ARLINGTON, Va.—It’s all about the deal for today’s grocery shopper, according to “U.S. Grocery Shopper Trends 2010," a report from the Food Marketing Institute (FMI).

“Shoppers have gained a renewed appreciation for saving money through home-cooked meals, comparison shopping, store selection, brand preference, coupons and more," said FMI President and Chief Executive Officer Leslie G. Sarasin. “They choose to save money by eating at home but they also believe, overwhelmingly, that the food they eat at home is healthier than eating away from home. It is clear supermarkets are positioned to help their customers save money and help them make healthier choices when it comes to food."

According to the FMI report, shoppers are spending an average of $99.90 weekly on groceries, up 1.5 percent compared to last year’s average of $98.40. The three top reasons for choosing a primary store are: Price (75 percent); high-quality fruits and vegetables (73 percent); and items on sale or money-saving specials (67 percent).

With saving money at the top of their minds, consumers are buying only what they need and seeking the best value for their money, says the FMI report. They are also using money-saving tactics such as making a shopping list, researching sales, collecting coupons and comparing prices across store formats before going to the store. Once at the store, they are participating in frequent shopper programs, using in-store coupons, buying from specials, stocking up on bargains and purchasing private brands.

Why We Hurt the Ones We Love the Most

...Shayla Fletcher Mrs. Brewer English 9, Period 2 23 January 2012 Why We Hurt the Ones We Love Most Many people have realized we hurt the ones we love the most, and in the story “The Scarlet Ibis”, by James Hurst, it really make you realize why we do such a thing. There are two brothers in the story trying to make it together, and the older brother pushes it to the edge. The older brother, the narrator, is loving, full of pride, cruel, and hopeful all at the same time, towards his little brother Doodle. With all these emotions going on at the same time, the results turn out to be something you would never imagine. In the story Doodle, William Armstrong, was born as a very special young man. He was so special; nobody thought he was going to live when being born. He didn’t get a name till’ he was three months old and had a casket built for him as a sign. With all this being wrong with him, his older brother gave him the nickname Doodle because he felt it wasn’t a name he had to live up to, or be expected of big things, rather than William Armstrong. Though it seems mean everyone agreed, but that’s okay because he was still a loving older brother towards Doodle. He took Doodle everywhere with him as he grew up. He even took him to his favorite place, The Old Woman Swamp. They would go all the time and have lots of fun like normal brothers would. They made crowns, necklaces, and more together out of honeysuckle. So, with Doodle being a little different then normal......

Why I?

...Why I love fashion At an early age wool, cotton, linen, and silk have been always a part of me. Not much has changed since that time except for the fact that I have grown to love and appreciate what goes on behind the scenes in the fashion industry. I simply dress to have amusement to my existence. As Bill Cunningham described in his wonderful documentary "Fashion is our suit of armor to survive every day life. It would be like doing away with civilization." I was confused on whether to engage my life to the fashion industry being such a competitive job. I believe that fashion has pushed me out of my comfort zone to try things I never would have imagined I would. What keeps me passionate about the fashion world is the freedom and creative expression one gets. You can express yourself and maybe people will listen or respond. If I see someone with a great pair of shoes on (for example), I may go up to them and tell them and we strike up a conversation and perhaps we become friends. This isn't always the case but it is more likely since you started with a mutual interest. I knew I could start making the world pretty one girl at a time! Fashions is art that we wear every day and live our lives in. Unless you live in a nudist colony, clothes are something that we must wear every day. The beauty of that is that through clothing we have the opportunity to express a part of our personalities and ourselves. I love beautiful and functional design of all types whether it be......

Why Does She Stay

...“Why does she stay?” That is the most common question when domestic violence is brought up. Domestic abuse occurs in all races, all economic backgrounds, and in all levels of society and the effects of the abuse can last a lifetime, and the reasons women stay in violent relationships are numerous and multifaceted. There is no black or white reason as to why women stay in abusive relationships. Due to the media and advocacy programs domestic violence is gaining more and more awareness. However, the attention on domestic violence tends to focus on the physical abuse and the effects that causes. The emotional abuse that occurs within a violent relationship is considered just as damaging to the victim if not more. According to the National Coalitional against Domestic Violence, the definition of domestic violence is the “willful intimidation, physical assault, battery, sexual assault, and/or other abusive behavior perpetrated by an intimate partner against another.” As one can see, domestic violence reaches much further than physical violence, but those issues are often overlooked. Even though men can be victims of domestic violence, statistics show that one in four women experience domestic violence in their lifetime (Office of Women’s Health). The form of abuse that is used against the victim is not limited to, but can include isolation, threats, intimidation, and economic abuse. Each one of these forms of abuse causes the victim grave distress and even though......

