William Barret Travis: A True American Hero

What would it be like to live in the 1800’s, fight at the Alamo, or be a leader? It would be hard, right ? Moving away from your loved ones, your family, just to risk your life for others it would take a lot of bravery for that. William Barret Travis actually had to do this, but his life was more challenging than what you think. Travis had a very accomplished lifetime, even if his lifetime was only 27 years long. He leads the Alamo , fought at the Alamo , abandoned his family and so much more he didn’t have the best life, but he did have the life of an outstanding American hero.
Although, not every accomplished life started off great in the beginning, Travis’ childhood wasn’t so amazing. Travis had been the first of eleven children yet he loved all of his siblings. When Travis’ was …show more content…
He then figured out his wife had feelings for a “riverboat gambler” and was cheating on him. So Travis killed the “riverboat gambler” and buried him in a Jewish cemetery. After his crime Travis abandons his wife, his son, and his unborn daughter and moved to Texas to fight in the Texas Battles. He ended up in a small town called Anahuac located east of the Galveston Bay. Travis then listed his marital status as single, even though he was married. He wrote letters to officials asking for reinforcements in the Alamo, but only 35 men came from Gonzalez making the amount of men to approximately 183. Travis addressed one of his letters to “To the People of the Texas and All Americans in the World.” on February 24. A couple days later Santa Anna arrived at the Alamo with more than enough help , but it was too late. At dawn on March 6, 1836 there was an assault on the Alamo the Mexicans overpowered the Texans in about a few hours Travis died at the beginning of the battle with only one bullet to his head.
