Social Work Pioneer Biography

...Social Work Pioneer Biography Monica Quinn University of Southern Mississippi Abstract Mary Ellen Richmond and Whitney M. Young, Jr. were both social work pioneers that changed the face of the social work profession. This essay discusses their backgrounds, challenges they faced, and the road to their success. It also discusses the contributions they made to the field of social work as well as their awards and achievements. Their backgrounds, though very different, led them both to the same calling - helping those in need. Social Work Pioneers Introduction of Pioneer Mary Ellen Richmond, an essential part in the organization of the Social Work profession, was born in Belleville, Illinois in 1861 to Henry and Lavina Richmond. At the age of three, she was sent to live with her maternal grandmother and two aunts after both her parents died of tuberculosis. Richmond's grandmother was a spiritualist and a radical therefore; Richmond was exposed to "discussions of suffrage, racial problems, spiritualism, and a variety of liberal religious, social, and political beliefs" (Szymoniak, n.d.). Her family disapproved of the traditional education system so Richmond was home-schooled until the age of eleven. According to Rev. Phyllis L. Hubbell, the only reported education she received while being home-schooled was from reading books that were loaned to her by an aunt with the requirement that she would give an account of what she had read (2007). Surprisingly, her dedication...

Houston began singing at a young age in her church choir within her hometown and released her debut album at the age of (22). During this time, she scored three #1 singles, delivered four more #1 titles, and earned her first Grammy. When Whitney married singer Bobby Brown in 1992, her career got off track. Early Life/ Influences Whitney Houston, born on Aug. 9, 1963 in Newark, New Jersey, almost seemed destined from birth to become a singer. Her mother Cissy Houston, her cousin Dionne Warwick, and her godmother Aretha Franklin are all legendary figures in American Gospel and Soul Music. Whitney’s mother Cissy was the choir’s Minister at New Hope Baptist Church, and it was there that young Whitney got her start. By the time she turned fifteen, Whitney was often performing with her mother and trying to get a record deal of her own. ...Pastor Joe Carter from New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, which Houston attended growing up, recalled how she would come sing at some Easter Sunday services even after she'd made it big. Others recalled fondly how Houston would often return to the area, treating neighbors and fellow church members like family. "It's almost like she never left," said Sharpe James, a former Newark mayor who organized concerts for a young Houston as well as her mother, gospel singer Cissy Houston. "Here's a superstar, but you could find her in Newark, at the church. She was everywhere and everything to everyone." Pride tied to her enormous talents, and her fame, are also part of her appeal in the Garden State. Gov. Chris Christie told reporters Tuesday that he believes Houston belongs in the same class as Frank Sinatra, Count Basie and Bruce Springsteen as far as musical luminaries hailing from New Jersey. That's particularly true at the Whitney E. Houston Academy of Creative and Performing Arts, a school for pre-kindergarten through eighth grade in East Orange, a few blocks from where the singer spent much of her childhood with her parents and two brothers. Tearful students and staff remembered Houston -- a frequent visitor since the school was named in her honor about 15 years ago -- at a memorial event Monday. In addition to speeches and the release of white balloons, her historic rendition of the national anthem before Super Bowl XXV was replayed. Students told CNN affiliate WCBS afterward...

...accident and paralyzed from waist down. He lived 25 years after his injury; which is not normally consistent with an injury of this type. He later died of complications of a colon cancer surgery. I would like to discuss his triumphs of accusations of drug abuse, struggling to become an international artist, and dealing with being a paraplegic. Come with me as I take a walk down memory lane of Balladeer; Teddy Pendergrass. Pendergrass was born Theodore DeReese Pendergrass in Philadelphia on March 26, 1950. He was an only child. Pendergrass’s mom had six miscarriages before giving birth to him; all of them were boys. His parents were Jesse Pendergrass and Ida Geraldine Epps. Pendergrass parents separated when he was very young. Jessie Pendergrass was killed later; Teddy was only 12 years old. Pendergrass was a student at Thomas Edison High; which was an all-boys school. Before dropping out in the 11th grade; he was a member of the Edison Mastersingers. He decided to pursue a career in the music industry after dropping out. His first gig was a drummer with some of the local groups in Philadelphia. He eventually became a drummer for a group called, the Cadillacs. He was discovered by Harold Melvin who was the founder of the Blue Notes, and was asked to play drums in the group. Pendergrass song along during a performance one time; and Harold was so impressed; he made him the lead vocalist. Pendergrass changed the struggle of the Blue Notes;...

