Will Your Job Be Exported In “Will Your Job Be Exported?” Alan S. Blinder argued that the greatest problem for the next generation of American workers may not be lack of education, but that of moving jobs overseas. Blinder states “demand for labor appears to have shifted toward the college-educated and away from high school graduates and dropouts” (p. 8).
The main point that Blinder is making in this article is the fact that more and more jobs are going overseas. It doesn’t matter of they are low-end service jobs or high-end computer jobs. The author is persuading American’s to get trained for personal service jobs (such as Barbers, Doctor’s, plumbers, janitors). Blinder starts out the story with a great quote by Edmund Burke “You can never plan the future by the past”. This was a great opening to the article. He wraps up the article with another quote, by Churchill, “You can always count on Americans to do the right thing – after they’ve tried everything else”. I think this was a great way to wrap up the point he was trying to get across. The essay is easy to follow with the way the paragraphs are broken up. He supports his thesis by articles he refers to and statistics he quotes.
The author feels that education is still important. He feels that teachers and health-care workers are people that are still in high demand and these jobs cannot be moved overseas. I would agree that education is important for individuals to get good paying jobs.
I believe the author’s ideas are ethical. He is basically telling American’s to go to school, and stay in jobs that would be protected from being moved overseas. It is important to keep the jobs here in America. Blinder, Alan S. Will Your Job Be Exported?

...Creating Your Dream Job Tanishia Skipper Denise Frevert Human Resource Management December 2, 2012 Create a job description and specifications for your dream job. My dream job would be a fashion buyer (you may know it as apparel buyer). I have always love high end fashion. As a child I would go into my mom’s closet and dress myself with her jewelry, pumps and different high end clothes. My mother always had different designer closes and shoes. I do believe that is where I began to love fashion because she would always dress very stylish. I grew to love to dress other people and show them how to put stuff together. My sisters would come and ask me what looked good together and what did not. By the time that I was 18 I would have my family members asking me about fashion. Then before I knew it it was something that I was doing naturally. I have come to realize that most people have no idea as to what all is involved in fashion. People do not understand that fashion does not only include putting colors together. I have a cousin that is a fashion buyer with Neiman-Marcus. She has been working for them for about 10 years now. She went to the University of New York to earn her degree in Business Management. She has been my inspiration as a fashion buyer. Being in this field of fashion allows you to travel across the country and it also allows you to be able to attend the different fashion weeks across the country. I am attending Strayer University and......

Will Your Job Be Exported

...In the article Will Your Job Be Exported written by Alan S. Blinder, the author talked about what kind of job can be offshored. At the beginning of the article, the author said that for about a quarter-century, the U.S. workforce has “turned ferociously against the low skilled and the uneducated”. (Blinder, 2006, p.9) For this phenomenon, people in the U.S. took some measures in the 1990s to improve things for the average worker, but in this decade, “little or no mitigation has been attempted”. (Blinder, 2006, p.10) However, there is an exception: people in the U.S. have tried to keep more young people in the school and improve the quality of education. This brings the author to the future, he thought “the greatest problem for the next generation of American workers may not be lack of education, but rather “offshoring”—the movements of jobs overseas”. (Blinder, 2006, p.10) The author claimed that traditionally, “we think of service jobs as being largely immune to foreign competition”. But the author believed that service-sector offshoring would eventually exceed manufacturing-sector offshoring with the development of technology. The author stated that the key to distinguish the job can be offshored or not is not “the required levels of skills and education”, (Blinder, 2006. p.12) which is the central point of this essay. The work situation has changed into many impersonal work can be offshored. Thus, the essay gives the advice of “prepare yourself for a high-end service......

My dream job is to be a Register Nurse, ever since I was a little girl I dream of being a nurse to help people. Register Nurse is a nurse who has graduated from a nursing program at a college or university and has passed a national licensing exam. As a child I always play that I was the nurse and my cousins and brothers were my patients. I would provide care and medication to make them feel better: stickers were bandages and water or juice was the medication. It feels good helping others in need and it’s a pleasure to feel needed. Creating a job description and specifications for your dream job. When creating my dream job I need to know the basic functions of my job description and job specifications. Job description is a lists of tasks, duties and responsibilities that a particular job entails (Denisi /Griffin, 2012). A job specification focuses more on the individual who will perform the job, which indicate the knowledge, abilities, skills and other characteristics (Denisi/ Griffin, 2012). These are some of the job description and specification with this profession as registered nurses that I will typically be responsible in order to perform my job: * Record patients' medical histories and......

Job Hopping How It Affects Your Career Success

...Is job-hopping and career success related to each other? What is the effect of one on the other? How long is too long for staying in a company? I must admit, the resumes that pass by my desk makes me conclude that job-hopping is far too common. Job hoppers do it for various reasons. More often than not they may not know what they are getting into. Sometimes, it is because they do not know what they want and hence are not ready for the challenges that lay ahead of them. Job-hopping and career success is related to one another. In my opinion, job-hopping affects career success in a negative manner. Consider this, what signals are you sending to your potential employer if you job-hop too often? The Two-Year Rule I have a two-year rule that I tell my staff and potential employees. The two-year rule is this – you must be willing to commit mentally to spend at least two years in the company before you quit. The reason is this; you need to deal with the learning curve. If you job-hop too often, you learn nothing substantial. For me, it takes you at least a year to know the ins and outs of the company. Then another year before you can eventually be truly productive in adding value to the company. To see the true results of your contribution to the company, for me it takes at least two years. So, if you are prone to job-hopping and career success is on your mind, then it is time to rethink. Training You Many well-established companies have training programs...

Your First Day on Your First Job

...Your First Day on Your First Job ‘You got the job! You got the job!’ were the words that joyfully rang out from the fast stuttering mouth of my closest neighbor, Maggie. She brought the good news that her boss, Regina Dumas, had agreed to employ me as a secretary for the non-government organization ‘Agency For Rural Transformation’. I couldn’t contained myself and exclaimed ‘Yes, I did it! Finally I can work and earn my own money!’ All too soon the day came for me to head off for my first day of work. I woke at 4:30 a.m., too excited to sleep anymore but anxious to start the journey to my workplace. ‘Make sure to drink at least a cup of tea’ was the forceful sound of my mother’s voice. She was happy for me, and wanted to ensure that I had a good start before beginning the workday. By 7:00 a.m., I was fully dressed in my long sleeve blue pant suit, paired with a florescent blouse and accessorized with my black shoes and brown leather bag. I kissed my mom goodbye and waited outside the house on the verandah for the sound of the blaring horn from the hired bus to take us to the workplace, a full seventeen miles from home. For the most part, the journey from St. Andrew’s to the parish of St. George’s was a smooth and uneventful ride. I travelled through the main winding mountainous road which took me through the rain forest, with its luscious pine trees. With the windows open, the fresh morning breeze smoothly bathed my face, giving it a refreshing feeling. The scent of......
