Thesis: The ability to convey emotion is more restricted to the actor’s performance in the black and white representations of Hamlet.
Characters in black and white have to act remarkable because they do not have colour to rely on; to make their performance look better. Black and white enhances the impact of violence and the opposition of good and evil. In Sir Lawrence Olivier’s adaptation of Hamlet, the scene is shot in black and white. He does not have colour, so he acts in a way which conveys the message and displays Hamlet’s internal struggle. His soliloquy includes many uses of props; he has a knife pointing at him which represents his suicidal thoughts. The waves symbolize his re-occurring suicidal and conflicting thoughts. The rock indicates …show more content…
Branagh’s adaptation takes place at the Elsinore Castle which is colourful, clean and polished. He has a clean and perfectly groomed mustache which indicates that he is pristine and determined. He does not show as much as facial expressions and change of tones as Olivier and Burton do because he has the ability to depend on on colour. He uses one consistent whispering tone and has a knife which he is pointing towards his reflection in the mirror. Claudius and Polonius are on the other side of the mirror and this indicates that he is threatening Claudius. In Branagh’s version he is not the main focus because there is Claudius and Polonius on the other side and there is a lot of colour present. His version does not make the viewer use their imagination because everything is already there to see. There is no mystery or shadows present in his adaptation because the colour strips it all away, black and white allows to highlight key scenes. When Branagh’s Hamlet comes to realization there is no change of mood and tone, he is very consistent and steady, where as in Sir Lawrence Olivier’s and Richard Burton’s adaptation’ s almost everything

What Does The Golden Blonde Hair Symbolize In Hamlet

...Mallory. The name is derived from Old French word “malheure” meaning unfortunate, unhappy, and unlucky. This painting is a representation of the famous Shakespearean play, Hamlet. The painting features a woman with golden blonde hair, skin that is pale and sickly, eyes that are blind and shedding tears of blood, a deformation at the forehead, lips consumed by a black substance, and four streaks of blood at the neckline. Every portion of the piece tells the play symbolically. Foremost, the golden blonde hair represents Hamlet’s hair color in the cinematic production of Hamlet by Branagh. The pale white skin symbolizes Hamlet’s cold soul due to his father’s death. The white skin signifies how cold, isolated, empty, and detached Hamlet became. His father’s death caused him to separate from society. He felt as if nobody was sympathizing with him as he was grieving for his father’s death....

Hamlet Turning Point Essay

...scene I chose to present Hamlet is holding Yorick’s skull with a sword on his back in a graveyard. This scene is a turning point in the story when Hamlet truly won’t let anything get in his way from claiming his revenge. It also portrays Hamlet leaving behind his past and moving forward and not letting past experiences get in his way of claiming victory at last. The way Hamlet is shown represents his transformation from being innocent and pure to being dark and spiteful in his actions and attitude towards his pears and superiors. The sword that Hamlet holds in the scene represents his determination in killing Claudius and avenging the death of his father. Before his transformation Hamlet would have been too afraid to act on an opportunity....

Hamlet Sanity

...Huynh Thieu Dinh (Felix) Eng4U Mr. Burton October 31th, 2013 Hamlet Act 1 Scene 5: Pirate of the Caribbean Curse of the Black Pearl Hamlet is a story take place around the 14th to 15th century in the land of Denmark. The ghost scene from act 1 scene 5 is a crucial scene since it is the beginning of Hamlet’s plot for revenge. It is also one of Shakespeare “signature” scenes because most of his plays always include a supernatural figure manipulates and affects the plot. Then how could anything make the scene any better than it is now? The answer is changes the scene to an adaptation of the movie “Pirate of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl”. The adaptation would change the setting, costumes and makeups, dialogue, lighting, and figure placement. Setting: In the adaptation, I want to add in an ominous atmosphere for the setting of the scene because it would fit the supernatural event. First the time setting is at a starless night along with a crescent moon. Hamlet runs through a dark forest toward the ghost voice beyond the luminous light. Then, Hamlet reaches a sea shore covered in thick layers of mists. The dark forest, luminous light and misty sea shore are the factors that contribute to the mysterious setting. The reason I create this part of the setting is to enhance the meeting between Hamlet and the ghost. When Hamlet reaches the seashore, the voice stops and he then sees a ghost ship floats into a cave. Again, the cave also acts as a factor generates the haunting...

