I think that this diamond advertise has an issue with “truth telling for business.” This ad may not necessarily lie; your girl may actually think you’re funny again if you buy her these diamonds. But these kinds of advertisement have been misrepresenting and manipulating the whole society to believe a very expensive rock to be a necessary source of happiness. According to the Epicurus video narrated by de Button (ND), Epicurus believed that “advertisement cunningly associate the products they wanted to sell with the things customers need to be happy.” This advertise makes us want to buy diamonds by associating it with the fact that it’s the deep companionship we’re looking for (according to Epicurus, friendship is one of three major ingredients for happiness (de Button, ND)). Without the advertisements saying that diamonds are the “necessary representation of love,” it wouldn’t make sense for your girl to start looking at you differently when you give her these rocks. In Adam Ruins Everything video titled “Why Engagement Rings Are a Scam” (CollegeHumor, 2014), Adam says that before the 1930s, people didn’t use to propose using diamond rings. That means if you time travel before the 30s and give diamonds to a girl of that time, she won’t see you as “funny” in the way you would expect.
