I did notice that when I have more on my mind, that it is harder to make myself be physically still, and my mind is similarly resistant to slowing down. Week of Feb. 1 – progressive relaxation I didn’t really like the speaker, because he sounded fake, like someone narrating a children’s bedtime story. That was one distraction. It required a deliberate effort at non-judgmental observation to get past this, which I suspect the average listener isn’t trained to do. The relaxation was hard to do because I normally feel some degree of physical discomfort throughout the day, and the tensing-relaxing directions were uncomfortable, and sometimes too fast to keep up with. This exercise is apparently designed for healthy, young participants! ...Response Paper #2 I was really amazed by the amount of vessels that I read from the book. My favorite vessel was the “ding vessel”. This was my favorite vessel because it reminded me of a stone mortar called “mortero de piedra” in Spanish. We use this stone mortar to make a spicy salsa, so when ever I look at the ding vessel it reminds me of my own culture. It has the same structure with the four legs to support the “bowl” on the top. The ding vessel was used for cooking as well as in my culture with the stone mortar. They were also used for storage and rituals offerings to their ancestors. When this vessel was used during rituals it was a symbol of authority. If someone owed more than one of this kind of vessel they were associated with power and domination over land. The decoration has a lot of significance in this kind of vessel. For example in the most common ding vessel, the final type of decoration was the inscription.These inscriptions were used to identify the function of the vessel, the owner or they could simply be poems or even stories of why the ding was created. The cosmic question states: “how can one bring into one’s individual life a recognition of one’s relation to the universe as a whole, whatever that relation is?” Sartre answers this by saying that the cosmic question has no answer, but his sense is that the absence of an answer, even if we aren’t aware of that, is something palpable in our lives and needs to be addressed and we need to cope with it.