Celebrity Role Models. Yes or No?

...police officer. Justin Beiber egged a house. When in the public eye, celebrities do not act appropriately, and this is not what people need to look at as a mentor. Celebrities are often caught using drugs. Alex Rodriguez was recently caught using steroids while participating in the Major League. Whitney Houston overdosed on cocaine a few years ago before a concert. Amanda Bynes is a known current cocaine user. Using drugs is not what our society needs to look for in a role model. When celebrities think they have immunity they break laws and go to jail. Ray Rice was accused of beating his wife. Adrian Peterson was also accused of abusing his son. A Penn State football coach was found guilty of molesting some of his players. A quarterback at Florida State was accused of molesting a peer. Many big figures have been accused of misconduct, and everyone sees these horrible things. In conclusion, because celebrities act inappropriately, do drugs, and break laws, they do not make good role models. As children grow up with these celebrities, they feel as its okay to act in the same matter. Amanda Bynes was not seen as a threat when growing up, but now society has an uncontrollable young adult on their hands. Even though some celebrities are not good role models, my role model...

...“And the winner is…………….Amy Doherty”. I could not believe I had just won the All-Ireland Art competition. I had put so much work and effort into my portrait and it paid off. It was a painting of Whitney Houston. I think the facial features were really defined and my use of colour brought it to life. Everyday in my art class I would do small parts of the portrait as I wanted to take my time and not rush it. My art teacher gave me tips about shadowing and blending in and anything else I needed help with. I would really like to thank her for all her help during the competition. The winner was to be announced at the Ramada Encore Hotel in Letterkenny. When we arrived there, it was overcrowded with students, parents and teachers from other schools and youthreaches around Ireland. When everyone was seated and the winner was announced, I was so shocked and happy to hear my name being called out. I was told to come up to the stage and collect my prize. I didn’t know what to expect. The man then handed me a cheque for one thousand euro and a five hundred euro voucher for paint and art supplies for the centre. I was so overwhelmed with joy, that I was stuck for words. When the prize-giver asked me did I want to say anything I just stared at him for a minute in awe... I then said thanks to everyone who helped me and to Youthreach for supplying the materials. Afterwards I went out to a nice restaurant with my family to celebrate my win. I am so glad I took part in the competition as...

Media Influences on America

...Andrea Dawkins Hum186: Media Influences on America Usually when you think about music the first thing that comes to mind is entertainment. Music is not just bound by entertainment; music can also be inspirational, motivational, and educational. Inspirational music compels the listener to perform an activity or at least make the listener believe in themselves. Such songs as When you believe by Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston and Never would of made it by Marvin Sapp provided excellent examples of inspirational, for they give the listener hope where there might not be any. Motivational music has the ability to lift us up, make us smile, encourage, motivate, and teach us valuable life lessons. Such songs as I feel good by James Brown and I like to move it move it by Reel 2 Reel motivate people to get into that desired mood to be able to perform certain tasks, such as work or any other extra-curricular activity. Last but not least music has dramatically affected the way we educate ourselves. Educational music is both entertaining and informative. Research shows that children learn better through music than through almost any other medium. Through music many listeners are able to comprehend as well as remember what is trying to be taught better. Some educational pieces would include The ABCs, Bunny Song (How to tie your shoe), and Why do leaves change colors. These songs provide children with a familiar and comfortable way of learning. In closing, music has multiple purposes;...