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are to check up on Hamlet because they bear respect and long-time friendship with him. In spite of Claudius’s expression of grave concern for Hamlet’s change, he, however, summoned Rosencrantz and Guildenstern for self-promotion. After sending away Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, Polonius enters and exclaims that he believes he has found the cause of Hamlet’s madness. Kenneth Branagh's Role

...Kenneth Branagh’s Role The Branagh version of Shakespeare’s play Hamlet bring s a much more enlightening experience to the feelings and actions of the characters. Branagh incorporates an authentic aristocratic setting where even the background visuals bring out the characters themselves. The imagery is able to capture symbolic parts of Shakespeare’s play, and emphasizes their relation to the story. Kenneth Branagh portrays Hamlet’s role in a deeply moving performance, almost makes the character his own. His strong emotions and patterned rhythm match the Shakespearian tragedy with little effort. In this manner, Branagh proves to be a competent director and actor in featuring Hamlet as not just a classic, but as a tragic real world conflict in history. With the introduction, Branagh brings the play straight into an ominous atmosphere. The Blenheim Palace, where the movie was directed, was able to create a scene of dark impending dangers. The hours of night rather than daylight and a season of cold winter characterized the theme of death. Already the audience could observe Hamlet’s misery beginning to take place over his father’s end. The director succeeds to contrast the gloomy mood with the happy aristocrats living peacefully in the royal palace. Often, there were scenes of high-class men dressed in full uniform and women in jewels and evening dress gathering in the court in laughter or comfort. The sight is disconcerting to the viewer and helps reason why Hamlet’s reaction...

Does Hamlet Love Ophelia

...Hamlet suddenly opened Ophelia’s door in shock and Ophelia glared at him absentmindedly. He grabbed her hand physically and observed her like there was a spider on her face. Ophelia examined him in confusion thinking about what is wrong with him. In the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare, Hamlet shows Ophelia how much he loves her with a letter that he writes her. However, sometimes he does not show it at times. Although, when he finds out that Ophelia died, he shows everyone that he loves her with all his heart. Hamlet undeniably loves Ophelia because he cares, he is protective, and he made sure she was happy. Hamlet shows he loves Ophelia by reacting strongly after she dies. For example, when Hamlet finds out that Ophelia died, he screams to Laertes,”Will you cry? Fight? Stop eating? Cut yourself? Drink vinegar? Eat a crocodile? I’ll do all that,” (Shakespeare 297). Hamlet explains to Laertes that he will do anything to have her around one more time. He is devastated that Ophelia died. He just wishes to spend one more moment with her if she were alive. Hamlet

...Hamlet: Ophelia vs. Gertrude In the play, “Hamlet”, written by William Shakespeare, there are only two women in the entire play, Gertrude and Ophelia. Gertrude is Hamlets wicked mother. Ophelia is a girl who loves Hamlet. Throughout the entire play, they are shown to be two totally different characters. In a sense though, they are both alike, they are both women who are held back by love. In “Hamlet,” Ophelia plays the role of Hamlet’s love-interest. She is a strong-willed character that faces many hardships throughout the play, but remains true to her, and to the ones she loves. Not caring just for what she sees as good, but for those who care about her as well, and also do her good. She cares for Hamlet a great deal, and wants him to notice that not all women are like his mother, Gertrude; all sexual, and cold-hearted, that they too can love, and care just as Hamlet does for Ophelia. Gertrude plays the role of Hamlet’s mother, and also a conniving queen, who uses her body and sexuality to get what she wants. Gertrude is the main reason that Hamlet doesn’t like women, because he sees how she really is, and not mentioning the fact that he knows that she had his father (the Ghost in the story) killed to let her lover Claudius take the throne. Hamlet is mad at her for such a thing being that Claudius is his uncle. Also, Gertrude is a woman of fine things. We really don’t expect much less from her, but we don’t really read too...

Hamlet Act 1 Questions

...Hamlet act I, Questions: The opening scene of the act I can be seen as a misterius and curies approach, because the guards reply with “ who’s there”, “ask it something”, “Quiet shut up it comes again”. Which in return sets up tone for the opening scene. The reason why Francisco and other guards were assigned to guard the palace was because the king of Norway was killed by the king of Denmark. Therefore the king son of Norway wanted to reclaim the land the king from Denmark took. Francisco is uneasy because of the extreme quietness during his shift. The ghost appears to look in a battle gear attire, have white hair sticking out like whiskers, and look like the previous king from Denmark. Horatio and the rest decide to tell hamlet about the...

