then popping both frozen and unfrozen bags in the microwave. Finally I will count the popped and unpopped kernels to determine the percentages for both variables and if there is a difference. Literature Review Through my research I did not find any other experiments like my own. I did, however, find two other popcorn experiments that helped me decide on my experimental plan. In both articles, the experimenters were trying to decide which brand of popcorn produced the lowest yield of unpopped popcorn. The Popcorn and College Students describes any broken kernel as popped and any intact kernels as unpopped (Saum, DeLap, Skinner, & Galli, 2003). Tammie Mason’s experiment however gives much more concise direction and describes the mathematics she used to obtain the data (Mason, 2011). Both experiments use the method of counting the kernels to determine a percentage (Mason, 2011) (Saum, DeLap, Skinner, & Galli, 2003). This is the method I will use for my experiment. Experimental Design Steps 1. Place 3 bags of popcorn in freezer. 2. Leave bags of popcorn in freezer 24...

...popping. The oldest ears of popcorn ever found were discovered in the Bat Cave of west central New Mexico in 1948 and 1950. Ranging from smaller than a penny to about 2 inches, the oldest Bat Cave ears are about 4,000 years old. Popcorn was integral to early 16th century Aztec Indian ceremonies. Bernardino de Sahagun writes: “And also a number of young women dance, having so vowed, a popcorn dance .As thick as tassels of maize were their popcorn garlands. And these they placed upon ( the girls ) heads”. In 1519, Cortes got his first sight of popcorn when he invaded Mexico and came into with the Aztecs. Popcorn was an important food for the Aztec Indians, who also used popcorn as decoration for ceremonial headdresses, necklaces and ornaments on statues of their gods, including Tlaloc, the god of rain and fertility. An early Spanish account of a ceremony honoring the Aztec gods who watched over fishermen reads: “They scattered before him parched corn, called momochitl, a kind of corn which burst when parched and discloses its contents and makes its look like a very white flower; they said these were hailstones given to god of water.” Writing of Peruvian Indians in 1650, the Spaniard Cabo says. “They toast a certain kind of corn until it bursts. They call it pisancalla, and they use it as a confection.” The use of the moldboard plow became commonplace in the mid-1800 and led to the widespread planting of maize in the United States. Popcorn is a type of maize...

Models!

...The specification says ‘explanations’, which means you’ll need to know at least two explanations. 1. The importation model – this explains aggression in prisons. In brief, it says aggression occurs because of characteristics that prisoners bring inside with them. Cheeseman (2003) said that men in prison have a certain way of behaving (probably why they went to prison in the first place!) and they then apply that behaviour to their new institutional setting. Toch (1997) says this: all prisons inherit their subcultural sediments from the street corners that supply them with clients. This suggests that young people can be aggressive both on the street and in prison. Personal and psychological factors that existed in inmates before being incarcerated can affect the level of aggressive behaviour shown in prison. Mills, Kroner and Weekes (1998) studied prisoners admitted to a Canadian prison using the alcohol dependence scale (ADS). Inmates who had higher levels of dependence were associated with more aggression shown in prison. Also, inmates who had greater periods of unemployment, lower levels of education, and a more serious criminal record were more likely to be aggressive in prison (Kane and Janus, 1981). Demographic variables that seem to influence aggression in prisons are race and age. Studies in America have shown that non-whites and younger prisoners are more likely to be aggressive whilst incarcerated. Kane and Janus (1981) say that this is because these groups...