...Question 1: If the game was played just once the scenario for suppliers would be very similar to the prisoner’s dilemma case we discussed in game theory. Here both buyer and suppliers have dominant strategy. It would have been beneficial for both of suppliers if they could coordinate but as in this case they can’t, safest way is to bid at lowest cost. From buyer’s perspective, he will make maximum profit if he goes with lowest bid so that even in case of crisis, if supplier decides not to fix, buyer would have enough scope to cover the fixing cost. So, there is very less probability that Buyer will award contract to higher bid and any of supplier will bear the fixing cost. Decision tree & Payoff matrix: supplier A Supplier B $11 $14 $11 Allocations 50 100 Allocations 50 0 0 50 $14 100 50 Buyer Crisis Fixed A Yes $11 Yes No Buyer No Yes $14 Yes NO B No In the above case buyer would choose...

Delinquency

...Theories CJS/240 Sunday Septemeber11th, 2011 Individual Theories There are so many reason why young people commit crimes in today’s society whereas others strive to excel. Many of these reasons tend to vary depending on the home that the youth grew up in or around, or even how smart or challenged the youth is, however; all of these factors are caused by different settings , and consequences or punishments need to be put into place to keep the youth from becoming a criminal. Just because a youth has grown up in poor situations or circumstances there is no reason for the youth to become a criminal because of their history. There are so many theories that are put into place to fit each reason or excuse that a young person gives as to why a crime or criminal act is attempted or committed. According to the routine activities theory a young person will commit a crime if they know that the opportunity is there. A teen might be aware that there is a home that is easy to get into because there are not police officers around, and it would be a way for them to obtain some cash since they are broke and need to come up with money quick. The idea of this theory is that since a teenager realizes that his or her needs fit the opportunity that has become available to them that they will commit the crime. I seriously believe that this theory has completely forgot that just because a young person does not have a lot of supervision, and could have some poor initial morals, that they see the...

Muscle Binds

...other pleasures except sport and it occasions more health and social problems than it seems. Being an expensive short-lasting fashion, exercises make people forget about everything except their beauty, even their own death does not matter anymore. They train the bodies but neglect the minds. According to the author it’s better to be a couch potato but not a self-righteous young person with rippling muscles. The title of the article reflects the contents of the article in full measure: one is bound to train not to have cellulite, one is bound to train to follow the fashion, one is bound to train to come to term with oneself, and finally, one is bound to train to be healthy. As the article is written in ironic way it is quite easy to read but the real sense is caught only by the end. It makes the reader understand that he/she is either a silly “hunk” or a lazy “potato”. The passage is written in a very chatty informal publicistic style to draw reader’s attention, to persuade them to get the author’s point of view and to entertain them. It is chosen for the target audience who consists of young people. The title ‘Muscle binds’ contains an oxymoron as the word ‘muscle’ has a positive connotation and is associated with health and the word ‘binds’ is negatively connotated, its meaning is ‘tightened’. At the very beginning the readers swallow the bait that makes it easier to convince them of the truth of the author’s words. The vocabulary is emotionally coloured (‘oldsters’...

Cultural Observation

...thought was that watching young people surely could not generate an entire four-page report. You see, I have never taken an interest in watching people that I did not have any direct contact with. I took the escalator down to the first level and I ordered some Chinese food and a diet coke. I found an empty table and proceeded to let the observation begin. Much to my surprise, I began to pay close attention to a group of very young white kids at a table about three rows up from where I was sitting. The first thing I noticed about them is that they each had body piercings and tattoos covered most of their arms. I wondered how they would feel about the dramatic body art they were advertising in about twenty years from now. Next, I saw two young white boys sporting blonde spiked Mohawk hairstyles standing around just outside a video game store. They appeared to be staring very intently at something on the back of one of the games that they each had purchased. This only lasted as long as it took for them to notice three young black girls, who could not have been more then thirteen or fourteen at the most, as they walked by. These girls wore the most revealing and tight little shorts I think I have ever seen on anyone before. When the girls saw that the boys were looking at them, surprisingly, they seemed to get offended. I wondered why since they were showing off everything that should be left to the imagination. Lastly I noticed a smaller group of young girls, maybe thirteen, they...
