There has been a lot of controversy surround the Winfisky Gallery here at Salem State. One piece of art has been singled out and cause strong feelings by students who attend. The piece of art that has caused such controversy in this gallery is name “State of the Union”. Within days of being shown, many people became upset. They were upset because of how close it was to the presidential election and someone being able to put something having to do with the KKK in a state university. Although this piece of art was the focus, to me there was another great piece in the Winfisky Gallery. One piece of art that stood out to me was called “Outbound” by Yetti Frenkel. The artist intent was a personal experience. He had been at the train station in Lynn and witnessed and over dose. This is extremely important because this is an epidemic that effects almost every city in the United States. While the painting it has a lot of movement. It also portrays silence. Silence of the blood draining from the man’s face, silence in the witness’s mind, in the addict’s mind, and silence in the epidemic people are scared to talk about. In the picture, you can even sense the stillness just by how the artist draws this painting. It’s like his memory took a picture and he drew exactly how he felt in that moment. In conclusion, this gallery was full of controversy. From the “State of the Union” painting to the “Outbound” painting. This gallery had many more thoughtful works of art that could be talked about. Art is supposed to be controversial and people are supposed to want to talk about it. Art should never be censored, but if it is controversial, it should be explained.