Great Gatsby

...Hamlet: William Shakespeare biography: * William Shakespeare is the grand literary figure of the Western world. During England's Elizabethan period he wrote dozens of plays which continue to dominate World Theater 400 years later. Shakespeare handled high drama, romance and slapstick comedy with equal ease, and so famous are his words that his quotes, from "To be or not to be" to "Parting is such sweet sorrow," take up more than 70 pages in recent editions of Bartlett's Familiar Quotations. His works rival the King James Bible (also produced in the 1600s) as a source of oft-quoted English phrases. Shakespeare is known as "the Bard of Avon," in a nod to his birthplace, and many of his plays were originally performed in the famous Globe Theater in London. Among his best-known plays are Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, and MacBeth. He is also known for his poetry, especially his sonnets. (Who2biographies) * William Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway in 1582. Their daughter Susannah was born in 1583, and the twins Judith and Hamnet were born in 1585. Hamnet died in 1596... William Shakespeare's precise birthdate is not known; he was baptized on 26 April 1564, and over time 23 April has become the accepted date of birth, in part because he also died on 23 April in 1616.( Who2biographies) * Shakespeare produced most of his known work between 1589 and 1613. Hamlet Journal

...Hamlet Journal (1) Act 1, Scene 5, line 32 Ghost: I find thee apt, And duller shouldst thou be than the fat weed That roots itself in ease on Lethe wharf, Wouldst thou not stir in this. Now, Hamlet, hear. 'Tis given out that, sleeping in my orchard, A serpent stung me. So the whole ear of Denmark Is by a forgèd process of my death Rankly abused. But know, thou noble youth, The serpent that did sting thy father’s life Now wears his crown. (2) Paraphrase: a. The ghost is glad that Hamlet is so excited about revenging the father’s death. The ghost explained how his death was meant to look and that his death was a lie. Then the ghost informed Hamlet who was responsible for his death. Hamlet’s uncle is the one who murdered his father. (3) My comments b. I think that this is the start of the book; before this the book was just getting you use to the characters. When the ghost appears to Hamlet he is eager to get revenge for his father’s death. But when the ghost tells Hamlet that his uncle is the one who kills him; I feel like when this is revealed it took the story to a new level. First your father just died, your mom married your uncle and now all of a sudden a ghost appears to tell you that his death was a lie. On top of it being a lie, the person who did it was your uncle. I think this is going to make Hamlet lose control over him. He will either go into a deep depression or he is going to be so angry and not be able to control himself...

Ophelia And Nina's Insanity In 'The Black Swan'

...Both Ophelia, and Nina have a very similar steep incline into madness, resulting in exaggeration of reactions, deliriousness, loss of control, and eventually death. Moreover, the two characters problems are caused by the same oppressors. For Ophelia, her oppressors are her father and brother, and for Nina, her oppressors are her mother and her teacher. Nina and Ophelia's slow descent into madness are alike in that they begin the stories with a pure, virginal aura, which for Nina, quickly changes. In Hamlet, Ophelia is constantly compared to flowers such as lilies most commonly, and her father and brother strongly condemn the innocence that comes with her character. In The Black Swan, everything Nina wears and does is closely related to innocence....

Is Hamlet Good Or Evil

...In Hamlet, Claudius, the antagonist in the play, is considered to be an evil character. For it is Claudius that killed Hamlet’s father. On the other hand, Hamlet, the protagonist, is considered to be the good character that seems to be trying to avenge his father’s murder. On the other hand, in Lyrical Ballads, the poem “Goody Blake and Harry Gill” Harry Gill is considered to be evil because he scared a poor lady that was just trying to get warm from the cold weather. Can we characterize the previous characters as good or evil? Can we actually categorize specific actions as good or evil? I believe we can not do so. It is because people have their own perspectives on what is virtue and what is not. For example, Alcohol consumption in western...

How Does Gertrude Present Familial Love In Hamlet

...The Themes of Hamlet: Love in Denmark Through the interactions between young Prince Hamlet, his lover Ophelia, and his mother Queen Gertrude, Shakespeare explores the themes of romantic and familial love. The two main female characters are torn between their love for their families and love for their romantic lovers. Ophelia is torn between her love for Hamlet and loyalty to her father, and Gertrude must choose between her love for Claudius and love for Hamlet. Ultimately, Ophelia and Gertrude’s choices and interactions with the men in their lives suggest that familial love is stronger than romantic love. Hamlet’s treatment towards Ophelia reflects the fickleness of romantic love, and Ophelia’s obedience to her father demonstrates the strength of familial love. Likewise, Gertrude’s quick marriage with Claudius reflects the fickleness of romantic love, and Gertrude’s unwavering love for Hamlet demonstrates the strength of familial love....
