Who Is the True Hero in the Kite Runner?

Being a hero is not something everyone can be. One has to make sacrifices for the better of others. If one is not willing to make sacrifices, they are not strong enough to be a hero. Specific heroes are hard to find. Khaled Hosseini’s “The Kite Runner”, revolves around characters portraying heroism. Although the story revolves around many characters showcasing the theme of heroism, the character that has been the hero throughout the story is Hassan. This is proved by the sacrifices Hassan made for Amir, Hassan accepting his mother back into his life and Hassan protecting Baba’s house after he left to America. Firstly, Hassan is the true hero of the story because he was constantly there for Amir. Hassan was loyal and was willing to do anything for Amir: “For you a thousand times over!” (Hosseini, 71). This quote specifically portrays that Hassan was willing to do anything for Amir, as he said he will do anything a thousand times over for him. This is a powerful quote because this exemplifies Hassan being heroic through his loyalty for Amir. Hassan also was willing to do anything for Amir without expecting anything back from. Hassan also proved his heroism when he stood up for Amir against Assef: “If you make a move, they’ll have to change your nickname from ‘Assef the Ear Eater’ to ‘One Eyed Assef’, because I have this rock pointed at your left eye” (Hosseini, 45). This quote portrays Hassan’s heroism because Hassan stood up against Assef. Amir was being threatened by Assef and Hassan was courageous enough to point a loaded slingshot at Assef telling him to leave them alone. This is also important because Hassan is a Hazara and Assef is a Pashtun. Pashtuns are the higher class and have more authority over Hazaras. Even though Assef was older, stronger and a Pashtun, Hassan still stood up against him to protect Amir showcasing his heroism. This

...Book Review of ‘The Kite Runner’ “For you, a thousand times over”, this sentence said by Hassan to Amir has been on my mind since I finished reading the novel. The story took place in the 70s in Afghanistan. Amir was a child of a wealthy family and Hassan was the son of Amir family`s servant, Ali. They played and grew up together; the strong friendship bonded them like brothers. As can be seen from the novel and the sentence at the beginning, Hassan was willing to do anything for Amir whenever Amir encountered any troubles. Nevertheless, Amir made a terrible mistake when he watched and stood by, while Hassan was raped by Assef after winning the unprecedented grand kite game. In order to drive Hassan out of the house, Amir put his watch under Hassan`s pillow, implying that Hassan had stolen it. When Russia invaded Afghanistan, Amir left his hometown with his father and fled to Pakistan. In 1988, Amir and his family/father had a nice life when Amir graduated, having attended a public college in California. Afterwards Amir became a famous novelist. However, Amir suffered agonies of remorse as he could not forgive himself for his unatoned sin for betraying Hassan. ...Book Banning In a country founded on freedom and the right to exercise that freedom, most Americans are unaware that books are banned in certain areas and or schools across the United States. Book banning is the censorship and removal of written materials due to objections from a group or individual person, based on personal views, of material and content. Book banning has been a part of society since before books first started being mass produced and distributed. Between the years 2000 and 2009 over 5,000 book banning challenges were reported to the American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF). Over 1,500 were challenged due to sexual explicitness. Over 2,500 were initiated by a parent or guardian and nearly 2,000 were initiated by a school (ALA.org. Banned and Challenged Books. Frequently Challenged Books). However, it seems that in any situation on the topic of book banning only explains the reasons behind the removal of the material.
