The Vagueness of Words: The Plight of the “Grotesque”

Winesburg, Ohio, a short story cycle written by the American author Sherwood Anderson depicts a rather interesting portrait of an American Midwestern small town at the beginning of the twentieth century. Within this citizenry, Anderson draws attention to the distortion of each character in the book as a result of norms and traditions that led them into becoming “grotesques” as described in the prologue (The Book of the Grotesque). Among the exemplary stories written by Anderson, “Hands” and “Mother” are great at fulfilling the intention to reveal the inability of words to capture, express and explain the kinds of truth in life - underlying the main problem within human society.
In “Hands”, Anderson begins by describing explicitly Wing Biddlebaum as “a fat little old man”, which clearly captured the essence of being a grotesque. Grotesque as defined by the Oxford Dictionaries (2013) means that the object is odd and unnatural in shape, appearance or character. His grotesqueness is then amplified by the illustration of a group of youths and maidens coming home from work and one of the girls bully him by sarcastically commenting on his hair even though he was bald (9). His unconscious gesture of nervously fiddling his bare white forehead as mentioned by Anderson just shows how absurd he was in the eyes of society. This action in the beginning of the story proves that Wing Biddlebaum is an outlier, someone who is “forever frightened and beset by a ghostly band of doubts” and did not think of himself as “in any way a part of the life of the town where he had lived for twenty years” (27). However, through Wing Biddlebaum’s later conversations with the character George Willard, it can be seen that Wing tries hard to put his ideas into words and make others understand. Besides the short emotional outbursts like “you must try to forget all you have learned,” Wing particularly uses his overactive hands to deliver his message across to George and it unfortunately frightened the latter (13). Anderson notes that in the past, Wing Biddlebaum (then called Adolph Myers) was once a gentle schoolmaster which had been accused of molesting his student because in his excitement he would “stroke the shoulders” and “touch the hair” of his students. All these years after fleeing from the town in Pennsylvania, he still tries to keep his hands hidden, implicitly trying to shy away from the outside world. His past unfortunately just gave him the conclusive idea that he will forever be an outcast. To Anderson, the hands are one of the most important tools aside from language. It is needed to conduct human interactions but may at times be subject to misinterpretation through overuse. The denial of society by misreading the language of Wing’s hands led Wing to turn away from social life, and just like “the beating of the wings of an imprisoned bird” (11); he was unable to achieve what he wanted- to communicate his true feelings.
The story “Mother” begins by Anderson giving an explicit portrayal of Elizabeth Willard- George Willard’s mother. He described her as “tall and gaunt” and “her face was marked with smallpox scars”(23). And similar to the story “Hands”, her physical appearances were rather odd and not generally accepted as a norm within society. Even her husband, Tom Willard, one that was slender and graceful, “thought of the old house and the woman who lived there with him as things defeated and done for” (23). The emphasis on the word ‘thing’ –grotesque- is now evident. With a bad marriage in hand and no longer fostered by love, Elizabeth’s predicament can be easily compared to Wing Biddlebaum’s feeling of imprisonment. In the past, Elizabeth used to “walked about with the travelling men of her father’s hotel,”(31) and beneath this impression, one may think that her experiences with these men were of a lustful nature because “it was always the same, beginning with kisses and ending, after strange wild emotions, with peace and then sobbing repentance” (31). Her restlessness made her eventually chose Tom Willard as a husband and which, she ultimately regrets. Just like the scene of the grey cat being chased away by the furious baker, Elizabeth tried hard to find the pleasure in life but could never get a hold of it. Now, she could only seek refuge within her son, George and focuses on giving all her love and interest on him. However, even when she desires to fulfill her dreams within him, dreams that she has been denied of during her lifetime, she still exists primarily within her own interior life, seeking God in everything (25). While she portrays an uninterested façade, deep down she strongly opposes whoever that threatens her son. Her inability to reveal her true feelings led George to say, “I suppose I can’t make you understand, but oh, I wish I could” (33). Her struggle to communicate love or understanding with George can also be seen when Anderson highlights, “she wanted to cry out with joy because of the words that had come from the lips of her son, but the expression of joy had become impossible to her” (33).
As we look closely, we could see that both Wing Biddlebaum and Elizabeth Willard blame themselves for their grotesqueness and their inability to convey the truth to society. Both characters feel responsible and blame themselves for being who they are. Wing Biddlebaum accepts the thought of others as the truth and naturally assume that it was his truth; Elizabeth Willard accepts her own failure in life and on top of Anderson’s description of her being ‘unacceptable’, she depicts herself as being “a meaningless drab figure” (25) and “as shabby as the hotel.”(27). Moreover, the creation of mood and atmosphere by Anderson fortifies his point on the incapability of the characters to communicate with others. In “Hands”, the whole setting of a “half decayed veranda of a small frame house that stood near the edge of a ravine near the town of Winesburg, Ohio,”(9) evidently signifies how he is living on the edge of society. An imagery of the “long field that had been seeded for clover” produced only yellow mustard weeds showed that Wing Biddlebaum’s life did not turn out as lucky (like the clover) as he expected it to be, albeit he had the best of intentions as a schoolmaster (9). Whereas in “Mother”, the story starts in the same way as “Hands” does. In the beginning, the hotel is described as being “disorderly looking” with “faded wall-paper and ragged carpets,” (23) implying that there were not many visitors that stayed in it. A hotel should be a place filled with people but as described, it was “now a mere ghost of what a hotel should be,”(23). And as Elizabeth Willard’s character is further illustrated by being a “tall and ghostly figure, moving slowly through the walls,” (23), it gives the whole idea of being in an eerie house considering that the hallways were only dimly lit with kerosene lamps (27). In addition, with the help of Elizabeth’s room being located “in an obscure corner” of the house, somewhat isolated from the rest, the silence which floats in the air between herself and her son in the room concludes the characters’ inability to have successful communication. In short, Anderson aims to epitomize the struggle of expression found in his grotesques. After analyzing both stories from the cycle and catching glimpses of the characters’ interior lives, one can say that Sherwood Anderson cleverly displays the two characters’ feelings of being repressed and their struggle to share the common bond of humanity. The two stories in general included the character George Willard, which through him we could then understand how Wing Biddlebaum and Elizabeth Willard felt at the moment in time- their inability to articulate their emotions. The shortcomings of both characters are the authors of the grotesques we see in society. Furthermore, he reaffirms his belief when he gave his characters the power to control their own destiny but their ignorance led them nowhere. Both stories seem to revolve around how precarious human beings view life and the general confusion in trying to understand life’s complexity. Looking back now, this dissection of characters- Wing Biddlebaum and Elizabeth Willard has given me tremendous insight into the enigma we call the human psyche.

