In other words, it’s the message the author wants you to realize from the story. There are multiple themes in A Thousand Splendid Suns and The Kite Runner, both written by Khaled Hosseini. Putting together these stories, I thought finding hope, and fighting for what you believe in as the themes. Hope is the feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen. Hope in A Thousand Splendid Suns is happening to very few people, considering the Taliban, the war, and the bombing of family and friends. You never know what is going to happen next or if there will ever be a tomorrow. For Laila, she has had a very rough life and even worse, having her parents blown up right in front of her. Not being loved your entire life by your own mother is something everyone wants to avoid, but Laila was one of the unfortunate. She only had attention from her dad and then she became alone from the bombing. She married at a youth life to a man who was three times her age who was very abusive to Laila and his other wife, Mariam. ...Book Review of ‘The Kite Runner’ “For you, a thousand times over”, this sentence said by Hassan to Amir has been on my mind since I finished reading the novel. The story took place in the 70s in Afghanistan. Amir was a child of a wealthy family and Hassan was the son of Amir family`s servant, Ali. They played and grew up together; the strong friendship bonded them like brothers. As can be seen from the novel and the sentence at the beginning, Hassan was willing to do anything for Amir whenever Amir encountered any troubles. Nevertheless, Amir made a terrible mistake when he watched and stood by, while Hassan was raped by Assef after winning the unprecedented grand kite game. In order to drive Hassan out of the house, Amir put his watch under Hassan`s pillow, implying that Hassan had stolen it. When Russia invaded Afghanistan, Amir left his hometown with his father and fled to Pakistan. In 1988, Amir and his family/father had a nice life when Amir graduated, having attended a public college in California. Afterwards Amir became a famous novelist. However, Amir suffered agonies of remorse as he could not forgive himself for his unatoned sin for betraying Hassan. At the end, Amir started his journey of redemption and came back to his home town and saved Sohrab (son of Hassan) from the Taliban after he received a phone call from Rahim Khan. ...Book Banning In a country founded on freedom and the right to exercise that freedom, most Americans are unaware that books are banned in certain areas and or schools across the United States. Book banning is the censorship and removal of written materials due to objections from a group or individual person, based on personal views, of material and content. Book banning has been a part of society since before books first started being mass produced and distributed. Between the years 2000 and 2009 over 5,000 book banning challenges were reported to the American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF). Over 1,500 were challenged due to sexual explicitness. Over 2,500 were initiated by a parent or guardian and nearly 2,000 were initiated by a school (ALA.org. Banned and Challenged Books. Frequently Challenged Books). However, it seems that in any situation on the topic of book banning only explains the reasons behind the removal of the material. But, the rules and guidelines for banning written materials has never been formally established. According to a 2011 Journal of Law and Education from the Jefferson Law Book Company there had been more than 250 attempts at book banning by school districts in the previous four years in 31 states in the U.S. Due to lack of resistance and reduced media awareness more that 85% of book banning goes unreported.
