“Welcome to the global village. It’s a nasty place.” What exactly is the “global village”? It is your technology. OUR technology to be exact. Why is it such a nasty place? Nicholas Carr says “...It magnifies our best traits, and it magnifies our worst.” Social media was initially made to pursue the “social mission” to make the world a better place and build a global community that works for everyone. But it got out of hand. According to Nicholas Carr, “Of the world’s 7 billion people, 6 billion have access to a mobile phone…” While there are people I know without a mobile device, the majority of people I know do have technology of some kind. Those who have technology tend to shut the world around them out. “When people get close together, the get more and more savage…” Yes, while our mobile devices and technology do help us stay connected with others, it also disconnects us from the world around us.
Do you hate it when you go to a friend’s house and all he or she wants to do is be on their phone? Well, I do. Most of my friends can not take their eyes off their mobile devices. Why? It is an addiction to social media. We love it when we get a text, we anticipate it. When we hear our phone buzz, we immediately check it. “With a smartphone in hand, everyone becomes a media hub, …show more content…
But what we do not realize is that being on technology all the time is not going to help you start a conversation or get a job; it will not help you build a relationship. My dad always tell me that technology “fries your brain”. Both my parents have Facebook and they will both sit on it for hours on end and not even notice if you say something to them. Believe it or not, but they also shut the world off and they probably do not realize that they are doing it. That is how everyone is. They do not realize it, but they are shutting the world out around

Animal Research

...experimental research they do is essential for producing effective drugs, and the animal rights activists believe that testing animals for advancements in medicine is not necessary. I believe that research using animals should continue as long as there is a reason for it to continue. Thanks to animal based research, to date millions of human lives have been saved. Animal testing is the only way to find out if vaccinations work for different diseases. We cannot just ask people off the streets to volunteer, as that would be morally and ethically wrong. At this time, scientific researchers have no alternatives for testing new drugs, as scientific computer modules can only do so much for testing. Also, the government has strong laws in place to ensure the health and welfare of test animals. As long as there is disease and sickness in the world, scientists will always be looking for the next cure and treatment options, so we will always need to have animal research. As long as the animals are treated humanely, I believe that it would be inhumane to the human race to stop animal research. Thanks to animal research, the advancements in disease control have been beneficial and should be able to continue in the future. Although animal research has saved thousands of human lives, it has remained a major controversy for several years even though scientific researchers have tried to ensure the well being of animals. Animal rights activists still deem it inhumane, even though...

The Pros And Cons Of Animal Testing

...“He who is cruel to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with men. We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals.” ― Immanuel Kant. Likewise, we can judge the amount of justice animals get in animal testing. While some believe animals should be tested on because it is necessary, most test on animals are not necessary, fail often, and are inhumane. Tests on animals are not necessary and are incorrect. First of all, most experiments are flawed; 87% of animal tests fail, causing animal lives to be sacrificed for nothing, according to procon.org. This means that people are being inconsiderate about wasted animals subjects. In the same fashion, 94% of drugs that pass animal tests fail in human clinical trials anyways. To add, there are many alternatives to animal testing, and new technology that does not require animal subjects. WIth all these failed tests, animals are dying for...

Capital Murder

...give you is that capital punishment is ultimate denial of human rights and that two wrongs don’t make a right. What this means is that by killing the person doesn’t change what he did and by killing him goes against everything we live for. Giving him the death penalty essentially says he is not a human and doesn’t not have right to live on this Earth. In my opinion this quote shows how amiss capital punishment is. The U.S hasn’t always practiced capital punishment but since it became recognized by the Constitution in 1776 there have been a total of 1281 executions. That is 1281 more people that have had their life decided on by fate and not by a group of jurors. Our justice system isn’t one hundred percent, which means we have no idea how many innocent people our justice system has murdered from capital punishment? Study’s say that thousands of people are falsely convicted each year even with our technology. I asked myself after I read that, why do we keep capital punishment then? If we are convicting that many innocent people and we know, what is the point to keep it? It makes our government look inhumane and like a half breed of Hitler and Ed Gein. Another sickening thought is what if the convict is mentally ill? They don’t need to put to death; they need help in a hospital, but even with the most advanced medicines and doctors you can’t always fix the illness. Is it fair that someone should be murdered just because they were unlucky enough to be born with a brain defect? In...

Stop Animal Testing in the Medical Field

...experimenting for their next scientific breakthrough. Ibn Zuhr (Avenzoar), an Arab physician in twelfth century Moorish Spain, introduced animal testing as an experimental method for testing surgical procedures before applying them to human patients (Hajar 2011). Many research associations claim that animal testing has been used in almost every single medical breakthrough within the last one hundred years. Laws have been passed in several countries to make this practice more “humane.” In reality, these laws are the bare minimum and do not truly make a difference for the animals that are being used for experimentations. Animal testing in the medical field needs to dissolve and ultimately come to an end because, it is cruel and inhumane, the results are not beneficial or accurate due to the differences amongst humans and animals and finally because there are many alternatives that can be used instead of animal testing. Animal testing is a cruel and inhumane practice that causes pain to those animals that are forced to participate. There is much research done,...

