In contemporary times, several textbooks and novels have been responsible in glorying icons in American history to the point where it may seem they posses almost zero imperfections. This course is what Sociologist James W. Loewen identifies as “Heroification”, in which the process of picking and choosing what is remembered of certain figures in American history has ultimately prevented students from learning the truth about their legacies.

Loewen argues in this process of selecting the aspects of a person’s life that we wish to remember, we make these figures seem flawless. His concern is not with who gets chosen to be included in a textbook, but simply what happens to them when they are introduced. Individuals, such as Woodrow
