White Lie
Lying is unforgivable. People who lie are disgusting and we should keep distance with them. We are tought taught to tell truth since we were born. I also firmly believed this until one day when I was so nervous of everything. My teacher told me that I was the best student she had seen. It is her white lie that inspired confidence in me. And Then I realized that lying is not necessarily a an intolerable thing. What’s more, We we would rather get a white lie instead of a an intolerable truth. Telling a white lie is not dishonest. Moreover, the people who tell white lies are so considerate as pure angels. I’d like to tell you a beautiful white lie comes from . A dying patient could see a big tree outside from her room. When the leaves fell down off one by one, she became weaker and weaker. So she said,”I’llsaid,” I’ll die as the leaves all gogone.” Yet, there was only one leaf was still hunging hanging on the tree even after a rainstorm. HowerverHowever it is “the firm leaf” which actually was actually a painting of by a warm-hearted painter who had heard of the remark of her that made her go through the crucial point. A lie though it is, it comes from goodwilling and be respected all the time. A white lie not only can give others hope as the last leaf, but also can make life better, prevent arguementargument, protect others. Without the word of “you are the best” from his mother, Forrest Gump would have not gotten the honor. Without the word of “your taste is good” from my father, my mother who wanted to buy a suit that didn’t fit her would have disputed with him. Withou Without the word of “we are in the Jurassic age” from Chris Gardner, his son would have been deeply hurt by their experience of WCsleeping in the restroom. As we have seen, sometimes we just need a white lie rather than a truth. As a matter of fact, telling truth may result lead in to bad consequences. For example, a boy wants to date with you, whereas you dislike him at all, can you refuse directly? Of course not! It will hurt the boy deeply. Besides it will be soundeds like you are so rude. What’s worst, it will make you two break off! In contrast, a mild white lie of “sorry, I have ana important meeting appointment on that day” can solve all problems. Additionally we allall of us are more willing to hear a white lie at such a an embarrasingembarrassing moment. White lies are necessary on some spacialspecial occasions. A white lie can help us find the reason of smiling at life. A white lie can help us find the hope of living on. A white lie can help us find the kindness of human. Next time if you are going to speak out a turthtruth, please think it one more time. In short, a white lie is more precious than an actual fact.

White Lies

...Jinwoo Hur EH 216 Poetry Analysis 7/7/11 White Lies Part: 1 In the poem “White Lies,” Natasha Tretheway describes a girl telling white lies as a child in a first person narrative. In the first stanza, she describes herself as “light-bright’ near white, high-yellow, red-boned, in a black place.” Red boned means a racially mixed person, and she is describing her skin as a light and near white color. The next stanza shows the readers what kind of lies she said. She told the white folks that she lived uptown, her homemade dresses were straight from Mason Blanche, and she kept quiet when a white girl called her white. Her lies shows that she wants to hide the fact that she lives in a black neighborhood, and she wants to pass as a white. The third stanza describes the punishment she received when her mom found out she was telling the lies. Her mom cleaned her mouth with “ivory soap,” claiming it would purify and cleanse the lying tongue. Rhetoric

...Nicholas Hamilton Rhetoric 20 Amy J. February 17, 2015 The Irony in Nietzsche Friedrich Nietzsche writes in his essay “On Truth and Lies in a Nonmoral Sense” about the understandings of knowledge, truth, and morality. Interestingly the translation of the original title for Nietzsche’s work might have been “On Truth and Lie in the Extramoral Sense.” This is interesting because the translated version that is given for readers is “Nonmoral”; however another possible translation could have been “Extramoral” which shows that his writing may either be something not consistent with morality, but it may also be overly moral as well. Kenneth Burke writes in his work “Four Master Tropes”, about the tropes of metaphor, metonymy, synecdoche, and irony. He provides numerous definitions of irony as well as the three temptations of irony. Nietzsche’s writing and ideas about “truth and lies” are “ironic” based on the definition and examples Burke uses as well as the standard dictionary definition of irony. This irony accomplishes incongruity with what appears to be truth and lies and what it actually is; since there is no concrete truth, this is ironic in itself. Individuals often confuse and misuse the term ironic, but Kenneth Burke gives his opinion of what irony is. He says, “Irony arises when one tries, by the interaction of terms upon one another, to produce a development which uses all the terms…they are all voices, personalities, or positions, integrally affecting one another” (432)....

