The Misguided Myth Of College Education

...believe that in order to be successful you must have a college degree. While a college education has affected our great American culture and economy, the idea that college is the “right” and “responsible” decision for those who are pursuing the American dream is outdated and borderline dangerous. Today, many opportunities are given to everyone to receive higher educations. But this does not mean that everyone should attend a four year college. Everyone was not created equally in their educational abilities, everyone should not be pressured to attend a four year college but should be encouraged to go to a community college, vocational school, or job experience instead of being looked down upon in...

Liberal Arts Education

...Liberal Arts Education Now that I am in college, I have pondered upon whether a liberal arts education is better than a vocational education; a topic that did not cross my mind in high school. A liberal arts curriculum includes the studies intended to primarily provide general knowledge such as language, philosophy, literature, and abstract science and to develop general intellectual capacities, such as reason and judgment, as opposed to professional or vocational skills (merriam-webster.com).  As students wanting to achieve a higher education, we have to think about what we want for ourselves. Either you want to grow as an individual and obtain a major in whichever field you chose, or just learn what best interests you. People have many misconceptions toward what the liberal arts are and how they can benefit you. We often hear things like, “A liberal arts degree will not get you a real job.” or “A liberal arts degree is a luxury not a necessity.” Although this is what the majority of the people who are not aware about the actual facts say, this is not true. An examination of, The New Liberal Arts by author Sanford J. Ungar, and Are Too Many People Going to College? by author Charles Murray, will reveal to us why one gains more knowledge at a liberal arts school. Murray argues that a liberal arts education is only for the elite, but I believe that they shouldn't be the only ones to attend because my vision of a liberal arts college is one where all students come in with the...

Arguments Against Standardized Testing

...Standardized Testing Standardized testing should not be required for admission to college because it doesn't
really tell you anything. Why make someone take the ACT, SAT, or any IQ test just to see if their smart enough for college, or to even get in that specific college. Some people don't do well with test taking so they get a bad score. All that really shows if your good at test taking or not. This is why standardized test should be abolished from college admissions. A standardized test is called such because everyone takes the same test with the same questions, so ones performance can be compared to everyones else, in order for a relative score to be obtained (Lurie, Karen. "Standardized Testing.”). The first SAT was published in 1926 and administered 8,040 people. Standardized tests serve to offer measure of aptitude. There are standardized test that can measure school progress, intelligence, memory, and behavior capabilities. Some standardized tests are given to a whole group of people at once, others are given individually. There are also...

Higher Education

...ENGLISH 121 Paper #2 Higher Education Submitted by Kenneth Jones Paper submitted to Professor: David Bushelle KENNETH JONES PROFESSOR: DAVID BUSHELLE ENGLISH 121 HIGHER EDUCATION Should a High School Graduate seek a higher education? If so what kind or type, for some years now it has been a lot of controversy on why should every high school graduate go to a college or university. What about trade school or apprenticeships at a company. Students who enter the workforce immediately upon high school graduation now need at least the same level of skills and knowledge as students entering college, as both universities and employers seek the same core abilities. We could trace higher education back to the sixth century B.C. Even then they taught skills to live by not thing that a person would not use in his or her life time. Here is a brief history on Higher Education that I found very interesting I hope you do too. “The oldest institutions of higher (college or university) education were started on the island of Cos, Greece, in about the sixth century B.C. These schools primarily taught medicine but also covered topics concerning the nature of humanity and the universe. A group called the Pythagoreans, who were followers of the Greek philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras (c. 580–500 B.C.), started the first schools of higher education in Italy. They taught philosophy and math in Greek. The great Greek philosophers Socrates (470–399 B.C.), Plato...

America

...McCall Should Every American Go to College? “I’m going to college!” those four letter words rung through my head, as I walked across my high school stage. Shaking hands with the people who were becoming a part of my high school past. I than sat down into my seat and reflected on a previous conversation a classmate and I had. I was explaining to him about my college plans and by the end of the conversation, he uttered terrible words to himself. “Everyone is not going to college”. Even though he may have said it out of fear or worry for himself. I assured him that he will go to college and it is possible for anyone. Every American should go to college because it gives opportunities for greater employment, higher pay, and college experience. Graduating from a community or university will give you greater employment opportunities. Therefore, just having a degree can further your knowledge and give you that ambition to climb up the work force pyramid. Have you ever wondered, why your boss is in the position he has today? Well, it is because of working hard for years, challenging himself to courses that he may have felt were unnecessary, but in the end to be worth it, and waking up to do it all over again. Thomas Jefferson's Book Summary

...Crawford’s book is one that at first glance I thought would be some boring story-telling book about a guy who made a drastic change in careers. Basically about a guy who has a mid-life crisis and needed help finding his way back. The book, while on the surface seems like a little bibliography about Crawford’s life is actually more about human excellence and why it is undervalued today. According to the author Americans have lost the appreciation and value for hands on work because of the belief that the only valuable work is work that is performed intellectually. Crawford argues that high schools made a mistake by dismantling shop-class programs and instead preparing students to become “knowledge workers.” He says that our society believes...

Inventions, Education, Pollution

...Should everyone have a university education? University education is a part of our good life. At university students spend the most important years of theirs lives. Here they gain education, knowledge, but they must be honest and hard working. In my opinion higher education should have everyone, because intelligent people are more wanted in our society. In the first place, educated peoples have great future and better job, their life quality is higher, than of people without university education. It is the main reason why we should study in a university. On the another hand, some persons think that life should not be just learning. We have to live a free and independent life, we shouldn’t think about the future all the time. Sometimes people forget that education isn’t an important part of existence. Nevertheless, education is very expensive. Officially education is free, but reality shows different things. At universities there are students who pay big money for studies. And this is the main problem in enlightenment. So, not everyone can have a chance to study. In conclusion, I strongly believe that everyone should decide which way of life is more or less important. All in all, I think that having good brain and university education will change our lives for better and make us developed in this universe. An university education should be available to all those individuals who are READY AND CAPABLE of taking advantage of it. Truth be told, I wasn't EMOTIONALLY ready...
