Why The World Need Nuclear Energy
Thermal power stations harness nuclear energy by utilizing the thermal energy released from burning fossil fuels released from the nucleus of atoms through nuclear fission taking place in a nuclear reactor. Nuclear power has enormous advantages regarding the production costs and environmental impacts.
Nuclear power is a critical technology of the power production because of the restricted carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. The entire lifecycle of energy production emits greenhouse gases that are comparable to those of wind energy (Schmidt et al.). The CO2 recommended by the scientific communities such as the Kyoto Protocol is at the maximum of 0.4 billion metric tons that these systems have reached according to the available records (Freedman and Jaggi). For example, in Europe, nuclear plants saves about 0.7 billion metric tons of CO2 emissions annually which is much higher than the Kyoto Protocol requirements (Sada). Also, in the U.S. nuclear power plants saved equivalent amounts of CO2 in 2004. According to the climate change brochure, nuclear energy production saves the world 2 billion metric tons of the greenhouses gases emission to every year that makes about 7 percent of global emissions. Therefore, the world needs to embrace this technology for power production.
Track records indicate that nuclear power provides reliable electricity compared to other sources of energy besides clean production. It follows low natural gas prices of accessible shale gas. Wind and solar power are becoming increasingly widespread, but their intermittent and variable supply makes them poorly suited for large-scale use in the absence of an affordable way to store electricity. On the other hand, nuclear energy is increasingly affordable as a result of readily available resources which can produce a substantial amount of power if the system engages

Pros And Cons Of Nuclear Power

...In this day and age, nuclear power is seen as a menacing and unnecessary solution to providing the world with its energy and electricity. However, when looking at the facts nuclear power is far more beneficial than harmful, especially compared to some of the most common sources of energy being widely used today. Nuclear power has many advantages, some of them being environmental, international relations and safety. Some may argue that nuclear power may damage the environment with waste and mining, however recent research has proved that nuclear power is one of the more environmentally friendly sources of energy. These advantages greatly outweigh the possible disadvantages, making nuclear power the better alternative for energy and electricity....

...Why nuclear power will never supply the world's energy needs Nuclear power plant in Dukovany, Czech Republic. Image credit: Petr Adamek. (PhysOrg.com) -- The 440 commercial nuclear reactors in use worldwide are currently helping to minimize our consumption of fossil fuels, but how much bigger can nuclear power get? In an analysis to be published in a future issue of the Proceedings of the IEEE, Derek Abbott, Professor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Adelaide in Australia, has concluded that nuclear power cannot be globally scaled to supply the world’s energy needs for numerous reasons. The results suggest that we’re likely better off investing in other energy solutions that are truly scalable. As Abbott notes in his study, global power consumption today is about 15 terawatts (TW). Currently, the global nuclear power supply capacity is only 375 gigawatts (GW). In order to examine the large-scale limits of nuclear power, Abbott estimates that to supply 15 TW with nuclear only, we would need about 15,000 nuclear reactors. In his analysis, Abbott explores the consequences of building, operating, and decommissioning 15,000 reactors on the Earth, looking at factors such as the amount of land required, radioactive waste, accident rate, risk of proliferation into weapons, uranium abundance and extraction, and the exotic metals used to build the reactors themselves. "A nuclear power station is resource-hungry and, apart from the fuel, uses many...

Nuclear Energy

...Should our reliance on nuclear energy sources be expanded in an effort to fuel the future? Today there is a great concern about our carbon emissions and other pollutants because of their adverse affects on our climate. Thus alternative sources of energy are being sought out, such as solar, wind, natural gas, and nuclear energy. Many have found themselves opposing nuclear due to past errors, waste management, safety features, and financial concerns. However, these issues are being addressed as promising new reactors are being designed. Nuclear energy has some clear benefits when compared to some of the drawbacks of other methods. Natural gas will most likely release too much carbon dioxide in the long run to be effective, wind and solar energy are too intermittent and costly to function as a large-scale solution, and hydropower may not be able to expand easily easily enough to make a lasting difference (“Why We Still Need Nuclear Power”). With very little carbon dioxide emissions, relatively cheap energy generation, and an impressive reliability record, nuclear power proves itself to be an option to be explored in a country where electricity generation emits more carbon dioxide than transportation or industry. There are many safety concerns surrounding nuclear energy, but the industry has learned a lot from previous mistakes and many new safety measures are being tested and implemented (“Nuclear Now”). Previous failings with nuclear power, such as the Fukushima disaster,...

