Faith in Darkness Throughout history, faith has played an important role in humanity. In the autobiography Evidence Not Seen: A Woman’s Miraculous Faith in the Jungles of World War II, Darlene Deibler Rose writes about how her faith in God helped sustain her through her many years of deprivation and darkness as a missionary. Recounting her life, Rose writes about her beginning years as a new bride and missionary traveling with her husband, Reverend C. Russell Deibler, to New Guinea in 1938 to her liberation from a Japanese prison camp in 1945. During these many years, Rose encounters the horrific effects of World War II and learns to rely on God to be a light in the midst of darkness. Although the beginning of her work as a missionary seemed difficult, it would become worse with time. She writes about how she had to encounter the horrors of the Japanese prison camp such as “suffering, hunger, deprivations of every kind, forced labor, bombings, disease, psychological pressures, death, and lonely graves” (pg. 69). These horrors had a great effect on her, and she had to rely on her faith to keep going. Furthermore, when she was moved to the isolation center run by the Kempeitai, she dealt with the horrors of the Japanese prison camp and new horrors. Due to the presumption that Rose was an American spy, the Kempeitai locked her in an isolation cell, and “for seventy-two hours [she] wasn’t allowed to relieve [herself]” (pg. 126). During this time, she writes about how she had to pray to keep herself going, and she was eventually able to relieve herself.
