Why We Should Have Longer School Hours

...Students these days go to school at least 990 hours in a year, why should we be forced to go for more? The big argument right now is that the school year should either have more days or we should increase the number of hours in a day. Some schools across the United States have already followed through with this idea. But why do people think this is a good idea? The main fight for longer school time is that it would help the U.S. improve their academic standings compared to other countries across the world. Students in the U.S. already spend about 30% less time in schools than other industrialized nations and could be lagging behind in global competitions. However, a longer school day or year would cost lots more money, cause students to become less focused and shorten students free time....

Why We Should Have Longer School Days

...Longer School Days: A Multi-Beneficial Idea When people think of America, some think of our “greatness”, or how America is one of the “superpower” nations. They may think of our huge military strength, or the vast amount of unique cities we have scattered around this widespread country. But what do people think about our education system? Unfortunately, many individuals are unaware of the decline that our education system has suffered. For instance, Geoffrey Canada, president of the Harlem children’s zone, an organization whose goal is to increase graduation among students, says that many schools in the area don’t even have enough time to cover the entire curriculum during the day. This is just one of the many problems with America’s education system that needs to be fixed. It is especially concerning for the future generation, as they will have to compete with a global economy in where other countries such as Japan are advancing much more than America is in terms of education and innovation. Therefore, because America’s education system is in a rut from things like low test scores to high dropout rates, adding longer school days will be both beneficial to not only the system, but also to the parents, students and teachers. Extending the school day length will give low income students more academic opportunities while keeping them out of trouble, allow ESL (English as a second language) students to adjust comfortably to the school environment, give all students regardless of...

Longer School Lunches Research Paper

...your school already have a long lunch? Well, schools should have longer lunches because it helps kids relax, it is a lot more healthier, and kids don't waste as much food. There are many advantages for having a longer lunch including students have more time to relax and a break from all the stress that school gives. If you have more time to eat then you have more time to talk, which helps kids relax. Attention spans are dropping among students, and short lunch periods may be part of the problem (Food Service Solutions). Wouldn't you be ready to learn after a 40 minute lunch break? The second reason why there should be longer lunches is that it is way healthier. For example if the lunch is longer then the lunch ladies have more time to prepare the food. Which means healthy lunch, more greens and more fruits. Also rushing to eat doesn't give students time to recognize things like signs of fullness or the way certain foods make them feel (¨Food Service Solutions¨). And the Journal of Academy of Nutrition conducted an experiment on an elementary school. They found out that students eat 13% less of their main...

Four Day School Week Research Paper

...the school on the Four-Day school week, ”the schools with shorter weeks still kept the kids in class for the same number of hours”,because of the traditional Five-Day week, which means longer hours in the classroom. So what will be better? Four-Day or Five-Day school week? The problem is that schools think that the four-day week would be better for the kids because school districts looking to save time and money have switched to four-day weeks. Will a Longer School Year Help or Hurt Us Students

...Will Longer School Year Help or Hurt US Students In the article, “Will Longer School Year Help or Hurt US Students” by Julie Carr Smyth it questions whether or not having a longer school year would be beneficial to students. It highlights the option of continuing school all year long and adding three equal vacations in each third of the year, centered around holidays. I believe that this idea would be smart and that it should be put into place. The first reason why I believe that having a year round school schedule would be beneficial is because it would give the students less time to forget the material they had been studying the grade before. The article states, “Proponents argue that too much knowledge is lost while American kids wile away the summer months apart from their lessons” (Smyth n.p). It has even been tested that student’s test scores are high at the beginning of the school year opposed to at the end before school starts back up, and that only 10-15% of the student body did not lose any knowledge. That means that a whopping 85-90% of the student body did lose knowledge over the summer months. The second reason why a system like this would work is because it would give lower class children a chance to get free school lunches year-round. Smyth states, “Supporters also say a longer school year would give poor children more access to school-provided healthy meals” (Smyth n.p). During the school year some children’s most filling and healthiest meal is...

No Summer Breaks

...interesting than school, but in school you can learn more. For example, if you have all summer in school you would have a longer time for learning. Students can benefit from school because they don’t use electronics all day long. For instance, if you are sitting in front of the computer all day your brain will turn to mush or waste. The students are putting their brains to work doing schoolwork or math problems for example. Students will also get homework that keeps the students busy. If we did not have a summer break I think we should have at least holiday breaks. For example, we should have Easter, Christmas breaks, or important holidays. We should not have a summer break because we can learn more. We would have a little bit of electronics which means we are kept busy. Names began to be called and the athletes began to call out their schools. “Last but not least Eron Morgan,” called the coach with pride. “Sir I am homeschooled.” The coach looked at the athlete and said, “Have a seat son. Why School Should Start Later Essay

...to stay at school? What if you have to stay for tutorial or sport practice? Even though going to school later seems cool, the time of school is right where it is supposed to be. Later times in school results in tired students and unnecessarily late dismal times. School is scheduled strategically for the wellbeing of students and the staff, so changing the time will have several consequences. Early is on time, and on time is late. With school times being later, students will be more lax and less focused on the lesson. Therefore, school should not be held at a later time. This is necessary because students will be able to have more time after school to complete tasks and do their hobbies. In addition, students who come out of school earlier, are happier than those who have to arrive and stay at school longer. Furthermore, it is scientifically proven that early times have little to no effect on the academics of a student. Finally, while starting school later gives students more time to sleep, it ultimately can cause a large disruption in the schedule of parents and transportation. There are several...

