Henry Sy, Sr. (born December 25, 1924) is a Chinese Filipino businessman with interests in retailing, real estate, hospitality, banking, mining, education including healthcare services. He pioneered the establishment of SM Malls, anchored by Shoemart Department Store and Supermarket earning him the title; the Philippines' Retail King. He is the chairman of SM Prime Holdings, Inc., the holding corporation for all his business interests in his vast business empire. In 2011, Forbes Magazine listed him as the no. 1 billionaire in the Philippines.
* Early life
Henry Sy was born to a poor family in Xiamen, China on December 25,1924. He is the son of Henry H. Sy. He immigrated to the Philippines and got his start by selling rejected and overrun shoes from Tondo.[2]
He completed his secondary education in a school now known as Chiang Kai Shek College [3] and earned his Associate of Arts degree in Commercial Studies at Far Eastern University in 1950.[4] * Foray into business
In 1958, Sy established a small shoe store in Quiapo, Manila that marked the establishment of SM Prime Holdings.[5] In November 1972, the small shoe store became SM Quiapo, SM's first standalone department store.
On December 25, 1985, he established his first SM Supermall, SM City North EDSA.[6]
He is the Philippines' richest man, gaining $5 billion in 2010, amid the global financial crisis. The huge gain was due to his holding company, SM Investments Corporation, which has interests in Banco de Oro, inter alia. Forbes magazine's 2008 list of 40 wealthiest Filipinos, revealed the Sy family's net worth was $6.2 billion. Earlier, he was the second wealthiest individual in the Philippines, next to Bill Gates, and (as of 2010) 201st in the world.
Sy is considered a tai-pan. The Sy group is the operator of Banco de Oro and owner of Chinabank. In 2006, he bought the remaining 66% of Equitable PCI Bank, the Philippines third largest lender, in which he already had a 34% stake, and merged it with Banco de Oro in 2007. The merger created the Philippines' second largest financial institution with resources of close to $17 billion. Rumors say that the Sy family has a personal stake of $4 billion in these three banks, although there is no sufficient evidence to strongly substantiate that.
Sy[ sold his 11% stake in San Miguel Corporation, Southeast Asia's largest food and beverage conglomerate for $680 million.
Henry Sy, Sr., was named "Management Man of the Year"[when?] by the Makati Business Club in 1999 and was conferred an Honorary Doctorate in Business Management by De La Salle University in January of that year. He organized the SM Foundation Inc., which helps underprivileged and promising young Filipinos. Several of his children hold senior management positions in his companies, although he has groomed daughter Teresita Sy-Coson and his grandchildren Hailey Sy-Coson, Darcie Sy, Patrick Carlo Sy, Cheska Sy, Sarita Sy, Samantha Ong-Sy and Josiah Sy as his successors. Sy's holding company, SM Investments Corporation, has consistently been cited as one of the Philippines best-managed companies. On May 20, 2006, the SM Mall of Asia, built in the reclamation area of Pasay City, was opened to the public. It is the sixth-largest mall in the world.

Henry Sy and John Gokongwei

...Case Background Henry Sy and John Gokongwei were both born very poor. This situation, one may conclude, served as a blessing for the two most celebrated entrepreneurs in the Philippines on their journey to wealth.                 Shoeless and with only clothes on his back, Henry Sy started his entrepreneurial career by tending at his father’s sari-sari store in Cebu. But Henry dreamed of something big for his future. He dreamed of having his own business to provide him enough money. In 1945, he put up a small shoe store in Carriedo, Quiapo. From then on, that humble shoe store became Shoemart (commonly known as “SM”). Since there was a constant pouring of capital back into this venture, he then expanded into textiles and household goods and was then opening outlets to selected parts of the country, centering at the Metropolis.                 On the other hand, John Go (“kongwei” meaning “bright” was suffixed later to his name later) started his road to success by hawking wares in Cebu. This led to his dream of building his own retailing kingdom. He first started by trading and manufacturing corn starch in 1955 and has soon expanded into supplying groceries and animal foodstuffs in bulk. Later, he ventured also in textiles, banking and real estate, hotels and shopping complex developments.                 The abrupt expansion of the enterprises of the two business tycoons marked the start of a period of transition for the business empire built over the past three decades......

The owner, Henry Sy, Sr. started his business with a shoe store called Shoe Mart. He had to travel back and forth to New York and Manila for 40 hours via propeller plane in order to get supplies. Little by little, his business grew and became SM Department Store. SM has been a part of the lives of many Filipinos and is constantly doing so. Up until now, SM continuously expands their horizons not only the field of retail and malls but also in banking, real estate, and tourism. They introduce new and innovative ways...

College Uneducation

...Andrei Moira P. Tiosejo August 14, 2014 201211578 MWF 3:00-4:00 “A Perspective of a College Student” In the essay, “College Uneducation” by Jorge Bocobo, he challenges the idea that most college students are actually being educated and taught how to think critically. This essay also tackles about the students, who developed the lack of natural skills and abilities to reason, to choose, and to believe. As I enter college way back 2012, I have observed a lot of things that make the students “uneducated”. As Jorge Bocobo emphasizes “Book Worship”, I suddenly realized that this is really a fact because many students nowadays choose books as their sufficient source of information, including the reasoning and point of views, where it must be the students who will provide. I too, admit that sometimes, I just based my point of views on books because I’m too lazy to think of my own perspective but I realized that I should not always depend myself on books because I trust myself that I can also think greater than the lessons in the book. I’m not telling you to stop reading. Of course, it’s also ideal to get idea or facts from whatever source we utilize, simply because we also need to be open-minded for some knowledge which will be helpful in our studies as students. But there’s a great disparity between open-mindedness from dependency and originality from plagiarism. What I mean to say is that, books should not corrupt ourselves. Rather, it should serve as a catalyst......
