“Who said we all have to Talk alike,” by Wilma Elizabeth McDaniel, “A child in Prison camp,” by Shiyuze Takashima, and the “Merchant of Venice” by William Shakespeare all share common examples of discrimination. Discrimination is the cause of hundreds of problems in our society and causes large amounts of damage to people’s lives. But I believe that Neffie from “Who said we all have to talk alike” reacted the most reasonably to this discrimination presented against her than every other character in these stories because she was kind and caring despite what happened to her, she kept her emotions in check , and she persevered through her troubles.
The kindness and the care that Neffie showed towards everyone despite what they did to her shows …show more content…
The discrimination she received was painful but she stated, “The worman has already paid for my fare. I felt that I had to give her a few months’ service if I could stand the punishment at all” (83). This shows how much Neffie was willing to take from Beryl because she didn’t want Beryl to waste her money on her. But, because of her speech, Neffie knew that she would be constantly discriminated against by Beryl, but despite this, she persevered through it for a few months so Beryl would not have wasted her money on her. This discrimination eventually led to Neffie being fired, when Beryl said, “They say dorter and orter with regularity. This pattern must be eradicated immediately” (85). But, because of the perseverance that Neffie had with Beryl, she learned a lot of things about the people around her. She even stated that “it was an eye-opener for me, hurt me too” (86). Because of what she learned about the people outside of her small community, her experience of the world outside of her country showed her that not everyone was like her. This made her think and despite the discrimination she received, she resolved to work harder despite her

...Even though we do not constantly think about it, language changes slightly every day. United States as a large in diversity country continues to face new challenges with language as times continue to turn. English is categorized as a world language, because approximately 400 million people speak English as their first language ever day (Goshgarian, 2011).In addition to that English is taught in majority of non-speaking English countries as a second language. Combination of all different cultures and dialects shape new English language (Goshgarian, 2011). Vocabulary is one way to measure this linguistic shift. Usually new words are added to dictionary when they became recognized and used by many people. I believe we should accept cultural adaptations and diversity and let dictionary illustrate current trends and represent our present culture. In his essay “Do you speak American” Robert MacNeil analyzes the English language and revels many dialects that culturally define us. Essay based on a documentary shows evolution of the way Americans speak, and what influence on that have an ethnicity, geography and social status. MacNeil points in his writing that Americans do not at all talk alike, but opposite they talk completely different from one another, as an example he presents a name of a sub sandwich which name depends on the place you order it (Mac Neil, 2011).One of two American linguistic critics group presented in essay, the “descriptivist” agrees that changes in a...

Gender and Speech Differences

...between the two sexes. Do men and women speak differently, or do they speak alike? Do men speak to command attention and authority? Are women more likely to speak in a more deferential tone? Are there any notable differences in the speaking styles of women and men? In antiquity, the answer was a simple and fascinating ‘yes’. In his essay “Sex Differences”, Ronald Macaulay believes there is no differences as such that affects language acquisition, although social factors interfere in the way they both talk. In contrast, Janet Holmes expresses in her essay “Women talk too much” that language is biased because it is men who have positions of power and seek authority, who judges when talk is too much, when its appropriate, and that women assert themselves less when speech is more valued. As we progress, we shall examine more closely their positions and expose the nature of their claims. In fact, the use and style in language has no bearing on one’s gender. The way one communicates with others has much to do with personal life experiences, self-image, and the overall make up of our personality and character. According to Macaulay, women are more straightforward and use the language in a simpler manner while men tend to be more creative. First of all, men are associated with toughness and aggression, sometimes boldness whereas women are associated with sweetness, being innocent, shy and loyal. These talks are not to be used to judge each of the sexes although in certain occasions...

