Topic: Why schools should start later
General Purpose: To persuade
Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience why schools should start later.
Central Idea: There are many benefits for starting school later, and just not liking school is not the only one.
INTRODUCTION
Attention-getter: how many of us get a regular eight hours of sleep? How many of us eats a healthy breakfast daily? Well I’ll show you how some of these factors that are in your daily routine can affect you in the present and future. Credibility Material: from the studies conducted by the Center for Disease Control (CDC), 69% of US high school students get less than 8 hours of sleep, more outstanding is 40% of students get less than 6 hours of sleep regularly. Relevance to Audience: the national sleep foundation suggests that adolescents, as in people ages 12-25, are supposed to get a minimum of 8.5 hours of sleep per night. That is me, you, and over a third of the population at this school. Preview of Speech: today I will be talking to you about the benefits of starting schools later, and how the pros greatly outweigh the cons. (Link: First we will discuss how many of us truly get enough sleep BODY
16% of adolescents get enough rest on a daily basis.
That means that 84% of us are at risk for driving “impaired.”
“Sleepiness can impair performance as much as or more so than alcohol,” proven studies by Dr. Powell in 2001.
(Link: next, we will discuss how this effects you on a daily level.)
78% of students skip breakfast.
Adults need breakfast daily, so they are at their best performance. Children need it for more reason than just that though. Growing brains and bodies requires frequent replenishment.
WebMD suggests that eating a wholesome meal rather than a junky breakfast or not one at all can cost

...THE GREAT RECESSION Since publication of Robert L. Hetzel’s he Monetary Policy of the Federal Reserve (Cambridge University Press, 2008), the intellectual consensus that had characterized macroeconomics has disappeared. hat consensus emphasized eicient markets, rational expectations, and the eicacy of the price system in assuring macroeconomic stability. he 2008–2009 recession not only destroyed the professional consensus about the kinds of models required to understand cyclical luctuations but also revived the credit-cycle or asset-bubble explanations of recession that dominated thinking in the nineteenth century and irst half of the twentieth century. hese “market-disorder” views emphasize excessive risk taking in inancial markets and the need for government regulation. he present book argues for the alternative “monetary-disorder” view of recessions. A review of cyclical instability over the last two centuries places the 2008–2009 recession in the monetary-disorder tradition, which focuses on the monetary instability created by central banks rather than on a boom-bust cycle in inancial markets. Robert L. Hetzel is Senior Economist and Research Advisor in the Research Department of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, where he participates in debates over monetary policy and prepares the bank’s president for meetings of the Federal Open Market Committee. Dr. Hetzel’s research on monetary policy and the history of central banking has appeared in publications...

American Inequality and Its Origins

...Brown and the Native Americans. Much of the history that historians write about don't always show precision. Since many historians only write about one side of history, it only makes it worse by not revealing the factuality of history and creates an erroneous image of what really took place. Many of our nation's great leaders have been distinguished as individuals who have the best interest of the country and every action they take on behalf of the country befittingly. For instance, in the book, Lies My Teacher Told Me, by James Loewen, he writes, "Under [president] Wilson, the United States intervened in Latin America more often than at any other time in our history." (Loewen, 16). What reason did the United States have to start an intervention in countries that are diminuitive in size and population and are poverty-stricken? The only thing that the United States gained from the intervention of the poor Latin American countries was merely for their own well-being. They imposed on those poor innocent people and gerrymandered the government for cheaper manual labor. The intervention in Latin America was never for accomodation, but for political...

...'prostitute' is a word for adults. How can I start a book with this apparent contradiction? But since, at every moment of our lives, we all have one foot in a fairy tale and the other in the abyss, let's keep that beginning. Once upon a time, there was a prostitute called Maria. Like all prostitutes, she was born both innocent and a virgin, and, as an adolescent, she dreamed of meeting the man of her life (rich, handsome, intelligent), of getting married (in a wedding dress), having two children (who would grow up to be famous) and living in a lovely house (with a sea view). Her father was a travelling salesman, her mother a seamstress, and her hometown, in the interior of Brazil, had only one cinema, one nightclub and one bank, which was why Maria was always hoping that one day, without warning, her Prince Charming would arrive, sweep her off her feet and take her away with him so that they could conquer the world together. While she was waiting for her Prince Charming to appear, all she could do was dream. She fell in love for the first time when she was eleven, en route from her house to school. On the first day of term, she discovered that she was not alone on her way to school: making the same journey was a boy who lived in her neighbourhood and who shared the same timetable. They never exchanged a single word, but gradually Maria became aware that, for her, the best part of the day were those moments spent going to school: moments of dust, thirst and weariness, with...

Farhoomand and Pauline Ngl [FedExI has built superior physical, virtual and people networks not just to prepare for change, but to shape change on a global scale: to change the way we all connect with each other in the new Network Economy. (1999 Annual Report) [FedExl is not only reorganizing its internal operations around a more flexible network computing architecture, but it's also pulling-in and in many cases locking-in customers with an unprecedented level of technological integration. (Janah and Wilder, 1997) ince its inception in 1973, Federal Express Corporation ('FedEx') had transformed itself from an express delivery company to a globallogistics and supply-chain management company. Over the years, the Company had invested heavily in IT systems, and with the launch of the Internet in 1994, the potential for further integration of systems to provide services throughout its customers' supplychains became enormous. With all the investment in the systems infrastructure over the years and the US$88 million acqrtisition of Caliber Systems, Inc., in 1998, the Company had built a powerful technical architecture that had the potential to pioneer in Internet commerce. However, despite having all the ingredients for the maltings of a successful e-business, the Company's logistics and supplychain operations were struggling to shine through the historical image of the Company as simply an express...