Animal Testing

...procedures and drugs. Scientists have been solving medical problems, developing new techniques and treatments, and curing diseases by using animals in biomedical research. Animal rights advocates believe that animals should not be exploited by humans, and that animals have the same rights as humans. Anti-vivisectionists oppose the use of animals in medical research. They believe that medical researchers are cruel and inhumane. Animal Welfare does not oppose all use of animals in research. They oppose inhumane and unnecessary use of animals and fight to eliminate pain and suffering of animals. On the Contrary, scientists argue that animal research is necessary because it helps them develop medications, vaccines, or new procedures to treat or prevent diseases for both humans and animals. Most research projects either do not involve pain or the pain is alleviated with analgesic or anesthetic drugs. They understand that pain causes stress for the animals, and this stress can seriously affect the results of the study. With all these controversies about this issue, why are animals necessary in research? Because animals make good research subjects. Animals are biologically similar to humans. In fact, chimpanzees share more than 99% of DNA with humans and mice share more than 98% DNA with humans, therefore, animals are susceptible to many of the same health problems as humans. Animals have a shorter life cycle than humans and as a result, they can...

Voices Not Heard

...Many animals go through torturous testing on a day to day basis that they cannot help, nor can they defend themselves. Since Ancient Greek times, animals have been undergoing cruel and inhumane medical testing that should not be done for the benefits of the human race. Animal testing is wrong because it is cruel, costly, harmful to animals, unreliable, and outdated. Animal testing has been around since the times of the Ancient Greeks. Between seventeen million and twenty-two million animals are used for biomedical research each year (Leepson). Many believe that animals do have rights, and there are many organizations out there to trying to ensure their safety and help them get out of the horrible treatments they endure. For example, the ASPCA, American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, has been around since 1866 trying to curb the gruesome treatment of humans to animals. The ASPCA tries to prevent the abuse and neglecting of animals around the nation. They set up shelters for animals and they give vaccines and anything else they may need. The different types of animals being tested are endless; from mice to sheep, they all serve their own purpose in the medical field. Even though these animals have helped scientist break through some medical mysteries, it is still inhumane how they have to suffer in confined quarters. The CAFO, Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations, raise animals in small living spaces for their meet, food, and waste. Chickens, for example...

...dilemmas. problems, and/or controversies in punishment that we face in today's justice system? Address a minimum of three. Furthermore, what can to done to draw attention to these issues? What are some possible solutions and/or policy implications that can address the ethical dilemmas/problems/controversies you selected? Lastly, in your opinion, why are these issues more "important" that others that we covered this semester? The 1970s War on Drugs is one of the most important ethical issues that we face in today’s justice system. The War on Drugs is more important than others because it has many negative trickling effects from the shift to punitive policies. The War on Drugs has made America the leader in incarceration rates (Banks 2005:114). These high incarceration rates within America have also led to overcrowding, racial bias, increase in women in prison, and many other negative effects. The public does need to be educated on the negative effects from the War on Drugs in order to push for change in our punitive policies for non-violent drug offenders. In order to change these negative effects, America needs to get rid of mandatory minimums and the three strikes laws. These laws are placing many non-violent drug offenders in prison. These offenders are in need of substance abuse treatment in order to stop the vicious recidivism cycle. Wrongful conviction is another very important ethical issue that we are facing in today’s justice system. Wrongful convictions...

Animal Testing: a Reasonable Stance

...Animal Testing: A Reasonable Stance Animals can give us love and happiness when we are caring for them as pets, but what else can animals give us? Over the past century animals have also given us vaccines, drugs, and more that have kept our society healthy and safe from deadly infections, all due to animal testing. But are the welfare of animals something that should be risked to make our lives better? The issue of animal testing has caused an ongoing battle in our society that deals with both science and animal rights. There are those who favor it because it is allows for scientific progress, and there are those who oppose it because it is the ethically right thing to do. Both sides have valid arguments, which most people choose to side with one or the other. With a better understanding of each side of the issue, animal testing, we can conceive a credible truth. The complex issue of animal testing is one that should not be researched in a bias way. One must explore both and all sides of the argument to come to a valid conclusion. While I have yet to find a piece of writing that equally argues both sides of animal testing, the combined research I have done on both sides of the spectrum allows for a solid foundation for this discussion. These two stances on animal testing are opposite not only in position on the issue, but also in reasoning. The side for animal testing is reasoning on the means of science and research used to develop new medical treatment, while the side against...

We are choosing how a human will look like and how his body will react to certain things before this person is even born, just like GMO’s in our food, an alteration of an organism so that it is better or even “perfect”. The ethical issues brought by this technique from the genetics labs are likely to be very complicated. What if parents can use pre-implantation genetic diagnosis to avoid having kids with attention-deficit disorder or those predestined to be short or predisposed to homosexuality? Will they feel pressure from friends and relations to do so? And will kids who are allowed to be born with these characteristics be made to feel even more like second-class citizens than they do now? This technique is beginning to be more popular by the hour, and it is important that it is controlled in the correct way. This new development is incredibly powerful to the human race because it is capable of altering every little defect a human has or may have in the future. People ask themselves if this is something good, but most of them hesitate when they try to look for an explanation of how they feel about this, on one side we can prevent deathly diseases like HIV and Cancer, but on the other side, the abuse of this technique, when altering how the person will look like physically, or how intelligent he/she...

Argumentative Essay On Animal Testing

...When you are picking out your eyeliner, chapstick, or any kind of medical products, have you ever stopped to wonder, “On what are these products tested?” You could be supporting animal cruelty without even be aware of it. The majority of the medications that we are provided with today have been tested on animals before being introduced onto the market . Using animals in scientific research has forever since been a controversial topic for heated debates. Despite the fact that we often benefit from successful animal experimentation, the pain and death that hundreds of millions of animals are suffering from are not worth the welfare of human beings. In addition, many forward-thinking-scientists have developed alternatives that replace the use of animals and furthermore, provides more accurate data to the study of human health and diseases. Therefore, I believe...
