Why Did Judas Betray God Essay

Why Did Judas Do It?
There are several theories as to why Judas betrayed Jesus. This paper will attempt to examine some of the theories such as political motive, demon possession, fulfillment of prophecy, necessity for salvation’s plan, unintentional betrayal and greed. However, at the end I hope to convince you the motive is as old as time, “money”. His fellow disciples considered him a greedy thief and I consider their eye witness account to his life and character as good evidence, not to say that the other theories did not contribute in part.
Let’s start our quest with the scriptural account: Judas Iscariot, one of Jesus' twelve apostles, betrayed his master to the authorities. This act led to the crucifixion and death of Jesus.
What the Bible tells us specifically about Judas:
• Judas was one of the 12 disciples closest to Jesus
• Judas offered to betray Jesus to the religious authorities
• They agreed to pay him 30 pieces of silver for doing so

A manuscript called the Gospel of Judas, written in the 2nd century was translated from a 5th century copy in the first decade of the 21st century, although its existence had long been rumoured. Early comments on the manuscript suggested that it portrayed Judas in largely positive, even heroic, terms. The manuscript was said to show that Jesus asked Judas to betray him, so that Jesus could be freed from his physical body and the plan of salvation could be fulfilled. Judas was instructed to sacrifice Jesus the man - "you will sacrifice the man that clothes me" - and was warned by Jesus that he, Judas, would be hated by future generations as a result.

Why Is the Cross at the Heart of Christian Anthropology?

...Why is the Cross at the heart of Christian Anthropology? Christian Anthropology is the study of humans and Theology is the study of God. Jesus Christ was 100% God and 100% man. Accordingly Jesus can be studied in both Anthropology and Theology. Therefore the cross is at the heart of Anthropology because it is the study of Jesus God-man and humans who crucified Him on the cross. Christian Anthropology is a word made with two Greek words, Anthropos meaning “man” and logos meaning “word, matter, or thing.” Furthermore we use the word Christian “anthropology” to the study of man in reference to the Scripture. Therefore it involves studies and creation of man who was created in the “image of God. Consequently this includes the established nature of man before and after the fall. As a result of the fall human life has never been the same; anthropology is also concerned with human dignity, freedom, depravity, culture, and society. Since the creation of the world God had a plan to redeem mankind from sin through the cross of Christ Jesus by the shedding of His blood. Accordingly man freedom is the heart of the cross of Jesus. When we study man, his fall and redemption we have to understand our sins hence we have the word Hamartiogy. “Hamartiology,” is a word made up by two Greek terms hamartia meaning “sin” and logos. Furthermore it includes the biblical doctrine of sin including its origin, nature, transmission, effects, and judgment. In this essay the writer will briefly examine texts...

Eschatology

...THE SYNOPTIC APOCALYPSE (MARK 13 PAR): A DOCUMENT FROM THE TIME OF BAR KOCHBA Hermann Detering* he thirteenth chapter of the Gospel of Mark belongs to those texts of the New Testament which have been examined particularly often in recent times. Despite many differences in detail, a certain consensus is apparent between exegeses in so far as they all assume that the text in question, the so-called “Synoptic Apocalypse” (hereafter abbreviated as the SynApoc), arose either in the first or the second half of the first century. This investigation, however, will show that there are a number of factors which exclude such a dating and that numerous of clues indicate rather an origin in the time of the Bar Kochba uprising (132-135 CE). To be sure, the possibility of assigning such a date, which diverges considerably from what is usually taken for granted, does not even occure to most scholars, since the conclusion of their investigation is clearly determined by a prior methodological assumption: since the common assumption is that both Mark and Matthew were written in the second half of the first century, the SynApoc must also belong to this period or even precede it. In my opinion, however, for various reasons, it is highly questionable whether the customary and generally accepted dating of Mark's gospel around 70 CE is correct. Whoever concerns himself with the question of when the Synoptic Gospels arose quickly notices that he has hit upon a genuine weak point in the scholarly study...

Eva Ibbotson - a Company of Swans

...A Company of Swans Chapter One There was no lovelier view in England, Harriet knew this. To her right, the soaring towers of King's College Chapel and the immaculate lawns sloping down to the river's edge; to her left, the blue and gold of the scillas and daffodils splashed in rich abundance between the trees of the Fellows' Gardens. Yet as she leaned over the stone parapet of the bridge on which she stood, her face was pensive and her feet— and this was unusual in the daughter of a professor of classics in the year 1912— were folded in the fifth position. She was a thin girl, brown-haired and brown-eyed, whose gravity and gentleness could not always conceal her questing spirit and eagerness for life. Sensibly dressed in a blue caped coat and tarn o'shanter bought to last, a leather music case propped against the wall beside her, she was a familiar figure to the passers-by: to ancient Dr. Ferguson, tottering across the willow-fringed bridge in inner pursuit of an errant Indo-Germanic verb; to a gardener trimming the edges of the grass, who raised his cap to her. Professor Morton's clever daughter; Miss Morton's biddable niece. To grow up in Cambridge was to be fortunate indeed. To be able to look at this marvelous city each day was a blessing of which one should never tire. Harriet, crumbling bread into the water for the world's most blase ducks, had told herself this again and again. But it is not cities which make the destinies of eighteen-year-old girls, it is people— and...
