siblings go to college

Hello. Anyone home? No answer. I went through the entire house to find that I was alone. My parents were working and my older siblings had moved on to college. To help me overcome this adversity, I had to focus on the life skills: relationships and humor. I know that many call it a right of passage, but having my siblings move on to college left me feeling incomplete. My whole life seemed to involve my older brother and sister, but having them both gone was hard. I still have my little sister and dog at home, but having both my older siblings off to college has been extremely difficult for me. The effects of my adversity I don’t get to see them that much, i also get to see them on some holidays. my family also misses

Gaining College Degree

...Getting a college degree is very important to me. I want to achieve my lifelong goal in being the first in my family to graduate college. In addition, my degree will also help me prepare for success after college, and I will have a sense of accomplishment in achieving my goal on my own. Some people wonder why a college degree is important to have, but it can take you far in life by being a good role model, succeeding in life, and having confidence. Working to get my degree I became a positive influence in my family members. Growing up in a home where no one had a college degree was a rough situation for me; I used to think to myself that the only way to get out of this situation was to have an education, so I decided to further my education by going to college. By the time I started college I realized that I would be the first in my family to get my degree; therefore, I became an inspiration to my siblings at home. Some of my siblings told me that they're not going off to college, but they beg to differ since I said to them that “Education is key to success.” They knew that it was the only way for them to achieve their goals in becoming something that...

Arguentative Letter on Poverty

...poverty, or the ways the government is trying to fix this issue. I grew up in Detroit, Michigan where more than a third of residents live below the poverty line (Sasha Abramsky, "America's Shameful Poverty Stats"). Throughout my childhood I have watched many friends' families struggle financially. Sometimes my friends would go without eating for a couple of days simply because they could not afford it. I would offer them food but they would kindly decline because they were so embarrassed because of their situation. They would wear clothes that wouldn't fit them because they couldn't afford to buy new clothes. They would miss school to watch their little siblings because their mom was a single parent and had to work all day everyday just so she could feed them. They didn't even apply to college because they knew they had to immediately pick up a crapy job so they could help their mom pay the bills. The list goes on. All of this is happening under your supervision and it doesn't seem like much is affectively fixing this issue. America's lowest percentage of citizens living below the poverty line was 11.1 percent in 1973. It reached 15.2 percent in 1983 then dropped again to 11.3 percent in 2000 (Peter Edelman, "Poverty in America; Why Can't We End It?"). That just proves the government is capable of slightly decreasing the amount of poor people today in this country. What does not help is the fact that half of the nations jobs pay less than $34,000 a...

...My story Some of the many reasons why I decided to come to college are because of my family, myself and my future. Coming from a home with parents who are immigrants and were not blessed with the opportunity to go to school has been a big eye opener for me. Seeing my mom work hard, day and night to provide for me and my siblings has encouraged me to want better for myself. She comes from a struggling background and always reminds us that the biggest blessing we can give her is the gift of us going to school and graduating. That’s exactly what I will do. I had many choices to choose from like get a full time job, go to trade school or go to college. ,I graduated high school in 2016, during that time I applied at a full time...

...November 19, 2012 Final Project: First-Generation College Students First for Everything No two people have the same experiences due to the fact that every person is different, whether it be a difference in background, education, or skin color, something separates everyone. When attending college, you become exposed to to even more differences between everyone. Students come from various backgrounds, including some students being the first in their family to attend college. These particular students are also known as first-generation college students. The hard-work and dedication of these students should not go unnoticed because they struggle differently due to them going into college blind in a sense. They do not know what to expect when going into college because proper guidance is lacked which leaves them at a disadvantage opposed to their counterparts who have family that are experiencing or have experienced the college life. However, a negativity or positivity of a person background does not determine their future, but rather the hardworking ethic and dedication it takes to succeed. “Fischer (2007) reported that black and Hispanic students are more often FGS than their white or Asian counterparts, and they also tend to have lower socioeconomic status backgrounds.
