INSERT TITLE HERE RING! RING! The alarm clock rings. The clock says 6:00 a.m. You drag yourself out of bed and do your normal morning routines. You are sleepy because you stayed up late writing an English essay. You don’t get to eat breakfast and your stomach is the only thing on your mind. This is an example of how early school times can result in less concentration in class and creating bad health habits such as skipping breakfast. According to Jennifer LeComte, director of the pediatric program at Christina Care’s Wilmington hospital health center, bad sleep habits can lead to obesity and diabetes, because the body’s regulation of sugar is thrown out of whack (Albright). According from the national Sleep Foundation form the Washington Post, when you are sleep deprived, you are impaired as driving with a blood alcohol content of .08%, which is illegal in many states. Furthermore, according to the National Highway Safety Traffic Administration, more than half of teens surveyed reported that they have driven a car while drowsy and that every year, an estimate of 100,000 accidents, 40,000 injuries, and 1,500 people are killed in the U.S. every year in crashes caused by drivers who are simply tried. Sleep deprivation causes students to be disoriented and have a possibility to make bad decisions. Therefore, sleep deprivation was the main reason of why students were as impaired with a blood alcohol content of .08% and why crashes happen every year from drivers who were simply tired. If this is the case then schools should not care about delaying school start times and spending extra money for transportation if it prevents thousands of deaths from causes like driving with sleep …show more content…
Although delaying schools start times might raise the costs of transportation, if beginning the school early in the morning has a negative impact on academic performance, early start times may not be worth the reduced costs. According to data from Wake County, North Carolina, they tested that delaying school start times by one hour, from roughly 7:30 to 8:30, increases standardized test scores by at least 2% in math and 1 % in reading (Edwards). These scores might not have looked like it raised that much but it largely affected students with below—average test scores and narrowed gaps in student achievement. If starting times just change by 1 hour and it helps a large amount of students be able to reach their full capability, the student’s education priority is higher than transportation

...over the Country dread nightfall, knowing they will have to wake up at a ridiculous time. The schools start at 8:00am for the kids and end at 2:50pm, some kids that must wake up at six o’clock to have enough time for their busses. Kids don’t have time to do sports, homework, and get at least 8 hours of sleep. Schools should take out all of the furlough days, and early releases and have schools start at 8:30, but still finishes at 2:50. Also, kids' brains aren't working fully that early in the morning. Why School Should Start Later

...School is a very interesting thing when it comes to learning, but sometimes and some subjects can make you want to fall asleep. I think on Friday’s, school should start way late on Fridays: like around 9:45 or 10:15! If school was to start on Friday’s it has to have reasons why. I looked up on google what the expert say and Dr.Paul Kelley says that Children 8-10 should start at 10:30 or later. Kelley called for an end to early starts at schools, colleges and university to “improve the lives of a generation”. An effect on students if there was to be a later day, is the sleep difference. An expert from CBS News says that middle schools should start later in the morning to give students their much-needed sleep. But Dr.Judith Owens says, “One of the issues is that kids are overscheduled, don’t give them so much work so they can be in bed before midnight. I agree with all these experts, but just because they’re experts doesn't mean they’re true. I only agree with two out of the 4 opinions from all of the doctors or professor’s opinions. I know that school is good for you but,why does it have to start so early? 9:15 would be fine!...

If school starts later at 10:00 am more students will be able to pay attention because they had enough sleep at night. “In more than 40 states, at least 75 percent of public schools start earlier than 8:30 a.m” (Frum). If school did start at 10 am then there would also be less tardies. This means that a lot of students in these schools are stressing out because the amount of homework they have. Teens that are entering college are the one having less sleep. “At the age of 16, the biological wake up time is around 8:00 a.m., and school should begin between 10:00 a.m. or 10:30 a.m. At 18 the biological wake up time is closer to 9:00 a.m., and a class time of 11:00 a.m. or 11:30 a.m. would be most beneficial”...