Biblical World View Essay

... WORLD VIEW ESSAY L26463326 BIBL 104-D82-LUO MAY 5TH, 2014 INTRODUCTION: Opinions are everywhere, everyone has one. This essay will attempt to explain one opinion or worldview of Romans: 1-8. There is so much discussed in this book. Paul touched on so many different topics and made descriptive points on what we as Christians are supposed to do, how we are supposed to live and walk in our day to day life. This essay will break them down in several different categories; The Natural World, Human Identity, Human Relationships, and Culture. It will be one sided and the writers opinion only. THE NATURAL WORLD: God created this world in only a few short days. With a few words, He spoke everything we know into existence. We know this to be true through God’s Word. It is the inspired word of God, God breathed His Word into His chosen writers. The prophetic word that was told of in the Bible, is what helps us know that the Bible is truth. The natural world is sin for us. There are so many things that lure us to sin. Jesus is our way to forgiveness. The natural world is dangerous, and this is some of what Paul was trying to help people understand in his writings. Everyday we have a choice to take the right path or we can choose to take the wrong one. Either way we go, there are consequences to our decisions. If we choose the right path, then we have salvation and mercy. When we choose the wrong path we have eternal damnation, unless we find our way...

Servant Leadership

...Servant Leadership Rick Purvis Indiana Wesleyan University Servant Leadership Though there are many styles of leadership, servant leadership suggests that possessing certain quality’s will allow the leader to lead with authority and not just power. In this paper, we will examine servant leadership and how servant leadership is used in a business setting. We will also compare and contrast an example of servant leadership using the Maxwell leadership bible and Jim Beam Brands in Frankfort KY. Finally, we will discuss how Rick Purvis uses servant leadership in his place of employment. Now, lets get started by describing what servant leadership is. Servant leadership is described in an essay published by Robert K. Greenleaf. In his essay, Robert Greenleaf said: The servant-leader is servant first… It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead. That person is sharply different from one who is leader first, perhaps because of the need to assuage an unusual power drive or to acquire material possessions…The leader-first and the servant-first are two extreme types. Between them there are shadings and blends that are part of the infinite variety of human nature (www.greenleaf.org, 2008). Servant Leaders are respected, listened to, and valued, even though they may not manage others (Davies, 2006). In short, servant leaders are individuals that lead by asking how they can help. They...

The Importance Of Online Education

...Research Essay Often, graduation requirements are in conflict with students’ elective interests. As a result, many students graduate without the opportunity to take classes that match their interests or career goals. One solution might be to allow students to take some classes entirely online, but there are benefits and problems associated with online coursework. High school students, in addition to their daily course schedule, should be able to earn credit for some classes entirely online because it increases intrigue in learning and school, increases academic prosperity, and faculty won’t lose their jobs. Earning credit for classes online increases intrigue for learning and school. Online education is increasing in demand, classes are giving...

Nature Versus Nurture

...their developing understanding of the worlds in which they find themselves. Cooing usually starts at around the three month stage (Karmiloff Smith 1994) and the response of the adult…can act as a ‘reward’ encouraging thesis early attempts at sound making and interaction” (David Goouch, Powell & Abbott,2003:821) This essay will discuss the acquisition of language in the first two years of a child’s life, looking at different theories and approaches that have been explored over recent years. The essay aims to distinguish if language acquisition is an in built skill which we are all born with or if it is a learned skill which we acquire as we interact with the world around us. Skinner (1957) put forward the argument in favour of the debate that language is developed through nurture- saying that language is a learnt behaviour. Skinner provided that children simply repeat utterances they have heard, this implies that language acquisition is a simple case of rote learning(Ambridge & Lieven,2011:242). He believed that much of what we learn is from the environment around us, he used his theory of operant conditioning to explain how and why we have developed the ability to communicate through spoken words. Operant conditioning, to put it very simply suggests that if a behaviour is rewarded the subject will continue to behave that way. In the case of language acquisition , a child will say a word correctly and be rewarded. For example if a child is able to say the word “banana”...

