The settings I studied were two grocery stores. The first store was a college campus grocery store/deli. This store was small and had few employees. The atmosphere of this store was casual and somewhat relaxed. The atmosphere was created by the employees’, their interactions with the customers, and the types of services being offered. The employees wore jeans and polo uniform shirts which is very casual and nothing like business attire or a full uniform like larger grocery store might make them wear. The interactions were the biggest part that created this casual atmosphere and the reality of this store (Lerum, 2001). The employees and customers had many similarities such as for the most part they were around the same age, they were students, …show more content…
In interactions their identities as students and employees were important in interactions, the employees may have been facing a precarious situation due to the multiple realities (Emerson, 1970). They are working in a store as employees, yet the store is on a college campus where they go to school, and they interact with other students and faculty. The interactions were also an example of cultural knowledge (Emerson, 1970). People in the store seemed to know that it was appropriate to have conversations with the employee and to ask as many questions as they …show more content…
This store was very large and clean with a lot of space between employees and customers and wide aisles. This atmosphere was also busy, but it was this way because of a lot of customers in the store moving and pushing carts. The employees and customers did not interact much unless a customer asked an employee for help or was at the register paying for things. Employees were polite, but impersonal and professional. There were few visible employees in the store, most of them were at the registers. The few who were not were busy stocking shelves or cleaning. When interacting with customers, customers approached an employee and asked for help. They had a very short discussion and the employee pointed them in a direction and the customer

When worker arrived, Mr. McDonald was mowing the neighbor’s lawn and the neighbor was sitting in his carport drinking coffee. Worker introduced herself and asked to speak with Mr. McDonald. Mr. McDonald came over from mowing the grass and worker introduced herself and asked if they could speak in privately. The home belonged to the grandparents but Mr. McDonald sister, Darleen inherited the home when they passed away. Mr. McDonald and his sister lived in the home until she moved in with a boyfriend. According to Mr. McDonald, he was unable to pay the bills when she moved because he lost his job as a security guard and has been unable to find work. The home has been without electricity or water for about 2 years. He has a generator he uses during the winter month and the neighbor lets him use her water. When asked about looking for a job he stated he was unable to renew drive license because of having cataracts and needing glasses. I have run into this issue quite a bit at work. Just a little background on where I work, I am currently employed at the Maxwell Mansion in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. It was the first mansion built in Lake Geneva by Dr. Maxwell. It is a beautiful old, Victorian mansion that was built back in 1856. The upstairs has been converted into a swanky, Victorian hotel with six rooms. The Lower level was converted in a bar and lounge area. The basement, way back in the 1920?s, was a speakeasy.
