Why Rehabilitation
Karmella Moten
Kaplan University

The penal system today is a multi-million dollar industry, with about 1,325 state and 84 federal prisons the entire country has the capacity to incarcerate its criminal population. The past three decades will be remembered as a time of overwhelming imprisonment, because of the concerns with community protection reaching an outstanding high, with the firm drug laws and strict repeat offenders putting more people behind bars. Incarceration, however, is not the main objective of prisons; they also serve two important purposes, punishment and rehabilitation. Prisons have been designed and operated for years with these two objectives in mind; sometimes the punishment and the rehabilitation are separate from one another, most of the time they go hand in hand, the punishment for the crime and the rehabilitation to return to society.
Punishment is the infliction of a penalty as retribution for an offense. There are several ways our correctional system punishes offenders today, ranging from confinement to capital punishment, confinement being the most predominant. This includes: tight living quarters, sometimes solitary confinement, strict house rules and minimal contact with the outside world, all of which can be draining on an inmate’s morale.
The death penalty is the harshest punishment the court system can impose. It has come in many forms since its birth and has become very controversial in recent years. Though now called capital punishment, the death penalty was first recognized in the 18th century B.C., and in the 10th century A.D. hanging became the usual method of execution in areas like Britain. (History of death penalty laws, 2013) Capital punishment today is much more civilized, in 2003 Governor George Ryan ordered a moratorium on executions after evidence proved 13 inmates on death row were wrongly

Reform Juvenile Justice in Delaware

...juveniles, the law enforcement officials, and the public alike. One of the first changes Delaware can take to make their juvenile justice system stand out from other states is to remove the mandatory rules to charge some juveniles as adults. Currently, only four other states do not utilize mandatory rules for sentencing juveniles as adults (Trying Juveniles as Adults, 1998). This may seem like an easy way out for some juveniles who have committed more serious offenses, but it’s important to remember that these juveniles are, in fact, still juveniles. They haven’t fully developed mentally, physically, psychologically, etc., and it’s unreasonable to charge them as adults for crimes that they have committed as juveniles. Focusing on rehabilitation for our juveniles should be a main priority, not locking them away for years on end and depriving them of services such as substance abuse counseling and psychological therapy programs that they would immensely benefit from. Another recommendation that could help Delaware’s juvenile justice system is to expand the civil citation program. The Civil Citation program was initially implemented in Leon County, Florida, and the goal of this program is to hold the juvenile offender accountable for their actions by providing an alternative to...

Social Network Addiction

...Social Network Addiction A Social Network is a social structure typically online made up of particular organizations or individuals which are connected through common interests, relationship beliefs, or friendship. The term social network was first termed by J. A. Barnes in 1954. He associated the term with the patterns and concepts use by the public and his fellow social scientists that tied them to one another. Now in 2010 people usually relate to a social network by thinking of Facebook and Myspace. These websites have grown so large and fast in the past decade that there have even been movies made about their success with A list actors competing for lead roles. It seems that the whole world has gotten caught up with this so-called Facebook and Internet addiction. I catch my sister spending up to 20 hours a week wasting her life away on Internet alone. CNN reports people spending entire nights just customizing their page, even if they have work the next day. Scientists like Dr. Block of Seattle’s research institute report of patients who use the Internet excessively more than 30 or 40 hours a week. New studies suggest Internet addicts are in the millions. There are lots of treatments available from 12 step programs found all over the internet ironically to methods like using a timer next to your computer every time you log on. The one I found to be most useful was a software program that will let you log onto a site life Facebook on specific days but only for...

Wilderness Therapy Benefits

...Many approaches to treating addiction focus on a talk therapy. These evidence-based options play an important role in the healing process but there is more ground to cover. Breaking Food Addiction: the Story of Amber

...Nearly 4 years ago today Amber W. was struggling with her weight. At the same time she was struggling to fit into a society that puts blame and shame on the obese. But an involvement with a 12 step program put her on a path to truth of self, recovery and eventually life changing weight loss. “Prior to being introduced to 12 steps, my life was about food and the acquisition of it,” said Amber. Only 48 months ago Amber weighed nearly 320 lbs with a dress size of 26. Tired of fad diets and breaking self promises, she turned to the help of the well-known 12 steps for addiction and as she put it ‘got real’ about her food addiction. She found a long term solution for her food issues in understanding the science of addiction to food and by committing herself to the 12 steps of addiction recovery. The Sunrise medical unit is also an option for me for these areas both house men and women who are in need of counseling and therapeutic healing and resource counselors as well. At times individuals are sent to Sunrise by mistake not knowing whether or not someone needs detoxing and or psychotropic medication maintenance has been a dilemma for many years at Sunrise. Substance Abuse Treatment Analysis

...Introduction There are about as many treatments for substance abuse as there are substances in this world. Some have been shown to be highly effective and others have raised an eyebrow or two. In this paper, I will compare three widely popular substance abuse treatments, one of which I got to experience first-hand. While I will not say, I am an expert on treatment modalities I will provide some important pros and cons about each treatment as I see it relates to most substance abuse communities. I would like to also have you, the reader, come away with more knowledge and insight about these treatments so that you can make an educated and informed decision concerning treatment options. The first treatment I will discuss is the traditional 12-step program and my observations as a first-time visitor at a meeting. I will then move on to SMART Recovery and discuss what I found on their website. Lastly, I will go over Celebrate Recovery and how that program operates. Traditional 12-Step Introduction Founded by Bill Wilson in the mid-1930’s AA or Alcoholics Anonymous is a free, “higher power” based, self-help program based on the assumption that change can result in a group that shares common problems (Pita, 2014). The members of this group are encouraged to share their emotions and feelings about addiction and recovery in hopes of helping each other motivate or maintain sobriety. This treatment is divided in to 12-steps that are worked at the individuals own pace. In a meeting, there...

Rehabilitation Centers

...Rehabilitation Centers: An Integral Part of Patient Care Rehabilitation centers are designed to help “restore some or all of a patient’s physical, sensory and mental capabilities that were lost due to injury, illness or disease” (Farlex, 2012). Many doctors will prescribe rehabilitation services after a patient has suffered through an amputation, neurological issues, a variety of orthopedic injuries, spinal cord injuries, stroke or other traumatic brain injuries. Patients can be treated in either an inpatient or outpatient setting. This normally depends on the severity of their injury or illness. A patient who has suffered a stroke, for example will be treated within the hospital by therapists before being discharged and prescribed outpatient therapy. Stroke patients are also treated under more than one rehabilitation discipline. This means that they will see not only a licensed physical therapist but in many cases, an occupational and speech therapist as well. There are two main distinctions between physical therapists, orthopedic, neurological and pediatric. Orthopedic therapists work with a number of different diagnoses but the majority of their patients suffer from a muscle, joint or spinal injury. Advancements in medicine have allowed surgeons to perform joint replacement surgeries. Patients who have had a total knee, hip or shoulder replacement will more often than not end up in the hands of a physical therapist. According to the American Physical Therapy Association...
