In the book One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Ken Kesey perfectly constructs every aspect of the story from the characters to the plot to the setting of the story to show the injustice that disadvantaged people face in society. By having the story centered around patients in a mental asylum, Kesey is able to show not what the disadvantaged suffer through every day because of their existing, but also how societies’ “normal” people treat and view people less fortunate than themselves. The book makes you wonder, who truly is the one that needs the help. The disadvantaged people, or the ones that choose to ignore their pleas and abuse them. The only time he is mentioned, is when he is giving out tours of the facilities to different groups of people. The PR man is very fond of pointing out that the ward has come very far in improving conditions for the patients. When giving the tours, he would go through his prepared routine of describing how the ward used to be an awful place where the patients would be abused through various means. Chief Bromden is introduced with, “They don’t bother not talking out loud about their hate secrets when I’m nearby because they think I’m deaf and dumb. Everybody thinks so. I’m cagey enough to fool them that much” (3). Chief Bromden is a character that feigns being deaf, and he seldom gets involved with the ward politics. By having Chief Bromden as a character that is deaf and doesn’t really interfere with the story, Kesey has created a character that we, as the reader, can identify with.
