The goal of a low carbohydrate diet is primarily to force the body into using its own fat as its main energy source. In order to do so, these diets require individuals to limit their carb intake to practically none, thus it is said to reduce the insulin production within the body. Insulin is the main hormone within the body that regulates blood sugar levels and controls energy storage. According to one expert “when carbs are restricted and insulin levels go down, the fat isn’t “locked” away in the fat cells anymore and becomes accessible for the body to use as energy, leading to reduced need for eating.” (Gunnars, 2015)