When I Turned Diabetic

...summer seasons. As I was enjoying riding my bike I felt something that was unusual. I had a thirst that could not be quenched come over me and at the time I did not realize that this trip would be very different from any other in the past. We left for our usual camping trip on a Friday but this time we would be in the doctor’s office as they were opening on Monday morning. As I sit in the diabetic specialist’s office hearing the news that I was diabetic I realized that the life I had known so far would never be the same. It was August of 1989 we were on our way to another weekend of fishing, bike riding, and camping. I was eight years old at the time and was getting ready to start the third grade in elementary school. As soon as we got unloaded I could tell that I didn’t feel quite right. I had a thirst that I could not quench. There was a paved circle where our camper was parked and I remember riding my bike around it continually. In the middle of the circle was a water faucet for the campers to use any time they needed it. I can vividly remember not being able to pass that water faucet without stopping and drinking as much as I could stomach. We also had a case of soda and other drinks for the weekend that I finished off after a day at the campsite. The constant thirst was the worst part of the symptoms, but frequent urination obviously came with it. remember getting up close to a dozen times in one night to use the restroom. The following day I was on my......

Foss Does It Help or Does It Hurt

...FOSS has it helped or has it hurt? Bonita Jones-Bey Class IT 302 Professor Emerenini July 26, 2013 Upon my undertaking of this assignment I wasn’t aware of the in-depth concept of Free and Open-Source Software. I had very little understanding of how or why a patent would be needed or just how much controversy came with this ideology. So to be able to understand my assignment I had to understand what the issues were and get a clearer conception of business patents and monopolizing the market and the draw backs and cons.( Sean Michael Kerner ) What is Free Open-Source Software? Free is software at no cost and open source software is software that is liberally licensed by OSI that uses an open source list of open source licenses, that grant users the right to use and re-use, copy, study, modify, and improve its design through the availability of its source code, rather than having to purchase software or ask permission. When I Was One and Twenty

...When I was One-and-Twenty Summary Our speaker gets some advice from an older, wiser person: don't bank too much on love. Like any young person, he promptly ignores the advice. Did we mention that he's 21? Keep that in mind. It'll be important later. Flash forward: now he's 22. And as it turns out, the advice he got was pretty good. Love hurts. And we're not just quoting that '80s song. Line 1-2 When I was one-and-twenty I heard a wise man say, • Uh-oh. Any time a literary work starts out with a wise man's sayings, you just know that they're probably going to be ignored. If we listened to wise advisors, we wouldn't have any stories to tell. And poems are stories, after all. • So, we've got a young whippersnapper and his older mentor. Stay tuned, folks…. Lines 3-6 "Give crowns and pounds and guineas But not your heart away; Give pearls away and rubies But keep your fancy free." • Well, it turns out that love is worth more than gold. Or, er…the lack of love is worth more than gold. • Don't let the happy tone and snappy rhymes confuse you: this poem is about control. It turns love into an economic calculation, one which allows the "wise man" to balance feelings against more conventional forms of currency (crowns and pounds and guineas are, after all, the big guns of the U.K.'s monetary system). As it turns out, the heart is more valuable than money – which is precisely why the speaker's buddy thinks that it should remain soundly within his control. • Of course,......

Does Polluted Water Hurts the Environment?

...Does Polluted Water Hurts the Environment? Embry Riddle Aeronautical University Abstract Water pollution is the worst problem that the United States and other nations are facing today. Although, many people have known this issue, they are still contributing to it. People need to become more responsive on this issue by complying on several ways to prevent water pollution. The chemical industry and factory farms need to follow the guidelines of operating their business, by using proper disposal methods for hazardous materials and waste materials. Chemical industry and factory farms need to follow the guidelines behind water pollution. To begin with, factory farms should be regulated accordingly. They must obtain permits, monitor water quality and pay for cleaning up and disposing of their waste. Also, factory farms must strengthen their new technology standards. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) must consider recent technological advances that significantly reduce pathogens. In addition, residents and local government should get involved and must have a say in whether to allow factory farms in their communities. The public also has the right to review and comment on the contents of pollution reduction plans and to enforce the terms, when a factory farm is in violation. The politically powerful chemically industry should enforce federal laws that permits underground waste disposal. A better and......

