Have you ever considered before that one day you would probably be addicted to something? Have you ever dreamed before that one day a little “box” called cell phone would change your lifestyle? Unfortunately those facts already happened, and they still influence especially youngsters. Choliz (2012) defined “addiction” as a term “refers to a relationship of dependence and a limitation on personal freedom”. Compared to elder adults, youngsters are not only less likely to resist the temptation, but also more easily to accept new conceptions and technologies. The rate of addiction among youngsters was almost two times higher than among adults (Nam, 2013). Hence, youngsters are considered as the main body of cell phone addiction. Although the consequence of cell phone addiction is not regarded as destructive as drug addiction, it is still of great severity. The symptoms of cell phone addiction are concluded by Choliz (2012) like the inability to control the usage, conflicts between family members, occupation of spare time and a sense of emptiness without cell phones. When dealing with the issue of cell phone addiction, it is ideal to analyze the reason behind the phenomenon. There are four main reasons why youngsters become addicted to cell phones: needs for social contacts, intrinsic attractions of cell phones, psychological factors and environmental pressures. Firstly, the increasing need for social contacts can be regarded as a dominant reason for the cell phone addiction. Nowadays, users would like to use cell phones every day to call friends, text someone or update their status in Facebook. Aoki and Downes (2001) mentioned a survey conducted by the Consumer Electronics Association. The survey found that 57% of cell phone users claimed

...hometown is a laid-back village on the outskirts of Beijing. It's a pretty appealing place—quiet, low-key—which dates back hundreds of years but was never known for anything special, so far as I'm aware. The immediate environment is relatively good and the soil is rather fertile. Small fields surround the village, separated here and there orchards. Most people from the village work the land. They're farmers and their ancestors have always been farmers, which naturally creates a certain mindset and character. Of course, many young people are unsatisfied with this type of life and its corresponding outlook, so some of them have chosen to leave. The village is aging rapidly and the population is decreasing. 2. Q: Do you like your hometown? Why or why not? A: Naturally I love my hometown. Small towns like mine are apt to produce really distinctive characters among the people. Local residents are familiar enough with one another that everyone finds a slightly different social role and takes her role seriously, as it is a form of her identity that allows him to deeply engage her neighbors. This, in some ways, is similar to the formation of a family, where we notice difference among each other more clearly. As a result of this phenomenon, in my view, it's often easier to find a broader range of personalities and interests in small towns than in large cities, where interaction is frequently more impersonal. I've learned more about humanity and the unique ways social life can nourish...

Case Study-Promiscuity

...Promiscuity- A Self-Destructive Behavior in Correlation with a Lack of Paternal Authority: A Single Case Study Rebecca M Bauman 2015 MAR LIB-495-GS001 Abstract Paternal authority, according to the existing literature, is of upmost importance to the healthy psychosexual development of a child. Women who were raised with a lack of paternal authority can often face significant setbacks when dealing with everyday life issues. Promiscuity as a self-destructive behavior has substantial consequences often resulting in mental and physical suffering. This qualitative single case study was designed to explore the correlation of promiscuity- as a self-destructive behavior with women who were raised in single-mother households where there was a lack of paternal authority. A single intrinsic case study was used to explore one woman’s battle with promiscuity. The data obtained formed a narrative generated by the triangulation of psychoanalytical therapy sessions, a client intake form and the woman’s journal. A case analysis was performed and later reviewed by an attending mental health clinician. The results indicated the woman manifests the self-destructive behavior of promiscuity at the expense of poor self-esteem which directly correlates with a lack of paternal authority. The disruption of the woman’s psychosexual development in childhood negatively altered her self-image. The woman uses transference in her intimate relationships as a desperate attempt to gain control of her...

Perceived Role of Entertainment Television in Shaping Social Behaviour of Teenagers

...CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 1.1 BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY The mass media, most especially television have gradually become a part of our daily lives, and sources of information, education and entertainment have been described as the primary functions of the media. Lasswell (1948) as cited in Folarin (2005, p.74) assigns three functions to the media: i. Surveillance of the Environment (the news function). ii. Correlation of the different parts of the Enviroment (the editorial function). iii. Transmission of the cultural heritage from one generation to the other (the cultural transmission function). The focus of the researcher in this study is not only on the entertainment function of the media, but the role the entertainment media especially television, plays in shaping social behaviour among teenagers in the society. Stephenson (1967) a British psychologist, as cited in Folarin (2005, p.170), divides man’s activities into work and play. The former involving reality and production, while the latter deals with entertainment, relaxation or self satisfaction. He further says that people use mass communication more as play than as work, more for pleasure and entertainment than for information and serious work. Folarin (ibid) corroborates this view by saying that one constant criticism of television in Nigeria is its focus on entertainment rather than on development purposes. There is no doubt that the impact of the media on young people’s lives is broadly considered within...