Essay On Low Carbon Economy

...Essay – Low Carbon Economy The world population is said to be about 7.2 billion people at present time. The estimated increase by the end of the twenty first century is expected to be about 9 billion people. Therefore, this increase is expected to have a strain on the world’s economy (Turn down the Heat: Why a 4°C Warmer World Must Be Avoided pg44). Because more will need to be produce in terms of energy, food, health care, education and also to maintain the general wellbeing of the world’s population. So it can be seem that if the world continue on its current path there will need to be a greater need for fossil fuel use. Fossil fuel, the main source of energy that runs the world’s economy. But the burning of fossil fuel is being said by...

Nuclear Energy

...Nuclear Energy Research Paper Global warming is a major issue in today’s world that affects many people, animals, economies, and society as a whole. What is global warming? Global warming is the rising average temperature of Earth’s atmosphere and oceans and its projected continuation. It’s been constantly rising over the past 100 years because of major contributions which include: greenhouse gases (especially CO2) being emitted, industrialization, burning of fossil fuels, and the increase in population. Global warming was first discovered in 1896 by a Swedish scientist named Svante Arrhenius who proposed an idea that there is a relation between atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations and temperature. He later then described, by comparing carbon dioxide levels, infrared absorption, surface temperature of the earth, and human activity, that global warming would rise. Other scientists didn’t believe this idea stating that natural forces would cancel out human activity that releases carbon dioxide. It wasn’t until 1988 that it was finally acknowledged that global warming is present because of how much warmer it was than the 1800s. Since then, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was founded which looks at scientific, technical, and socio-economic information that relates to human induced climate change and figures out plans and ideas to decrease and slow down the rate at which the climate is getting hotter. However, there are still disagreements to this day whether or...

Alternative Energy

...Alternative Energy Alternative Energy Energy is an extremely important resource for people and people can’t live without energy. When energy vanishes from people’s life can cause of paralyzed international institutions. The common energy which people use every day is a fossil fuel such as coal, oil and natural gas. Unfortunately, people face some serious problems with above energy sources such as exhaust resources, greenhouse effect and diverse environment pollution. All of the world barrels of oil reserves have already declined and glaciers are melting. If people don’t invest to find new energy sources, a lot of big problems will come in the future. Tues, creating a new energy could be solutions for the problems which people have so far and in a future. In this respect, the alternative energy sources that have become a hot issue in the world are solar energy, nuclear energy and wind power. Energy Problems People all of world realized energy problems that people face so far. There are not only energy problems but also environmental problems too. The energy sources that people every day use are fossil fuels and oil. Stein and Powers (2011) explained disposal of fossil fuels are cause of environmental problems such as global warming. People need to find out the ways to avoid greenhouse effect. Other kinds of fossil fuels such as coal or oil are also not a perfect energy. They have some toxic. There are some problems about coal. Coal can’t use for mobile applications...

The Importance Of Nuclear Power In America

...once stated, “There is an urgent need to stop subsidizing the fossil fuel industry, dramatically reduce wasted energy, and significantly shift our power supplies from oil, coal, and natural gas… energy sources.” McKibben is just one of millions of Americans who continue to search for a viable source of energy that can power the world in a efficient, and safe manner. This is why America needs to convert to nuclear power as our source for energy. Although some say nuclear plants are major targets for terror attacks, nuclear power is the clearest choice for America’s energy because it is safe, extremely efficient, and presents no real threat to the environment. Firstly, nuclear power is an extremely safe option for our energy. According to The New York Times (2011), “American nuclear safety regulators… determined that the simultaneous failure of both emergency shutdown systems that are designed to prevent a core...

Energy

...Energy: When I hear the words nuclear it gives me the impression that it is unsafe for humans and the environment. The nuclear power catastrophe of Japan is a good example why I believe that nuclear energy risks out way the benefits. “A major benefit of nuclear energy is that it releases massive amounts of energy through a process known as nuclear fission” (Turks, & Bensel 2011.) In an Internet article (time for change 2012) states the following risks of nuclear energy: The disadvantages of nuclear energy includes the following * Waste from nuclear energy is extremely dangerous * The consequences of an accident would be devastating to both humans and nature * Nuclear power plants could be preferred targets for terrorist attacks * Nuclear energy is Uranium, which is a scarce resource * Takes 20 to 30 years to build (in the United States) After the incident with Japan many would think that countries would shy away from using nuclear power plants as an energy source. But according to internet article (Modern power system 2012) World energy Council reports nuclear energy one year after Fukushima, that about 50 countries are operation building, or considering nuclear power as part of their energy mix and that 63 nuclear power are currently being built worldwide, including 26 in China, ten in Russia, and seven in India.” Wind energy: Wind energy is a lot safer the nuclear energy and better for the environment as it captures the energy...