Journalism

...is said to be as old as history itself. The Marxists back in the days were in favour of the whole idea of having a revolution socially, which depended on the working class. They wanted the idea of having a social revolution not to be dependent on the rulers. In this day and age, ideology can now be seen as the structure of ones belief from a certain perspective. The main medium we use to communicate and our language determines how such a presentation takes place. As we go on in this essay, we will see that there are quite a number of linguistic features which enable the writer of story or text convince those reading about their point of view. With the help of ideology, we are able to produce values and meaning for a specified readership, and this is done mainly from repetition and the way points of view and interpretation are presented. Facts that are generally seen as complex are presented in a way that helps the viewpoint of the readership to be structured and also allows them to create versions of the world in a microspecific manner. The information given explicitly does not only influence the media contents of the audience but it also influences the absences. The term hegemony is used by Gramsci and he says that “…..the ruling He talks about how those that roledont only make ideology on others forceful but how they provide different principles which later mould ideaological elements into something for the world to see(Berkovitz. 1997. Eminem and Women

...Eminem and Women MUSI 1002 – FINAL PAPER, FALL 2014 December 2, 2014 In this day and age, the molding of children is one of if not the most important task of what a parent may have to face. Many parents have to experience the unpleasant task of having to filter between what to allow or not allow their innocent children to be exposed to. This is due to the fact that the media now plays a huge role on how a child will grow up and what a child will think is right and wrong. Factors such a famous celebrities and music play some of the most influential roles. This becomes a problem when music, such as Rap and Hip-Hop, portray certain issues and ideas in a very negative way (Watkins, 85); a way in which a child may completely misunderstand and therefore take away a very unhealthy idea of it. Not only can a genre be at fault in an instance like this, but also an artist who actually allows to put out such messages and ideas into the world. One of the most controversial topics in the Rap industry is the topic about women and how they should be portrayed. Eminem, an artist who is heavily criticized about his degrading and demoralizing of women in his lyrics and music videos, is an example of such artist (Hess, 490). He is very well known and also loved for his lyrics and music videos that represent women as sexual objects encourage domestic violence against women, and attack women of prestige and power within the social elite world. Eminem’s style of music consists of Rap. The...

Short Story Profile

...LaTisha Jordan Humanities 201 Professor Sean Doyle October 1, 2013 Short Essay 1 – Story Profile: Amy Bloom By-and-by In Amy Bloom’s By-and-by, I considered the primary conflict in this short story to what happened to Anne as a result of being missing and last seen with a serial killer. Bloom presents this when she notes that Anne was with a serial killer during her disappearance. It led me to believe that someone is dead and there will be an issue of how they died instead of if they actually did or not. The climax could be when Eugene Trask had his trial and the details of what happened to Anne was revealed. Bloom had a way to show tension and unease about Anne’s disappearance when Mrs. Warburg considers that Anne may be very well alive and Mr. Warburg hurries her off the phone when she tells the narrator this theory. Another way that Bloom builds suspense is by noting specific details of what happens to the brain cells and heart when death is approaching. This gives the reader a clear indication that a body is decomposing somewhere in the midst. Bloom indirectly characterizes (show method) the characters in this story. In Anne’s case, you can get a depiction of how Anne was from her mother, Mrs. Warburg. She noted that Anne was “her mother’s daughter”. She also noted that Anne loves glamorous when she said, “We love glamorous”. This method was also true in Eugene Trask’s case because he was said to be a “worthless piece of shit” by his sister, Rose. This was kind of...

A Smokers World

...sun beats down on your face and you see all of your friends standing around outside of the union doors. You approach them as they laugh and converse amongst themselves. When you finally get there they give you a warm greeting and you realize you are out of cigarettes. You proceed to ask for one and as your friend is pulling you out a cigarette he proceeds to talk trash and give you a hard time for not having any. As you put it to your mouth you realize you do not have a lighter. When you ask for a lighter, you get a specific response “Oh you want me to smoke it for you too?” As you light the cigarette, you begin to inhale and feel the thick, deliciously deadly smoke enter your lungs. You feel the burning sensation all over you. As you continue to ingest the horrible gas, you and your friends continue to talk and laugh. Then you slowly begin to realize that smoking is about more than just an addiction. It is about bringing your friends together. Smokers can identify themselves with other smokers and find similar interests; it’s like a sports team, except not nearly as healthy. In this essay I will allow readers to understand and identify that smokers are not just people they are complete strangers bound together by an action that brings them unity and shows that smoking is not just a subculture that it stands for something greater than itself. Smoker Slang To understand a culture or a specific race of people one must first learn the said people’s language. The case is the same...

