One of them is students’ long hair was clipped to the skull, sometimes as part of a public ritual in which the child was forced to renounce his or her Indian origins.
Many of the books mentioned drugs, which reminds me of the drug war we mentioned in class. Drugs have always been a big problem in the United States. Not only indians, but all races in America have people are addicted to drugs.
In the chapter of the “The Trial Of Thomas Builds-The-Fire”, Thomas went to jail because he was accused of killing two white soldiers. The truth, however, is that Thomas was defending himself. These minorities are often not arrested for real crime, but because of racial discrimination by the police.

...hotel located at 63rd and Wallace. I was able to attend the opening ceremony of the Chicago World's Fair, and boy it was crowded. I have never seen this many people gathered in one place. President Grover Cleveland was also at the fair and pressed the button signaling the opening of the Chicago World's Fair. The one thing that surprised me the most was this ride called the Ferris Wheel. I have never seen anything like it before, it is like a big wheel that spins in a circle and you can ride in it. For every person that road in the Ferris Wheel they received a free sample of Cracker Jack, which was weird version of popcorn. The second day of the fair I was interested in seeing a show called Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show which was located right next to the fair. A lot of people attended the show, and it was worth the money I spent. I also visited the Manufactures and Liberal Arts Building which had many sorts of art. The ones that really caught my attention were the exotic art which seemed to be very popular. I also got to visit a very unique invention called the clasp locker. It is suppose to change the way we close things like on clothes. Their were far to many extraordinary attractions that I could describe and all of them were fascinating. I think the Chicago World's fair will change society and bring our nation closer together. The importance of some of the attractions such as the clasp locker will affect society in multiple different ways and in the future be known...

Buffalo Bill

...westering pioneers. The first Codys in America were Huguenots who fled France for the Isle of Jersey to escape religious persecution. By 1698 they owned land in Massachusetts. Isaac was born in Ontario in 1811 and grew up in Ohio. Twice widowed, he wed schoolteacher Mary Bonsell Laycock in 1840 in Cincinnati. She was descended of Pennsylvania Quaker pioneers. With Martha, Isaac's five-year-old daughter from his first marriage, they moved to Scott County, Iowa, where six of their seven children were born: Samuel, 1841; Julia, 1843; William, 1846; Eliza, 1848; Helen, 1850; and May, 1853. Only prolonged illness kept Isaac from striking out for California during the gold rush. After the accidental death of Samuel in 1853, the Codys headed west, moving briefly to Missouri then to Kansas where Isaac supplied hay and wood to Ft. Leavenworth and traded with the Kickapoo Indians. Another son, Charles, was born in 1855. Isaac, a man of principal and an active civic leader, was stabbed in 1854 while making a speech against slavery. The attack did not deter him from his economic or political activities, but its lingering effects led to his death in 1857. Bill ("Willie" to his family) and Julia supported and cared for the younger children and their ailing mother. Martha left to marry and died shortly thereafter. Bill took a job as a herder and mounted messenger with Russell, Majors, and Waddell, the Leavenworth freighting firm and organizers of the Pony Express. A year later he accompanied...

Myth of the Cowboy

...Reality Eclipsing Romance The American Cowboy, by reason of his picturesqueness, was a prime subject for entertainments like the Wild West show. However, the limitations of popular entertainment caused William Cody to stress the cowboy’s attractive charm to the exclusion of other qualities. Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, formed in 1883 and lasting until 1913, romanticized versions of a time and place, and shaped the myth of the Wild West, including the glamorized image of the cowboy. When the world spun into the twentieth century, millions of people believed they recalled the American Wild West because “they had seen it, full of life and color, smoking guns and galloping horses, presided over by the most recognizable celebrity of his day: William F. Cody, or Buffalo Bill.” Spectators accepted the vivid personal memories that the Wild West show generated as historical truth. Although William F. Cody claimed that the motive behind Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show was to preserve “The Great West that Was,” his dramatized and inaccurate portrayals belied the true portrait of the American Cowboy to the public. At one time or another, William Cody performed the duties of a U.S. Army Scout, Indian Fighter, rancher, businessman, and world-renowned entertainer, but still, Cody never actually worked as a cowboy. Cody claimed that he staged his memories, “in the hope of giving permanent form to the history of the Plains” However, he contradicts this claim with his account of the obsession...

The New West Frontier

...contribution of American Studies to scholarly interpretations of the past. Richard Slotkin is part of a group called “Old West” historians who ascribe to the Myth-and-Symbol School when interpreting American history. This thought-process stresses a collection of popular sentiments of the Frontier era in order to create an environment that has some structure. A result of this approach is that it allows continuity to the reader when studying the frontier. For instance, Slotkin notices in his analysis of “The Adventures of Col, Daniel Boone that: “Filson creates a character who becomes the archetypal hero of the American frontier, copied by imitators and plagiarists and appearing innumerable times under other names and in other guises -- in literature, the popular arts, and folklore -- as the man who made the wilderness safe for democracy” (Slotkin 268-69) This shows how his character became an archetype to himself and all other frontiersmen. Because of this, the circumstances may change in the frontier, but its actors do not. As Slotkin describes the character of he furthers this argument and identifies “the most distinctive trait of Boone’s character was his love for the wild land” (Slotkin 298). While this approach is valuable due to minimal historical documentation, its methodology is intrinsically too simple to be taken seriously. Additionally, “Old West” perspectives usually only interpret the traces of the “white imperialist”. However, starting in the 1960’s a new wave of...

There's a Man in the Habit of Hitting Me on the Head with an Umbrella

...were too scared to go outside of their homes. Based on detailed cases analysis, the detective Richard, who was well known in Police Department, judged that these cases were more likely to be done by a certain person or a same group, because these series of cases were stupendously similar to each other. All the decedents were surgeons from many hospitals in this town. And all the surgeons were killed through some sharp tools like scalpels, and their corpses were abandoned in the wild field by the murderer. These incidents caused a impact on all the surgeons in this town, and they felt frightened. They did not know if these nightmares would fall upon their heads. The only one point that confused Richard was that all the crime scenes were left in a undisturbed wild field. He wondered if the surgeons who had been killed had appeared obediently followed the murderer to the wild field without a struggle. The more surprising thing was that policemen could not find any trace of wrestling in the crime scenes. Why surgeons did not try any possible way to resist with the murderer? Were they are bewitched by the murderer? Multitudinous questions plagued Richard. When it came to the surgeons, Richard did not have good feeling for them. One year ago, on a cold night, Richard’s wife Vivien suddenly felt great pain that from her stomach. At that time, Richard was chasing several criminals in the wild field. ...plants and animals, settlement in permanent small villages and the appearance of such crafts as pottery and weaving. This article compares and contrasts how the Neolithic people use a number of strategies in New Stone Age. The New Stone Age followed Paleolithic Period and it precedes the Bronze Age. During the Neolithic Age, different kinds of animals were tamed, which showed their relationship with the humans just as in the Old Stone Age. For example, first, dogs were wolves that hunted the humans at their campgrounds. They came to realize later that the wolf puppies could be tamed and coached to hunt other wild animals. The dog’s strains that grew eventually showed skills in controlling herds like sheep. In addition, the first domesticated animals were sheep, goats and pigs in the Middle East around 8500 and 700 B.C. (Lavin, 2011). However, the horned wild cattle, which could defend themselves and could run faster, were not tamed. On the contrary, some archeologists argue that domesticating animals were in the beginning motivated by spiritual views rather than the wish for clothing and a new source of food,...