Winesburg, Ohio

...Despite the fact that there are people who simply do not want to communicate with others, there are those who do not think or know that there are institutions that they can reach out to for help. In the novel Winesburg, Ohio by Sherwood Anderson, each character sees the world with a different perception of what life should be like, often a distorted perception, and their neurosis is caused by the isolation of the small town. Neurosis is the term for the distress of the mind causing a person to behave socially different from others; it is also seen as abnormal nature. Neurosis includes more specifically depression, mental confusion, dependency, perfectionism, negativity and obsessive thoughts .Usually, neurosis is caused by the common attributes of modernism such as isolation, search for truth, and gender consciousness; in general, modernism is the changes and reactions of the world. Due to lack of communication to the outside world, the people of Winesburg struggle to overcome their unique difficulties by holding in grief and coping life with their own beliefs. Without communication there is no guidance, forcing the individual to form his own misleading truths; one then must cling onto his truths as means of life. However, one can choose to either confront their problems or allow himself to be helpless. A common form of neurotic behavior is caused by isolation, the separation of one from one or more people. In the short story “Adventure”, the main character Alice Hindman expressed...

Synthetic Diamonds and Nanotechnology

...Synthetic Diamonds for Nanotechnology Diamonds may serve another purpose other than being fashionable ornaments. Scientists at the Ohio University have experimented how electrons flowed through diamonds. What they found was that electrons passing through diamond performed a magnetic effect wave, similar to the wave performed at sports games. Known as spin, this effect may have the capability of transmitting data through computer circuits with the use of synthetic diamond wiring. With characteristics such as being “hard, transparent, electrically insulating, impervious to environmental contamination, resistant to acid and does not hold heat as semiconductors do”, diamonds become a great candidate for spin to occur. It was concluded that diamond remitted spin better than the metals found in computers today. Titled, “Could Diamonds be a Computer’s Best Friend?”, I found the quality of the information presented in this article to be informative and mentally captivating. The idea that synthetic diamond wiring could one day replace the wiring in computers circuits thus enabling a faster and more powerful computer can only leave the imagination to wonder what else can be used to transmit information. The article not only explained the benefits of synthetic diamond wiring but also introduces a new frontier for spin and diamonds. I would recommend this article as an informational resource for those who want information on or are interested in synthetic diamonds and computers. I...