Is Globalization a Positive or Negative Development for the World?

...the world? INTRODUCTION What is globalization? Is it the global amalgamation of national economies, socio cultural, technological and political forces into a single and unified community? Is globalization, a strength to achieve prosperity, freedom and economic growth? Or is it rather a force that can cause exploitation of the developing world, environmental devastation or suppression of human rights? The question now is that is globalization ‘good’ or ‘bad’? Since the commencement of globalization, the global economy has boomed at a very great rate. It has increased the living standards of the people in underdeveloped and developed countries. It has helped in fair worldwide spread of wealth, improved the variety of services and goods offered in different countries. Globalization has created jobs for people in underdeveloped and developing countries, companies sought to invest in underdeveloped countries where the cost of production will be minimal as compared to investing in developed regions. Yet globalization is criticized, mainly because of the effects it has on the society, environment and culture. Globalization has created competition between economies that compete vigorously with each other to achieve superiority. Such completion has caused more devastation and exploitation. Globalization has affected the financial market, economy, health, environment and culture. In this research project, the positive and negative aspects of development of nuclear program...

Nuclear Energy as an Alternative Energy for the Future

...Can nuclear energy be a main alternative energy socio-economically rather than other alternative energy to decrease global warming? Introduction Nowadays it seems that most people recognize about the severity of global warming. Houghton (1997) believes that increasing alternative energy rather than using fossil fuels is very important to decrease global warming. Therefore, I chose this topic: Can nuclear energy be a main alternative energy socio-economically rather than other alternative energy to decrease global warming? This assignment will identify why serious global warming started and discuss about nuclear energy as an alternative energy. Finally, it will be examined how people think about nuclear energy used to decrease global warming. Global warming by human activity According to Houghton (1997), since Industrial Revolution fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas are being burnt worldwide rapidly and a lot of carbon dioxide from burning the fossil fuels is promoting global warming. Giddens (1998) stated that many scientists believe the main cause of global warming is carbon dioxide increased. Carbon dioxide which is one of green house gas such as methane, water vapour and nitrous oxide absorbs heat and then re-emit on the earth. So, with carbon dioxide increase, temperature rises on the earth (Carter, 2010) Wyatt (2008) stated that “Industrial revolution stimulated a major increase in production and mass consumption. The ancient sources of power-human...

Process Analysis

...Alternative Energy The continued use of the planet’s fossil fuels will eventually come to an end and will require an ultimatum to be made. Other sources of energy must be found to sustain this dependency that society has created, so it can continue to fuel our everyday needs. Although scarcity is a leading factor in the search for newer resources, the damaged caused by fossil fuels need to be reversed, including pollution and global warming. Every day there are more and more advancements, innovations, or even inventions of new alternative resources that need to be taken advantage of to maintain a stable and reliable source of energy. Alternative energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydrogen energy are more durable and efficient to be used as a substitute for current natural resource uses. Foremost, fossil fuels have been a primary source for energy for years, and had some major consequences alongside them. Pollution is no new name to the harm our environment receives and it comes from the burning of fuel. As well as pollution being created, global warming, which is a huge debate in today’s society, is also caused by burning fossil fuels (Rinkesh “What are fossil fuels”). Not only does it damage our environment, but it causes health problems for its wildlife and our own lives. These hazardous effects will have a long term duration and require a cleaner solution and that is natural resources (Rinkesh “What are fossil fuels”). These alternative energy sources would need to be...

Nuclear Energy: the Best Help We Have with the Energy Crisis

...Nuclear Energy: The best help we have with the energy crisis An Ho Brigham Young University Abstract We are facing many problems in today’s world, like: starvations in Africa, the natural resources are running out, or terrorism and genocides in Africa… But in this paper, the topic will be about the energy crisis that we are facing, which I think is affecting other problems as well. In fact, according to the newest prediction of the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the electricity demand in the United States will increase about 28 percent by 2035; and the world demand for electricity will increase 2.3 percent each year until 2035( EIA, 2011). If we keep producing energy like we are doing now, burning fossil fuels like coal, oil, we would face tremendous problems. Not just the resources might run out, but we would also face pollution, and green-house effects. Failure to develop a new technology that would produce enough clean power, would be devastating result. So when we are trying to find a new technology, why don’t we use a way we already have? I propose nuclear energy, because it will produce clean energy, and it also is more effective than wind or solar power. This is an interesting introduction TO your paper, but it needs to be a summary OF your paper. Nuclear Energy: The best help we have with the energy crisis You need an introduction with a thesis. Power plants are releasing carbon dioxide into the air. According to the Environmental...