When I Get Old

...Running head: WHEN I GET OLD 1 When I Get Old Janice Johnson SOC304 – Social Gerontology Dr. Elaine Alden October 26, 2014 Running head: WHEN I GET OLD When I Get Old There are conflicting ideas about what to expect as we get older. Will we be able to keep growing our gardens, be able to keep our present jobs or will the younger generation take our 2 freedom and pride from us. Our text states that no matter how old you are, child or adult, that we are told to “act our age” because societies have a social system that is considered to be normal (Markson & Stein, 2012). It is getting harder to think of a norm for saying someone is old now because we are living longer and for example women are having their children, are almost a grandparent or a last child is just graduating and leaving the home around the same age. The chronological age is not enough to say whether someone is reaching a certain norm age group as easily as it used to be determined (Markson & Stein, 2012). Some of the issues that we do have to deal with as we grow older are when others discriminate against us, the aches and pains that come with different levels of intensity and how we feel about ourselves at this time. Discrimination Anyone who has gone and applied for a job, no matter what kind of education they may have or how they feel, they are turned down for the position and while not telling you, it is because of your age that you were turned down. It is much the same kind of discrimination......

Why It Hurts to Be a Handsome Man on the Job Hunt

...Reading Response 1 After reading the title of the article Why it Hurts to be a Handsome Man on the Job Hunt, I was interested in the approach and results of the investigation. When reading the article I thought it was an interesting subject to study and take into account, because it isn’t something I would ever think could occur within the workplace. The common topics of workplace discussions are typically how women are discriminated against and harassed by men in the office. This new insight of another common discrimination within the workplace caught my attention. My initial thought of the piece was that it had to be a rumor that was circulating within the workplace until I read the research was done by the University College London and the University of Maryland. I feel as though the research was legitimate in portraying workplace behaviors by having participants, or managers view pictures of both attractive and unattractive men to hire for their workplace. I thought the organization, wording, and length of the piece made it an easier read than most articles I have read previously. Since English is not my first language, I sometimes have trouble understanding parts of a piece. This article had a title for each section that described what it was talking about, used basic words that are understandable to most audiences and got right to the point. This article provided interesting information on what managers are looking for in each type of work setting. It was found......

We shall study the gamut of legal concepts, from product liability, to civil rights, to intellectual property rights, to antitrust and consumer protection. Underpinning all of these legal concepts, however, will be two foundational aspects: (a) the ethical issues within, and (b) the "world view" without. Milton Friedman, Immanual Kant, Blanchard and Peale, Laura Nash . . . these are just a few of the names of ethicists and business people about whom you will study and learn. During Week 1, we begin the process of sorting out how we feel about business social responsibility. We shall consider this question: Does business have a social responsibility beyond maximization of profits, and if so, how does business fulfill a corporate social responsibility? We will also begin considering how our behavior affects everyone in the entire world. The world-view of business is becoming quite the norm rather than the exception. Why Walmart Hurts the Economy

...Antioch businesses are all competing to win over their customers, opening up a Walmart will take away from the revenue made by these businesses. Walmart has a history of knocking out businesses that are set up near it, since their prices are so low. Walmart doesn’t look to improve communities, only drain them of their money for their own profits. It may seem that it benefits the people which is the most important goal of a city, but in reality it just eats at them in disguise. Not only is this bad for the small businesses, but also for the city and the people. If a Walmart is built, the economic diversity of having lots of different stores surrounding Antioch will deteriorate over time. Soon the only choice would be Walmart. Secondly, Walmart does all it can to make sure it’s employees are payed the minimum possible. This superstore will require the presence of a large number of employees. At first it sounds like something positive since there’s so much discussion in America about making jobs, but the issue is that Walmart lowers an employee’s quality of life based on benefits and health. According to Chris Osterndorg of dailydot.com, in order for Walmart to help with any sort of Medicare, employees have to deal with twenty percent co-pays along with a five thousand dollar out of pocket maximum. This can be a serious problem because of the amount most Walmart employees get payed a year. According to makeachangeatwalmart.org, Walmart employees get paid below the poverty line......

The Reason I When Back to School

...My Reason for Returning To School When I returned to school, I knew I wanted to become a law enforcement officer. Ever since, my cousin Rona Lisa was the victim of a domestic violence relationship during her marriage to a very jealous man. She could not walk down the street and speak to any other man without him thinking that she wanted to be with them. Life was hard enough, but after they had a daughter it seem to get worst for Rona. The abuse had gotten so bad that she had to be hospitalized from a beating that left her covered in bruises. Finally she have had enough and decided to leave. But it was not easy at all for Rona. Her husband Robert could not let go. He had stalked her for months. Seeing her run from this man and could not get help from any law enforcement agencies, she hid herself and her children in different places. When he found her, he threatens her to come home or he would hurt anyone that would help her. So she went back to him to keep him from messing with her family and friends that provided her help and a place to stay. Even when the police was called out, they stated they could not do anything because she would not press charges because of him threatening her. They told her she would have to say what he was doing for them to help her. Until then he was not breaking any laws. She was told, she would have to come down to file for a restraining order. They seen she had bruises on her, but they did not take that into account. Because of too many......
