The first leading psychologist and philosopher of the late nineteen centuries was William James. James was born in New York city on January 11, 1842, he was the first child of Henry James and Mary Walsh. During James’s childhood, he was educated through tutoring and private schools, including his siblings (Pomerleau). As he got older, his family move to Geneva, Paris where James was inspired to be an artist or a scientist as he went to school. While his family move back to the USA and settle in Rhode Island; James found interest in painting and science, he later began working with William Hunt in 1858. James didn’t think being an artist was in his best interest, so he decided to attend Lawrence Scientific School at Harvard in 1861. When James …show more content…
A year later, James began to teach anatomy and physiology. His life starts getting where he wanted it. Wayne P. Pomerleau states, by the mid-eighteen-seventies, he was teaching psychology there, using the physiological approach he had learned in Germany and establishing the first psychology laboratory in America. James had gone to Germany back in mid-1863 to study physiology and medicine, but came back to the United states because of his health. In 1878, decided to write a psychology text book. James was determined to write a text book he began teaching philosophy in 1879. He published “The Sentiment of Rationality” which was his first important article in his new discipline (Pomerleau). On the other hand, James became a full-time professor in philosophy and psychology in the late 1880s. However, it took him 12 years to finish “Principles of Psychology” in 1890, which he wasn’t satisfied with the book. William James didn’t finale his career with just one book; in 1897 he published his first philosophical book “The Will to Believe and Other Essays in Popular Philosophy” and it was dedicated to Charles Sanders Peirce (Pomerleau). According to Wayne P. Pomerleau, two years after that in 1899 he also published “Talks to Teachers on Psychology and to Students on Some of Life’s Ideals.” William James had focused on the development his own philosophy by writing essays and doing …show more content…
Pragmatism is the truth of theories or beliefs in terms of success. James use pragmatism to tell the truth on different optical. Pragmatic is the theory of truth as which James considered. Wayne P. Pomerleau states “For James, the “reality” with which truths must agree has three dimensions: (1) matters of fact, (2) relations of ideas (such as the eternal truths of mathematics), and (3) the entire set of other truths to which we are committed. To say that our truths must “agree” with such realities pragmatically means that they must lead us to useful consequences.” This is simply how James explains his way of looking at pragmatism. He also wanted people to lead with useful consequences, meaning if one was to do something it should have a reason behind it. On the other hand, James was a member of the school of functionalism, however, the goal of functionalism was to understand why animals and humans have developed the mental process that they currently possess (Stangor). James had developed a consciousness in functionalism, whereas the consciousness help people adapt to the environment.