Industrial Revolution Changes

...William Feola Topic 4 Essay 2/23/2016 In the middle of the nineteenth century, European societies were going through tremendous changes due to politicization of the ordinary, helped by the French Revolution, and the Industrial Revolution. During these changes and challenges, intellectuals and political activists proposed different approaches to making society function better. Different bodies of thoughts were proposed and political organizations that supported different ideologies were created. These groups and organizations stemmed from liberalism, feminism, romanticism and Social Darwinism. These groups, the liberalists, feminists, romanticists and the Social Darwinists, had to try to cope with the rapid modernization of the west precipitated by the Industrial Revolution. In this essay we are going to talk about how each group was able to cope with the rapid modernization and how they were able to face the changes and challenges. First of all, we saw liberalism try to cope with the rapid modernization of the west precipitated by the Industrial Revolution. These liberals thought that human life and society could progress without having violent revolutions or relying on tradition. Non-violent approaches to changing society is called liberalism. The liberals during the time of the Industrial Revolution believed that individuals had the power to reason and that they are rational. In other words, it means they are capable of bettering themselves without destroying the...

Essay on Simon Van Booy´S "Save as Many as You Ruin"

...Essay on Simon Van Booy´s "Save as Many as You ruin" by Sune Espersen. The main character in the short story is Gerard, he is living in Manhattan and has an eight-year-old daughter named Lucy. He must have been growing up in England as it is mentioned that his prep school was English. Gerard is a handsome man, probably between 30 and 40 years. Gerard is a single father, Lucy's mother Issy left them when Lucy was very young and she went to Los Angeles to become an actor. Lucy´s mother Issy died 4 years ago, she was found floating in a pool, Gerard went to her funeral in Los Angeles. In the beginning of the text we find out that it seems to be important to Gerard that he makes his life extraordinary and he want to be a person who stands out from the crowd. Gerard's reflections creates a very glorious, overwhelming atmosphere, because he thinks of his own life compared with the many other people who lived before him. The atmosphere in this part of the text also tells us that something is going to happen in Gerard's life. In the beginning he also talks about the past, he talks about his old, English prep teacher Hetherington who won a medal at the Olympics while Adolf Hitler watched, and he talks about the second World War: "Millions were about to be killed as teenage Hetherington crossed the finish line. A few years later, children walked into gas ovens after a long journey from home." - P.1/l.15-17. Just things from the past, which probably is an introduction to when he...

Having to respond in the negative, I was, nonetheless, “intrigued” by the idea of a collection of essays that would form a source of stimulating ideas or thoughts that could be thoroughly examined in the EFL classroom, discussed and debated in free conversation, and perhaps, ultimately, lead to a significant growth in the exchange of information between cultures – via the printed page. From this rationale, then, there issues an explanation for the title, Mind Speaks to Mind, which itself is an “exchange of information” between the editor and Edward Hoagland in his essay, “On Essays”! I Want a Wife

...(Narrative Essay) JUDY BRADY I Want a Wife (1971) Judy Brady’s essay became an instant classic when it appeared in 1971 in the premier issue of the feminist magazine Ms. As you read, analyze the definitions of “husband” and “wife” that Brady uses, and consider why this essay became so powerful in the 1970s. I belong to that classification of people known as wives. I am A Wife. And, not altogether incidentally, I am a mother. Not too long ago a male friend of mine appeared on the scene fresh from a recent divorce. He had one child, who is, of course, with his ex-wife. He is looking for another wife. As I thought about him while I was ironing one evening, it suddenly occurred to me that I, too, would like to have a wife. Why do I want a wife? I would like to go back to school so that I can become economically independent, support myself, and, if need be, support those dependent upon me. I want a wife who will work and send me to school. And while I am going to school I want a wife to take care of my children. I want a wife to keep track of the children’s doctor and dentist appointments. And to keep track of mine, too. I want a wife to make sure my children eat properly and are kept clean. I want a wife who will wash the children’s clothes and keep them mended. I want a wife who is a good nurturant attendant to my children, who arranges for their schooling, makes sure that they have an adequate social life with their peers, takes them to the park, the zoo, etc. I want a...
