It seems that Menelaos benefitted from having the gods interfere in his life, but he had to suffer to get all of his treasures. Menelaos and his men were stuck in Egypt by the gods. They were stuck in the harbor for 20 days because there was no wind to take them back out to sea. Him and his men ran out of food and were starting to lose their will to live. One god takes pity on him and tells him to talk to the Old Man.
