...adolescents. School aged kids grow slower than infants. They have a consistent growth. Food habits are established during this stage. School aged kids will usually eat between four and five times including snacks. It’s important to have a healthy diet and eat nutritious snacks. Snacks make up about 1/3 of a child’s total calorie intake per day. Growing and active children need snacks and should fall under the five food groups. With the rise of childhood obesity, children need to be taught how to choose healthy choice when eating. Snacks should meet energy and nutrient needs. Eating sugar is not going to be nutritious or give them lasting energy. Parents set the example for healthy eating. Both diet and exercise is important with school aged kids. With the technology advancement these days, it’s easy for a child to sit at a computer, in front of a tv, or with a tablet for hours. Children need to be active for at least an hour or more every day. Childhood diabetes is becoming more common. As obesity rates in children have climbed, so has the incidence of Type 2 diabetes, and a new study adds another worry: the disease progresses more rapidly in children than in adults and is harder to treat. This is why a child’s diet and exercise patterns are important to establish now rather than later in adult years, when it may be too late. Nutrient needs do not change for boys and girls until around the ages of 8 or 9. The start of sexual maturation can begin at this age. Each...

Critical Thinking

...The weight loss industry is making millions every year on Americans. So why are so many Americans continuing to gain weight at increasing numbers? Could it be diets and weight loss supplements are detrimental to the overall health of so many Americans? The unhealthy reliance on appetite suppressants and the restrictions of certain food groups generally don’t work in the long term and can even be dangerous. The low cost of diets and the promise of fast results can certainly encourage many Americans to diet. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention more than 20 million Americans use dietary supplements, including multivitamins, minerals and herbs. The rise of diet supplements from 42% in 2006 to 62% in 2010 has only fueled the growth of dietary supplements and diet plans to a multimillion dollar industry (Center for Disease Control, 2011). The weight loss industry encourages individuals to improve their overall health by dieting. The industry approach suggest people can eat poorly and just take a diet supplement and have the same results of someone who eats well, exercise and takes care of their health by getting regular checkups. This is farthest from the truth according to a CNN report. Dr. Roberta Anding, a registered dietitian and director of sports nutrition at Texas Children Hospital, stated “while some supplements can be helpful in losing weight they are not match to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. “ Studies haven’t shown any significant difference...

As your physician, I would like to share my concerns about feeding your baby. Breastfeeding is the best feeding for your baby. I recommend it for as long as possible, preferably during the entire first year of life. In addition to giving the proper nutrition, it offers protection from disease, and fosters that special closeness between you and your baby. However, if you are unable or choose not to breastfeed—or if you are breastfeeding and have decided to switch your baby to infant formula—I have recommended what I believe to be the best infant formula for your baby. My recommendation is based on a number of factors—the nutrition the formula provides, the ingredients and quality of the formula, and how closely the formula is patterned after breast milk. Also, if I feel your baby has any special feeding needs, I’ve taken this into account when coming to my decision. After careful consideration, I’ve recommended the infant formula that I feel best meets the nutritional needs of your baby for the first full year of life. You can accept my recommendation with complete confidence. Contents [pic] ...

It seems that some parents and teachers see some symptoms of ADHD through behavioral problems and are quick to judge that a child must have this disorder. Some may even be quick to give medication. In most cases when it comes to young children, in my opinion, it would be better to have a well-planned out schedule to be able to maintain everyday events and activities at home and school. ...SCI/241 Sunday-April 1, 2012 Kerri Kislin Tracking food intakes is essential to determine if a person is consuming adequate nutrients over periods. Tracking intakes helps to get on track and stay on track with healthy nutritional diets. Keeping track helps to determine if adjustments made to the diet are sufficient to achieve optimal nutrient amounts. After making the adjustments a food intake tracker will help to determine if more adjustments need made later or if I am on the right track. A food diary is an excellent way to track food intakes and calorie intakes. I input my food intakes from Monday to Wednesday and compared them with a previous intake analysis from six weeks ago. The new analysis was encouraging, my nutritional intakes improved drastically especially in the area of protein which was a previous struggle. My vegetable intake has increased to a good level; my whole grain intake has increased to a good level, and my protein intake increased.