The automotive industry saw a reduction of over 39%, Steel output was down 36.8%, and manufacturing as a sector saw a 24% decrease.[i] But what does this mean for Morgan Moe Drugstores? Why is manufacturing so important? The Midwest primary output is manufacturing and agriculture. A decline in either one of these sectors means that the workers driving the Midwest economy have less to spend; meaning that the economic circulation in the region as a whole decreases. This loss of manufacturing is seen in the falling revenues of Morgan Moe. In many ways, the company has dealt with the difficult economic climate well. It has closed underperforming stores, consolidated the workforce, and reduced overhead. However, the laying off of many employees had some consequences. Negative press, internal rumors, and malcontent are spreading through the workforce. Dan Gilbert Research Paper

... The city of Miami will be celebrating going into the weekend. The city of Cleveland will be silent, Dan Gilbert especially. LeBron James finally grasped that unreachable goal. He did what Gilbert and others said he couldn't do: become an NBA champion. The Miami Heat absolutely dominated the Oklahoma City Thunder in game 5, en route to their second championship in six years. James and the Heat fought through adversity, so they deserve to celebrate. Dan Gilbert, however, didn't fulfill his lofty promise. Two years ago,Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert wrote his infamous open letter to the City of Cleveland. He promised the city of Cleveland, a ring before LeBron would win. LeBron's Finals MVP performance silenced possibly his biggest critic. The City of Cleveland has been through a lot. Since Jim Brown retired to be an actor in 1966, they haven't been able to live up to that 1964 NFL championship (The "Super Bowl" didn't come into fruition, until the NFL/AFL merger of 1966). They watched in angst, as the Cleveland Indians squandered away their title hopes, to the then Florida Marlins in 1997. The Cavs in the early 90s, showed promise, but getting past Michael Jordan was a tough task for anyone. Then came the final straw. In 2003 a local kid from Akron, LeBron James was drafted number #1 in the NBA draft. He crashed onto the scene, like Superman in his spaceship crash landing into Smallville. Like Superman, LeBron was to do great things, he was the savior to the city...

Sports Business in National Women's Football League

...Fabiel Ortiz June 8, 2015 NWFL As the new commissioner of the National Women’s Football League or NWFL, I am considering structuring the NWFL as a single entity rather than as a traditional league such as the National Football League (NFL) or the Major League Baseball (MLB). Traditional structures are nonprofit incorporated or unincorporated associations of clubs, where each member club has separate as well as independent ownership of said club. Depending on which sport the club is in, there will be different rules concerning club ownership. There are advantages as well as disadvantages to being a traditional structure. The main advantage of a traditional structure is that it’s promise for potential profits for anyone who wants to make an investment. The main disadvantage of a traditional structure is the potential liability of the necessary agreements among the owners in that they go by “for the good of the league as a whole.” Single entity structure is different than the traditional structure. In a single entity structure, teams argue that they are a single entity because it offers a league-generated entertainment product rather than a collection of individual entities in an economic competition with one another (Sharp). There have been cases about single entity structures. One case was when a group of soccer players from the MLS sued the league. The players stated that the MLS used the single entity structure as an attempt to restrain any trades by limiting economic competition...

Lake Erie

...Water pollution is becoming a problem in the United States. Water is one of our most valuable resources. We use water for so many things daily, it is so important for us. Dirty water is one of the world’s biggest risks. Lake Erie is facing such a problem and has been since the 1960s. If this pollution is not controlled, it could be harmful to humans that live around the lake and also the animals who live there. The State of Ohio needs to enact a policy to clean up the pollution in Lake Erie and find a way to prevent pollution from happening. This hits home for me because I live in Willoughby right by Lake Erie. When I go to the beach I see how dirty the water is there. I hesitate to swim in it. Lake Erie is a beautiful lake when it is not so dirty, and we should try and preserve it. If we don’t it will be become so polluted that it will be considered dead, this happened in the 1960s due to all the factories dumping waste in to the Lake. It was literally a dumping ground and it even caught on fire a few times due to the toxic wastes. The phosphorus levels in Lake Erie are increasing due to the pollution causing harm to the fishes that reside in it. In 2014, Lake Erie had so much algae from pollution that it caused the City of Toledo to be left without fresh water. This algae was caused by the excessive amount of phosphorus in the lake. This excessive amount of Phosphorus is caused when the fertilizer is dumped into the lake by farmers. There has also been an excessive amount...

Literature of American Midwest

...Midterm: Joy Harjo English 375: Literature of the American Midwest Joy Harjo Can we separate the artist from the art? If you read something written by Hitler, could you really understand his intent without knowing what the man himself was about? An individual may read thousands of books, articles or poems during their lifetime, but how many of us really try to understand what sort of background or values influence what we are reading? There is a reason that the Literature of the American Midwest is a collection. Each story or author has something in common that in some way has connected them to writing about what we define as the American Midwest. “If the Midwest is to act as a region, it must know what it is. It must define itself. It needs a unifying portrait, a communal myth. To paint this portrait, we look to our writers, especially our novelists (Longworth, 2010, pg. 1).” Joy Harjo is an example of a writer whose work uniquely defines the Midwest through her heritage, values, accomplishments, and social and political views. Joy Harjo is a particularly interesting writer whose accomplishments and values can help you to understand a great deal about how and why her writings define her as much as she defines them. “Joy Harjo was born in 1951 in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Native American and Canadian ancestry. Strongly influenced by her Muskogee Creek heritage, feminist and social concerns, and her background in the arts, Harjo frequently incorporates Native American...