My Best Day Ever

...how important family means to me.       On March 22, 1979, it was a warm, beautiful, breezy, summer day, and I could hear the chirping of baby birds in their nest. Upon my face shined the bright sun through my bedroom window. This day represented my birth right of turning fourteen years old, and I needed to figure out what to wear on this special occasion. As I walked toward my closet door, there was a breeze of warm spring sunflowers gathering in each corner of my bedroom. As I inhaled this delightful smell, I thought of my favorite sunflower dress to wear. The length went below my knees and it had two straps on each shoulder. The base color of my dress was pure white cotton material with medium sunflowers patterns around the bottom. I chose my flat flip-flop scandals and brushed my hair into a ponytail with a white ribbon tied in a bow. At that moment in my life, I felt like a beautiful young lady. As I stood in front of the mirror admiring myself, a loud knock rattle from the other side of my bedroom door. I opened the door, and there stood my sisters and brothers with the excitement of “Happy Birthday” roaring off their tongues. My eyes began to fill with tears just knowing that my family was as excited as I was about my special day. We all decided to run...

The Story Behind the Moon Cakes of Beijing

...the unique Beijing-style moon cakes have satisfied the taste buds(味蕾) of locals for generations. They may not look as fancy as Cantonese-style moon cakes, but the Beijing versions have their own unique features. The handmade, hard-crusted moon cakes are made of rock sugar, walnut kernels(核桃仁), pumpkin seeds(南瓜子) and qinghongsi(青红丝), or candied tangerine peel(陈皮) slices. "The most popular ones among Beijingers are zilaihong and zilaibai. Zilaihong uses red sugar in the dough, while zilaibai uses white sugar. The taste is simple but pure," said Chi Xiangdong, former Owner of Dao Xiang Cun. And there’s an interesting story behind zilaibai and zilaihong. Legend has that long ago a serious plague hit Beijing. To help the sick people, Chang’e the mythical Moon Goddess sent her servant the Jade Rabbit, which made two kinds of medicine, one red and one white. The medicine gradually evolved into zilaibai and zilaihong moon cakes, which preserved the red and white colors. Although it’s just a legend, ever since then, zilaibai and zilaihong moon cakes have always been linked to rabbits. "It’s actually a kind of toy for the kids, but it evokes memories from the past and definitely adds more fun to the festival," Chi Xiangdong said. Now, with more variations of moon cakes on the market, traditional Beijing moon cakes have begun to fade from public view. However, for some, the memories the cakes represent are the most precious. "When I was a boy, I always...

...very appealing to the eye, and marketing use this color’s attractiveness as an advantage. All of these ads have a strong use of pathos and ethos, they use stuff and persons with an important well known background, like the Einstein picture, who is famous for his energy theories and they took a good advantage of that, and by adding a little humor they can get more attention. The way they are fighting the war against France is pretty much as trying to make them look more important than France itself, like if France is lost and its dependant from Red Bull. By making war to France, they are getting more fame. All of these pictures contain black and white to make the viewer see the Red Bull drink better than the ad, that way they can know what is first, and then will focus their attention into the picture. Also, they are in black and white because they are telling you how boring everything is without Red Bull, and the drink Red Bull is in its colors blue, red, and silver, meaning that if you drink Red Bull your day will brighten up. In the picture with the old man is lifting into the air with his bicycle, there is other people in the background, and they are still in the ground, they cannot fly, because they don’t have Red Bull. So if you don’t get Red Bull you can’t fly and everyone loves flying, which is the background meaning for energy. They used an old man for this ad to represent that no matter what age you are, you can always get lots of energy. ...