Should Student-Athletes Get Paid?

...Thomas Bessinger Professor Hortman February 18, 2014 Should Student-Athletes get paid? A very popular question that has been lingering around the sports world for sometime now is whether or not student-athletes should get paid. There are a lot of different opinions about this topic. The NCAA does not allow student-athletes to receive any type of benefits of any kind from the university; if the student-athlete does, he is no longer an amateur athlete and can no longer compete at the college level. This problem has been common over the past years and is causing athletes and universities to be penalized. If the NCAA would allow student-athletes to receive some benefits this would not be as common. Therefore, student-athletes should get paid because they are making money for their university, many student-athletes cannot have a job, and it is unfair for the NCAA to profit off of student-athletes. This reasoning has led many people to try and incorporate change in the collegiate world. Student-athletes, particularly at “big time” schools, have been bringing in millions of dollars in for their universities. The universities are selling jerseys that have the athletes’ names on the back, but the student-athletes are not receiving anything from that (Chen, 2013). Student-athletes are not even allowed to sell their jerseys or other apparel that is given to them by the university. In 2010 the NCAA did an investigation and found out that AJ Green sold one of his jerseys for $1000...

Should Immigrants Have Healthcare

...Should immigrants have health care Did you know immigrants all around the world are sick and not getting health care because they are not from here. I agree that immigrants should have healthcare because they need to be strong and healthy to take care for their families. Kids are missing school because they are sick and their parents don't have money to visit the hospital. My first reason why i think immigrants should have healthcare is because they need to be strong to take care for their family and so they can work and have a better life. Also they need health care to take care of their kids because without healthcare they can't go visit the doctor and they will miss school a lot and they will stay behind. This is my first...

Organ Donation Persuasive Essay

...Why should someone donate their body to science, subjecting themselves to potential dissections or car crashes and so much more? What purpose is there to willingly allow one’s body to be disrespected? Those are potential questions one against body donations might pose, but I argue differently. Upon death, the cadaver is no longer the person once inhabiting the body. Experimenting or dissecting the cadaver for the betterment of mankind will not hurt them in any way and is not a sign of disrespect towards the person. If I did not qualify for organ donation, I personally would donate my body to science in order to better mankind, as my cadaver otherwise would have no purpose and as I do not perceive a cadaver as the person it once was. A dead, non-motile body has only a few options: rotting in the ground, lying uselessly in ashes in an urn, other methods of burial or...

4 Week Research Paper

...Why a School Week Should Only Be Four Days Have you ever wondered if a school week will be changed from a five day week to a four day week? Do you ever not want to go to school on monday because you haven’t had a enough time to get your homework over the weekend and you are worried you're going to get in trouble? A four day week is necessary for our children because the statistics show if we have a four day week they will achieve better results academically, better attendance, kids need more family time and students will have more time to complete their homework they didn’t get done. A four day week is needed in our country because the other countries have the statistics that supports them changing it. One reason people think Australia should change school to a four day week is in America about 100 schools use the four day system and 67% of 2,700 students prefer this system. People did research on this topic and they found that on average math scores increased by...

Should College Athletes Get Paid Essay

...Should College Athletes Get Paid? College athletes should be paid for playing at the college level. This topic is interesting to me because it has been a debatable topic for a long time. College athletes deserve to get a pay check because they are still responsible to keep their grades up while playing and training for football. They work harder than the pros because they have more of a motivation to get to the higher profession than someone who is already there. They can use that money to help support their families. The coaches are getting paid but they don’t play a sport or endure in a sport. The NCAA is making a profit out of them. In all honesty, the college athletes are one of the most hardest working athletes that don’t get paid. College...

Bullies Behind Bars

...Bullies Behind Bars Creating and Enforcing Bullying Laws in the United States ENG120 Abstract In the past decade there have been a growing number of teenage suicide attempts and successes. Many of these come from some form of bullying and harassment in our schools. Bullies leave scars on our children that last long into their adulthood; if they are lucky enough to make it to adulthood. This behavior has long been accepted as “boys will be boys.” Well boys are no longer boys and girls are sometimes more cruel than boys. It’s time we as parents and adults tell these bullies that their behavior has consequences and we as a society will no longer accept their behavior. Creating and Enforcing Bullying Laws in the United States. After my parents split up, life as I had known it for 9 years had changed. My father was gone and we were now living in a small apartment and my mother was on food stamps. I didn’t get my clothes from the store any longer. My clothes came from the church and lots of kids in school let me know it every day. I was called poor, told I was wearing others trash, called names and even tripped a few times. It only lasted a month or so, and then they moved on to the next one and left me alone. Today the bullies are going worldwide on the web. They are harassing you until you want to crawl in a hole and die and unfortunately some do just that. I was fortunate that my bullying experience was short lived, but it never left my mind. When I had my daughter...