The Effect of Light in the Growth of Plant

...other light is available. Artificial lights allow regular people to plant whole gardens in places where no plant would ordinarily grow. A lesson in cell metabolism-energy and photosynthesis mentions that “chlorophyll absorbs most red, orange, blue, and violet light. It reflects green and yellow light, giving its body a green coloring”. This statement got the researchers curious and wondered if plants act differently to the green and yellow colors of light, then they should have different reactions and effects to every color of light. Which Is the Better Colour

...Which is the better colour, black or white? Colour is known as the ‘fill’ of objects, environment and even the skin of some people around us. It is defined as a visual sensation differing with wavelengths which results from the light that they may emit or transmit. My question is; ‘which is the better colour out of black or white?’ Black may not be considered a colour while white might and vice versa; however the attractiveness and appeal of these two ‘colours’ to those who perceive it is my main focus. Regardless of which colour is more suitable to a person’s standards; I am answering this question by thoroughly comparing the two different colours and will attempt to reach a conclusion of which is the dominant colour. First off I will start with the colour black. Black is normally affiliated with feelings of depression which can be reflected through various things such as accessories or clothing. Black can cause powerful feelings of isolation and imply an inconspicuous nature of somebody who is wearing all black so they are not recognised. Black is a pure colour; the opposite of colours filled with vibrancy and passion and contains a much more direct approach. When black is worn, it can be perceived as sophisticated e.g. a person in an all-black suit for work or rebellious e.g. the common teenage punk rock attire. The colour black is known to stimulate an atmosphere of mysteriousness due to the secretive nature of the colour. Black is the most common colour in sophisticated...

...ACA 122 Advertisements and Your Health I discovered that after watching a commercial for Victoria’s Secret that I had to have their newest bra. In my opinion, the bra looked very sexy and would definitely impress my husband. When the model looked into the camera, it was as if she was speaking directly to me. I had to have this bra in the exact black and white color she was wearing. I wanted to look sexy and be confident just like the girl in the advertisement. Many of my bras come from Victoria’s Secret so I had no problem running into the store to make this particular purchase. I was so confident that I didn’t even bother to try it out before leaving the store. When I put this bra on to go out on a date with my husband I was in shock! It was the worst bra I have ever felt in my life. The straps cut down into my shoulders leaving painful red marks. I could also feel the underwire cutting into my skin. I am currently using a fade cream to get rid of the scars that the bra left behind. I intend to continue to shop at Victoria’s Secret but I will not assume that all their products are good just because some model appears to sexy and comfortable. I will not let a model trick me into thinking that a product is right for me just because of the way it looks. The bra probably left her in pain just as it did me. The only difference is that she got paid to suffer and I didn’t. I also intend to try on every bra that I purchase before leaving the store. In the future...

White Whale

...color white. Because of this imagery, the formalist criticism can be used to further analyze the text. Formalism analyzes texts under the assumption that we will only understand a text within the writing’s own form. The imagery of the “whiteness of the whale” consumes the entire 42nd chapter of Moby Dick. Because white, in many cultures, is associated with beauty and goodness, Melville talks about the images of white marbles and pearls and how the whiteness these objects make them more desirable. Not only does white depict beauty but it is also a symbol of power and dominance. For example Melville refers to the color white as the “imperial color”, mentioning white man’s dominance over “every dusky tribe”. To further illustrate the “goodness” of whiteness Melville relates the color to the “innocence of brides”, and the divineness of the wild white horse. Another attribute Melville associates with whiteness is “holiness”, mentioning that all priests wear. The color white symbolizes many different positive characteristics throughout this chapter. Melville mentions the association between this color and traits like innocence, purity, and goodness. Immediately after discussing the goodness of whiteness, he identifies that the color can also have a negative connotation. The color white also serves as a serious contradiction in itself as it makes things that are awful and evil in nature seem pure and righteous. For example in animals such as the white shark...
